This position is located at the Dayton VA Medical Center, an acute care teaching facility, providing a full range of patient care services, with state-of-the-art technology as well as education and research. The actively affiliated Dayton VA Medical Center is a 200+ bed facility, providing patient care to a veteran population of over 20,000.

The Dayton VA Medical Center (DVAMC) is located on over 200 acres of land, including a National Cemetery. The Medical Center is located in Montgomery County, OH, which has a population of more than 500,000. The DVAMC is a multi-mission, complexity level 2 medical center and is comprised of over 2000 Federal employees, over 1000 volunteers, fee basis employees, WOC employees, contract employees, work studies, STEP, SCEP, and TCF Interns. DVAMC has a strong affiliation with Wright State University Medical School. Associated with the Medical Center are geographically separated clinics including Community Based Outreach Clinics in Springfield, OH, Lima, OH, Middletown, OH, and Richmond, IN. ### DUTIES:

The primary role of the Kinesiotherapist in this position is to treat individual patients or groups of patients to relieve pain, restore or enhance performance and maximize their ability to function as independently as possible. For this position, the employee must be skilled with treating Veterans using complimentary/integrative health techniques and modalities with an emphasis on teaching yoga. The duties and responsibilities may take place throughout the medical center, including all clinical and patient care areas involved with the Service. The employee must be a registered Kinesiotherapist.

The Kinesiotherapist in this position must demonstrate a high level of understanding in the field of fitness/wellness involving age groups from young adults to geriatrics. The therapist will treat individuals or groups of veterans using techniques considered complimentary or alternative to traditional modalities including, but not limited to, yoga. The therapist must demonstrate a working knowledge in the field of yoga at the time of employment and have experience providing yoga therapy, creating yoga therapy treatment plans and educating patients on yoga therapy techniques. It is ideal that within one year of beginning employment, the individual be registered by the Yoga Alliance as a Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT).

The Kinesiotherapist in this position will also be intermittently asked to provide cardiopulmonary rehabilitation services and/or treat veterans in the Community Living Center (skilled and intermediate level nursing facility). Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

* Establishes yoga treatment plans and goals for patients. Provides individual and group yoga therapy sessions. Adapts yoga protocols to match patient ability and physical limitations.

* Independently assesses patient's functional status, identifies needs, plans and administers a treatment program with ongoing reassessment in accordance with the physician's prescription. This often requires the application of highly specialized skills and knowledge for treating a wide variety of physical and/or mental disabilities.

* Accurately test, analyzes, evaluates and records measurements of vital signs, muscular strength and endurance, joint range of motion, coordination, static and dynamic balance, cardiovascular endurance, gait analysis, posture and postural reflex reaction, gross sensory impairment, functional mobility, activities of daily living and prosthetic and orthotic gait patterns.

* Demonstrates a foundation of knowledge of disease entities including causes, course of disease, signs and symptoms, treatment, contraindications and prognoses as well as basic knowledge of medications and diagnostic tests and procedures.

* Coordinates the scheduling of patient treatment with other Rehabilitation Service therapists as well as with nursing staff if appropriate.

* Shares coverage responsibility for other Kinesiotherapy clinics when colleagues are unavailable and participates with as-needed Saturday inpatient coverage.

* Demonstrates the teaching skills required to provide education to patients, families, employees, students and co-workers.

* Documents clearly and concisely the physical findings noted during assessments and treatment as well as changes in medical status via progress notes. The therapist will be able to document appropriately to support the claimed level of care if evaluated by peer review.

* Accurately maintains encounter data and treatment documentation in keeping with Rehabilitation Services and hospital-wide policies.

### QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

**Basic Requirements:**

* **U.S. citizenship.** Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

* **Education.** A bachelor's degree in kinesiotherapy, or exercise science with an emphasis in kinesiotherapy, from an accredited college or university. This education must have included or been supplemented by clinical practice in a VA approved training program or its equivalent.

* **English Language Proficiency**. Kinesiotherapists must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 2, section D, paragraph 5a, this part.

**NOTE:** The VA approved or equivalent training program is the transitory period between and academic environment and the medical environment which enables the student to apply textbook knowledge as a professional kinesiotherapist in an actual medical treatment situation. Graduates prior to May 1, 1998, completed didactic and clinical curricula approved by the Council on Professional Standards for Kinesiotherapy (COPS-KT, Inc.). Graduates from May 1, 1998, to the present have completed a didactic and clinical curricula approved by the Committee on Accreditation of Education Programs for Kinesiotherapy (CoA-KT). As of May 1, 2001, all recognized Kinesiotherapy programs are accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).

**Preferred Experience:** Working knowledge in the field of yoga and experience providing yoga therapy, creating yoga therapy treatment plans and educating patients on yoga therapy techniques.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

**Grade Determinations:** In addition to the basic requirements, the following criteria must be used when determining the appropriate grade assignment of candidates.

**GS-7**

**Experience.**None beyond the basic requirements.

**Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities****

1. Knowledge of kinesiology, physiology, anatomy, psychology, exercise physiology, and pathological conditions.

2. Knowledge of treatment goals.

3. Knowledge of medical terminology and written documentation.

4. Ability to make recommendations regarding treatment.

**Assignment.**Individuals at this grade level serve as developmental staff KTs. They are responsible for examination, evaluation, treatment intervention, and prevention of musculoskeletal, neuromuscular, cardiopulmonary, and integumentary impairments, functional limitations, and disabilities in most patients. It is expected that they receive guidance from more experienced staff members for both routine and the more complex patients.

**GS-9**

**Experience or Education.**Completion of 1 year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level or completion of at least two full years of progressive graduate education or a masters degree in a field directly related to the position. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:

**Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities****

1. Knowledge of policies and procedures of kinesiotherapy.

2. Knowledge of assistive devices to make recommendations, including fit and function of assistive devices.

3. Skill in applying therapeutic techniques.

4. Skill in instructing patients and families in a meaningful exercise program.

5. Ability to recognize an appropriate prosthesis for the patient.

**Assignment.**Individuals at this grade level serve as staff KTs. They are responsible for examination, evaluation, treatment intervention, and prevention of musculoskeletal, neuromuscular, cardiopulmonary, and integumentary impairments, functional limitations, and disabilities in most patients. It is expected that they receive guidance from more experienced staff members for the most complex patients.

**GS-10**

**Experience.**Completion of 1 year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:

**Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities****

1. Knowledge and understanding of highly specialized complex evaluations and diagnostic tests and procedures.

2. Ability to properly assess a wide variety of patients having diverse and multiple disabilities to make recommendations for assistive devices.

3. Knowledge of teaching methods and learning principles, employing unusual motivational techniques and tact.

4. Ability to recognize an appropriate prosthesis for the patient, making adaptations and modifications without supervisory guidance or review.

5. Skill in coordinating treatment with other professionals to ensure patient compliance.

6. Ability to plan, direct, and distribute work assignments to KTs at lower grade levels.

**Assignments.**This is the full performance level for the KT. Typical assignments at this grade level include but are not limited to:

**Staff Kinesiotherapist.**Individuals in this assignment may serve as the sole KT at a medical center or an outpatient clinic. There may be more than one KT at the facility; however, individuals in this assignment serve as a member of or consultant to a multidisciplinary or specialty care team.

**Lead Kinesiotherapist.**Individuals in this assignment serve as a consultant and educator to less experienced staff members. Typical assignments include, but are not limited to, providing technical oversight necessary for accomplishing the work of the organizational unit; planning, directing, and distributing the work to lower level KTs and/or other rehabilitation assistants; providing feedback to supervisor on technical aspects of work; resolving informal employee complaints; instructing and training KTs on new equipment and/or procedures; and independently performing treatment on more complex patient issues.
