Duties

The primary functions primarily of the Automated Call Distribution (ACD) Telephone Linked Care Pharmacy Technician include providing direct and comprehensive telephone support for veteran patients with regard to prescription related logistical and availability issues and concerns in support of multiple medical facilities. Functional responsibilities also include the general enforcement of hospital-approved formulary and cost-containment actions, as well as the operational facilitation of medication therapy continuity. The position functions under the matrix supervision of the Dayton Pharmacy Call Center Operations Manager.

Duties include but are not limited to the following:

· Receive and respond to all telephone inquiries from patients/family members regarding any issue related to prescription availability.

· Respond to refill and mailed prescription status. Inquiries may include questions concerning requested/lost refills, anticipated medication arrival dates, and clarification related to medication refill frequencies, refill compliance, and eligibility.

· Communication and clarification regarding prescription window and mail processing, patient co-payment responsibilities, and patient co-management procedures.

· Complete documentation for renewal requests in Telecare Record Manager (TRM) to PCP for action.

· Advise the patient on problem resolution and screen/triage calls for problems that should be referred to other clinical health care providers for follow-up.

· Evaluate patient's refill compliance using VISTA/TRM and notify Dayton Pharmacy Call Center Operations Manager with all identified concerns.

· Administratively evaluates patient for appointments and provides information as appropriate.

· Monitor prescription documentation for the use of half-tablets, inappropriate 90-day prescription fills, and excessive monthly supply quantities.

· Readily identify potential opportunities to enhance patient care and/or operational functionality, and share recommendations with assigned supervisor.

· Participate in pharmacy-based lectures and educational programs as assigned.

· Comply with all HIPAA-related hospital patient and service confidentiality guidelines and policies.

· Communicate with all veterans in a manner that demonstrates compassion and respect.

· Communicate and follow-up on requests in a timely manner based on the needs of the clinic team/supervisor.

Work Schedule: 1st Shift, 7:30 am to 4:00 pm/10:00 am to 2:00 pm, Monday - Friday.

Qualifications

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

· U.S. citizenship. Non- citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

· Education or Experience. A high school diploma or equivalent; or at least 3 months experience.

· Certification. Certification by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is required at grades GS-6 and above.

· English Language. Pharmacy technicians appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English.

Preferred Experience:

1. At least 2 years Pharmacy experience

2. Knowledge of the computerized prescription process demonstrated by the ability to input prescriptions and medication orders

3. Knowledge of Pharmacy documentation, policies, procedures, and nomenclature.

4. Skilled in establishing and maintaining effective relationships in frequently stressful situations with individuals from a variety of social-economic backgrounds.

5. Skilled in computer based record systems, and basic word processing/typing, while interacting with caller via telephone.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Grade Determinations: GS-6

Experience. One year experience at the GS-5 grade level, and must fully meet the KSAs at the next lower level.

Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

1. Ability to solve problems and make recommendations, e.g., troubleshoot operational problems and refer for appropriate action.

2. Knowledge of the operation and care of automated equipment.

3. Knowledge of, and ability to follow, written instructions, for compounding with aseptic technique for hazardous materials such as oncology agents.

4. Knowledge, and ability to perform, compounding with aseptic technique for routine sterile products.

5. Knowledge of policies and procedures for inventory management in specialized areas such as emergency carts.

6. Knowledge of the computerized prescription process demonstrated by the ability to input prescriptions and medication orders.

Assignments. Pharmacy technicians may be assigned to any area of the pharmacy including expanded distributive function assignments; for example assignment as team leaders for specific process improvement teams involving technical areas or performing more highly complex duties including preparation of oncology agents for clinical pharmacy specialists. For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity (difficulty), and range of variety, and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time.
