The women's basketball team improved to 5-0 over the last week. Tuesday's 94-57 victory over Savannah State was Georgia's highest point total since 2007 and Head Coach Andy Landers's 800th win at the Lady Bulldogs helm. Throw in his 82 wins heading up Roane State's program back in the '70s, and he's only 18 shy of 900 career victories as a head coach. Thank you, Coach Landers, for sharing your impressive talents with scores of fine young women who've donned the Red and Black for more than 30 years and with all of us in Bulldog Nation. On their way to Landers's 800th win, the Lady Bulldogs defeated South Carolina State 62-46 Friday and embarrassed Belmont 70-38 Sunday afternoon. The women leave the comforts of Stegeman Coliseum to take part in New Mexico's Thanksgiving Tournament, facing Saint Bonaventure tomorrow and New Mexico or North Texas on Saturday. They return to Athens on 28 November against Furman before the big home showdown against Georgia Tech on 2 December.
Following a rough patch, the volleyball team swept Mississippi State, 3-0 (25-18, 28-26, 25-20), last night. It was a much-needed win after losses to Arkansas 3-1 (18-25, 25-19, 16-25, 16-25) in Fayetteville, and to Kentucky 3-1 (19-25, 25-18, 14-25, 17-25) in Lexington extended a conference losing streak to seven. Tomorrow night, UGA, 14-15 (8-11), closes out the regular season at home against No. 15 Florida, 24-4 (18-1), who has the Eastern Division championship wrapped up.
Coming off their sweep of Mizzou, the men's and women's swimming and diving teams hosted Emory and bested the Eagles by scores of 114-83 for the tenth-ranked men (3-1) and 111-86 for the second-ranked women (5-0). The women's victory represented their 81st consecutive home win.
In Brookings, South Dakota, the No. 3 equestrian team had a split weekend, barely losing to host South Dakota State after an 8-8 tie was decided by the raw scores of 1,201-1,198. The riders rebounded with a win over No. 9 New Mexico State, 12-4. Next up is a visit to Fresno, California. The cross country teams finished up the season at the NCAA Championships in Louisville, Kentucky. The men made program history with their 19th-place finish, the highest ever recorded by a UGA team. The women placed 30th.
As fall sports are winding down, we begin to look ahead to the winter and spring. The 2013 softball schedule was announced.
