“If there’s one message to channel into makeup from all the early 70s references governing the fashions for spring, it’s freedom. Freedom to be yourself, freedom to have fun with it, and freedom to look to the future.” So says MAC Cosmetics in its spring beauty report.

The most colourful trend of the season takes its inspiration from music festivals dotting the globe. From Burning Man and Glastonbury to free parties and raves, there is a beauty born of self-expression and creativity. “Think folksy, field-style translated to urban street-style and ‘girls at gigs’,” says Lucia Pica, the new Creative Director for Makeup at Chanel. Pulling out New Age colours that have a seaside story to their palette, makeup artists carefully placed pops of sherbet pastels, sea-foam greens, shell pinks and aquatic blues.

“The message here is mix, don’t match,” says MAC Cosmetics Senior Artist Jane McKay. “Use one colour for the top lip and another for the bottom. Or pair two pastel shades like those used in the Delpozo show. The only rule is to ease up on the foundation. “Anything involving colour only looks modern when you take away the skin coverage,” says Pro Artist Terry Barber.

Star show: Delpozo

City: New York City

Lead makeup artist: Monica Marmo

The look: pastel green and ice cream pink shadow on the eye.

Complexion: radiant skin with a hint of pink blush buffed into the cheeks for a pinky flush

Custom blend: the MAC artists used MAC Pro Landscape Green and Pure White Paint Sticks mixed together and stippled over the eyelid up to the crease and dusted with Prep + Prime Transparent Finishing Powder to set. They then took a MAC Pro Process Magenta Paint Stick and Pure White Paint Sticks mixed together and applied as a thin line through the upper lash line, layered with Prep + Prime Transparent Finishing Powder to set. Pearl Cream Colour Base was applied through the inner tear duct to open and highlight the eyes.
