### DUTIES:

**DUTIES:**

**CT Scans:** Performs computerized tomography of the head, neck spine, chest and body. These exams are performed without the use of contrast materials, The purpose of these exams is to achieve diagnostic studies to bring about proper diagnosis and treatment.

**General Exams:** Performs routine to moderately complex radiographic examination procedures. these exams are achieved by using diagnostic x-ray equipment such as fluoroscopic units, general diagnostic units and portable units.

Employees at this grade level are to be qualified to provide services in specialized areas of radiologic technology listed above and/or general radiologic technology services. The incumbent's principal responsibilities are to perform Computerized Transaxial scan procedures for the patients of this medical center.

**_Functions:_**

* Examinations include, but are not limited to, CT examinations of the chest, abdomen, pelvis, head, extremities, neck, etc. The incumbent will also assist the radiologist in performing interventional procedures under CT guidance.

* Interprets requests or instructions from radiologist or medical officers.

* Independently interprets and carries out the requests made by physicians.

* Explains procedures, positions patients for desired results, and cushions and shields patients as appropriate.

* Transfer patients from stretcher or wheelchair to radiographic table.

* Prepare room, equipment and materials needed for patient procedures.

* Properly identifies the patient and the image. Uses left and right markers. This is essential so that mistaken identity does not occur. The technician must be certain that the patient ID band and the request are identical.

* Prepares oral, rectal and injectable contrast materials and other chemical mixtures as necessary.

* Observes patients during procedures and reports complications or unusual events.

* Perform computer work and required forms associated with patient exams, credit of patient visits, complications and/or quality improvement activities of the radiology department.

* Administer contrast material, under the direction of the radiologist, according to protocols in the presence of a CT Technologist.

* Check and make minor adjustments to equipment such as setting wedges, or changing adjusters.

* Maximize patient throughput by contacts with escort, ward secretaries, nursing personnel, etc.

* Maintain a clean work area and adequate level of supplies within their assigned work areas at all times.

* Provide clinical instruction to student radiographers from affiliated programs and facilitates the attainment of established program objectives.

* Practices radiation safety in order to reduce exposure to patient, staff and self. This is achieved by the use of lead aprons, lead gloves, lead shields, lead-lined walls and collimation. The technicians to assure compliance to radiation regulations wear film badges. The incumbent must also be aware of and practice the safety policies/procedures of the medical center and participate in quality assurance activities as directed.

* Must be professional, cooperative and be able to work with other employees and staff, treating patients, employees and visitors with courtesy and respect.

* The incumbent is responsible for the quality assurance of the image (positioning/label/technique/network information) prior to transmission to the PAC’s network.**

* The incumbent assists house staff in use of PACs viewing stations and system and can also digitize films for the network and/or transmission to off site locations.**

* Provide education to patients and their families on imaging procedures.

* Maintains records and files of patient exams and performs clerical and file room duties related to patient care.

* Incumbent schedules outpatient clinic appointment using Veterans Health Information Systems and Technology Architecture (VistA) scheduling options. Uses established business rules to schedule appointments for veterans, and enters administrative notes in the Computerized Patient Records System (CPRS). This includes clinic visits, consultations and entries into the Electronic Wait List (EWL). Incumbent complies with mandatory training requirements for the outpatient scheduling process.

* Will perform 3D reconstructions as required.

* The incumbent will also participate in the departmental in-service program.

* Trains CT students in the use of CT protocols, proper patient care, radiation safety and operation of the radiology equipment

* Will learn new advancements in CT procedures and protocols

### QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

**Basic Requirements: **

**_Citizenship._******Citizen of the United States. (Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified candidates in accordance with chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3g, this part.)

**_Certification:_** All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) (R). **Advanced ARRT certification is required for Computed Tomography (CT)**. Advanced certification indicates that the technologist has demonstrated specific clinical competency in the appropriate specialty and taken and passed the designated examination. (A COPY OF CERTIFICATION IS REQUIRED)

**_Education._** Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate’s degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) **or** from schools accredited by the ARRT and certification by the ARRT in radiology. **_English Language Proficiency:_** Diagnostic Radiologic Technologists must be proficient in spoken and written english.

**Preferred Experience: _3_****_ years of _current_ general DRT experience with one or more additional years of _current_ CT experience. _**

**SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE FOR GS-08:** Completion of 1 year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade (GS-7) level directly related to the position being filled, and must fully meet the KSAs at that level. The KSAs at that level are:

1. Knowledge of the technical adequacy of the digital image, including the ability to adjust the image quality in the digital system;

2. Knowledge of different contrast material required for the requested study;

3. Knowledge of radiation protection standards, minimum radiographic exposure techniques, appropriate beam limitation to anatomical area, and employing lead shielding when performing standard or fluoroscopic procedures;

4. Knowledge of the function of computed radiography, Phosphor cassettes and CR readers; and

5. Knowledge of PACS, and basic computer skills;

**In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSA and demonstrate the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*):********

1. Ability to check system for operation and assess acceptable performance based on established guidelines;

2. Knowledge of calibration parameters and the ability to make adjustments as needed;

3. Knowledge of patient’s clinical record, diagnosis, and laboratory results;

4. Ability to monitor patient’s physiologic changes during the procedure and keep the radiologist informed;

5. Skill in using tact, diplomacy, and courtesy in dealings with the customer base, patients, staff, family, visitors, and volunteers; and

6. Knowledge of anatomy and physiology, and cross-sectional anatomy, recognizing unusual images, and determining proper positioning to best demonstrate areas of interest.

**Grade Determinations:**

(1)** Creditable Experience**

(a)** Knowledge of Current Radiologic Technology Practice.** To be creditable, experience must have demonstrated possession of the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics (also referred to as "core competencies") associated with current radiologic technology practice. This may have been evidenced by the equivalent of 1 year of active practice, which is paid or non-paid employment as a DRT as defined by ARRT.

(b)** Quality of Experience**. Experience is only creditable if it was earned after completion of the basic requirements (after ARRT Certification). Experience as a graduate DRT is creditable provided the candidate functioned as a DRT and subsequently passed the certification examination.

(c) **Part-Time Experience**. Part-time experience as a DRT is creditable according to its relationship to full-time work week. For example, a DRT would receive 1 week of full-time credit for each 2 weeks of half-time work.

**Specialized Assignment Definitions.** Specialized areas of radiologic technology include general diagnostic radiologic technology (R), bone densitometry (BD), mammography (M), diagnostic ultrasound (S), computed tomography (CT), positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MR), cardiovascular-interventional technology (CV), and qualify management (QM).

**Computed Tomography (CT).** This specialty modality requires specific knowledge of cross sectional human anatomy and its application in spiral, and/or, multi-slice computer tomography, inclusive of 3-D reconstruction scans, including drainages, biopsies, and peripheral vascular examinations. The technologist requires specific knowledge and training in the location, appearance, and function of the various major and minor systems susceptible to radiological illumination; to interpret the examination request accurately; to understand the functioning and inter-relationship of the various organs; to sue the methods and techniques which will identify organs appearing on the digital display monitor, or on film, and the various stages of the examination to judge the acceptability of the image and/or scan for diagnostic use and the emphasize the aspects of particular interest to the physician. **References: VA Handbook 5005 Part II, Appendix G25. _(REVISED June 26, 2014)_**
