Top stories about the deaf:

The Neenah School District in Wisconsin will be hiring

its own deaf teacher “to save money”

In Zimbabwe, the Chitungwiza Central Hospital staff is

learning sign language in order to communicate with deaf

patients

Why are Brain Anatomies different between the deaf and

the hearing? All depends on which language is first

learned. Says who?  Says Guinevere Eden, director for the Center for the Study of Learning at Georgetown

University Medical Center (GUMC). Does DeafDigest believe

it? No! But the article was written in the Journal of Neuroscience.

In the past deaf residents in the North Penn area were

out of luck if they wanted to watch public proceedings

on TV with captions. Not anymore thanks to the funding

found for this purpose.

The three finalists have been named for the superintendent of the Iowa School for the Deaf. None of them are deaf.

A SUCCESSFUL DEAF CLUB IN GREAT BRITAIN

Great Britain is the same as USA when it is

about deaf clubs. Many deaf clubs lose members

and struggle with money. These deaf people prefer

to meet at Starbucks then to help their deaf

clubs.

Anyway, one deaf club in Great Britain had

a successful event. Many deaf people came to

that club.

What was the event? Showing old time movies

of deaf people between 1930′s and 1950′s!

They watched the movies and had a great time.

FUNDING TO PAY FOR INTERPRETER FOR A DEAF REFEREE

We have many deaf referees in many sports. Many of them are

better referees than hearing referees. One big reason is that

they cannot hear abusive comments from coaches!

Anyway, a deaf woman wanted to be a referee in women’s

lacrosse but needed an interpreter.

Who paid for the interpreter? The US Lacrosse, the governing

body of lacrosse played in USA.

We do not see national organizations paying for interpreters

but that one did!

Rene Pellerin’s corner:

Since I became DeafBlind, requesting interpreter services seems like a full

time job!

I requested interpreter services for an event and was turned down because

they said it was a “personal service” (as I require a one to one

interpreter). These days I require tactile communication.

Recently I was invited to do a training.  I gave them the information they

needed to obtain interpreter services.

This agency was different.  They wanted me to hire and pay the interpreters

myself and bill the agency back later.

I tried to educate this person about their obligation to arrange for

interpreter services themselves.

This person was not convinced it was her agency’s responsibility.

The battle continues!
