Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist - Interventional/Angiography

Duties:
The Interventional Technologist operates various types of imaging equipment in the Interventional Radiology Section, to include CT and Ultrasound; the equipment, both fixed and mobile units including direct capture digital and cassette acquired digital units as part of the Interventional Radiology (IR) imaging plan for patients.  The Interventional Technologist has the overall responsibility for the coordination and performance of the Interventional/angiography area.  He/she works closely with the radiologists, clinicians, nurses and clerical staff to assure optimum quality control, efficient coordination of activities, high quality diagnostic/therapeutic exam results, and patient satisfaction.  The Technologist will operate various imaging and ancillary equipment to include but limited to Siemens Angie Axium Artis System, GE 4100 Angio system, Phillips Brilliance 16 bid bore CT scanner for biopsies, SonoSite MicroMaxx & Sonosite M-Turbo ultrasound units, NeuroTherm RF Ablation unit, Rita, Covindian, Cool RFA Cro-ablation Equipment, Vertebroplasty Device, Arrow Trerotola Thrombectomy Device, Edward Life Sciences Embolectomy Catheter, Medrad Mark V Provis Power Injector & Ceiling mounted patient lift systems as well as Portable X-ray Units.  Additional responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

* Interprets requests or instructions from radiologist or medical officers;
* Independently interprets and carries out the requests made by physicians;
* Prepare room, equipment and material needed for patient procedures;
* Explains procedures, positions patients for desired results, and cushions and shields patients as appropriate;
* Prepares contrast materials under the direction of the radiologist for the purpose of performing exams requiring injectable solutions for the purpose of performing a variety of studies to include but not limited to Vascular studies, Arthrography Neuroangiography, Myelography and Vertebroplasty.  In the case of injected media, a patient consent form must be obtained when required.  These procedures require the use of needles, syringes, and various types and concentrations of IV contrast.  Follow prescribed protocols required to perform procedures;
* Transfer patients from stretcher or wheelchair to radiographic table or procedure cart utilizing safe patient handling techniques and devices;
* Incumbent schedules outpatient clinic appointment using Veterans Health Information Systems and Technology Architecture (Vista) scheduling options.  Uses established business rules to schedule appointments for veterans, and enters administrative notes in the Computerized Patient Records System (CPRS).  This includes clinic visits, consultations and entries into the Electronic Wait List (EWL).  Incumbent complies with mandatory training requirements for the outpatient scheduling process;
* Participates in on-call to provide 24 hours, 7 days a week coverage if required;
* Perform computer work and required forms associated with patient exams, credit of patient visits, complications and/or quality improvement activities of the Radiology Section;
* Maintain and clean work area and adequate level of supplies within assigned work areas at all times;
* Assist house staff in use of PACs viewing stations and system and digitize films for the network and/or transmission of off-site locations;
* Maintain cassettes/plates/workstations (i.e., primary/secondary plate eras, cleanliness of Quality Assurance stations, etc.) as directed by the manufacturer;
* Perform image reconstructions on advanced workstations as directed by the radiologist or as part of a given study.
* Assists the Interventional Radiologist in the performance of neuroangiography including spine, head and neck studies, myelography of the complete spine, cervical, thoracic and lumbar epiduragraphy, vertebroplasty, lumbar puncture and neurostimulation trials utilizing high sophisticated x-ray equipment such as computerized fluoroscopy, pressure injectors and digital imaging with the patient on physiologic monitors.

This position is located in Therapeutic & Diagnostic Imaging Service (TDI) at the Dayton VA Medical Center and is directly supervised by the Chief Technologist. Incumbent performs technical work in support of interventional radiology, under the direction of a physician.

* Qualifications & Evaluations

Basic Requirements: Citizenship.Citizen of the United States. (Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified candidates in accordance with chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3g, this part.)

Certification: All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) (R).

Education.Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate's degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT)orfrom schools accredited by the ARRT and certification by the ARRT in radiology. English Language Proficiency:Diagnostic Radiologic Technologists must be proficient in spoken and written English.

Preferred Experience:  Advanced Level DRT

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE FOR GS-09: Completion of 1 year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade (GS-8) level directly related to the position being filled, and must fully meet the KSAs at that level. The KSAs at the GS-8 level are:

1. Ability to check, system for operation and assess acceptable performance based on established guidelines;

2. Knowledge of calibration parameters and the ability to make adjustments as needed;

3. Knowledge of patient's clinical record, diagnosis, and laboratory results;

4. Ability to monitor patient's physiologic changes during the procedure and keep the radiologist informed;

5. Skill in using tact, diplomacy, and courtesy in dealing with the customer base, patients, staff, family, visitors, and volunteers; and

6.  Knowledge of anatomy and physiology, and cross-sectional anatomy, recognizing unusual images, and determining proper positioning to best demonstrate areas of interest.

In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSA and demonstrate the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*):
1. Ability to balance the  needs of patients and staff while still performing complex scans and procedures;

2. Skill to demonstrate appropriate techniques to gather relevant information from the medical record, significant others, and health care providers;

3. Ability to assess factors that may contraindicate the procedure;

4. Knowledge of basic first aid and basic life support practices related to radiography;

5. Knowledge of physical assessment, aseptic techniques, intravenous methods and techniques and universal precautions; and

6. Knowledge of pre-procedural, procedural, and post-procedural care of patients.

Grade Determinations:

(1)Creditable Experience

(b)Quality of Experience. Experience is only creditable if it was earned after completion of the basic requirements (after ARRT Certification). Experience as a graduate DRT is creditable provided the candidate functioned as a DRT and subsequently passed the certification examination.

(c)Part-Time Experience. Part-time experience as a DRT is creditable according to its relationship to full-time work week. For example, a DRT would receive 1 week of full-time credit for each 2 weeks of half-time work.

Specialized Assignments. Specialized areas of radiologic technology include general diagnostic radiologic technology (R), bone densitometry (BD), mammography (M), diagnostic ultrasound (S), computed tomography (CT), positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MR), cardiovascular-interventional technology (CV), and quality management (QM).

General Radiologic Technology (R).  DRTs perform procedures and examinations in hospitals or clinics under the direction of radiologists and other medical officers.  The objective of the examinations and procedures is to produce radiographic studies that are used in medical diagnosis and interpreted by medical officers to locate injuries, foreign bodies, pathological conditions, or lesions within the body.  They prepare and administer contract media and medications in accordance with State and Federal regulations.  All DRTs must be knowledgeable in Computerized Radiography (CR) and Picture Archiving and Communications Systems (PACS).

Assignments.For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity (difficulty), and range of variety, and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time.  DRTs at the GS-9 grade level may be appointed to the Advanced DRT with varying assignments including special and complex radiographic procedures, the Diagnostic Radiologic Team Leader or Supervisor Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist.
