Storage Strategy

Dell EMC unveiled product and service enhancements to deliver software-defined, cloud-enabled data protection for the modern data centre. As customers look to transform IT, the early step is to modernise their data centre. With a modern architecture, adopting technologies that are software-defined and cloud-enabled is primary. Today, Dell EMC is making its market-leading data protection portfolio cloud-enabled as well as allowing its market-leading Purpose Built Backup Appliance software-defined to run on Dell EMC PowerEdge.

According to Beth Phalen, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Data Protection Solutions, Dell EMC, “Dell EMC offers a world-class portfolio of data protection solutions designed to help ensure our customers can trust their data is protected to meet any service level across all consumption models. We provide our customers protection where they need it and how they want it – from traditional on-premise to virtualised infrastructure, to converged infrastructure, to cloud, Dell EMC solutions cover the continuum of requirements and ensure data protection everywhere.”

Data Domain Virtual Edition 3.0

Dell EMC released Data Domain Virtual Edition 3.0 (DD VE) to give customers the useful purpose-built backup appliance in an economical software-defined solution wherever it’s required. DD VE operates as a virtual machine and is now qualified to run on Dell EMC PowerEdge servers. Dell EMC also introduces pre-validated, fully supported, pre-tested reference architectures that integrate the strengths of PowerEdge 13G servers with DD VE software. As announced last month, DD VE is also supported on Dell EMC VxRail appliances, enabling customers to utilise software-defined protection storage in a hyperconverged environment.

DD VE 3.0 features 6 times increase in scalability, able to protect up to 96TB in a single instance. Dell EMC has developed hypervisor support in DD VE, allowing it to run as a virtual machine on both VMware vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V. Customers can also maximise on cloud tiering capabilities in DD VE for long-term data retention in public, private or hybrid clouds such as Dell EMC Elastic Cloud Storage and Virtustream Storage Cloud. Secure multi-tenancy in DD VE is optimal for Backup-as-a-Service deployments in a private cloud or service provider cloud.

Enhancing Cloud Data Protection and Manageability

Enterprises now have applications and data both on-premise and in the cloud, causing complexity for IT staff trying to manage and protect highly distributed applications and data. Dell EMC’s data protection portfolio is created to help IT centralise data protection management and control of the entire information environment. It also is now extensible to more cloud platforms, offering the similar enterprise-grade protection experience.

Dell EMC is announcing two new protection solutions for in-cloud applications and data as well as the addition of multiple cloud-enabled enhancements created to simplify and cut the protection cost for both backup and application administrators, including:

Protection of applications running on Microsoft Azure: NetWorker with CloudBoost now secures applications running on the Microsoft Azure platform, employing the same source-side data de-duplication, compression and encryption for highly efficient and secure backups in the cloud.

Native cloud tiering in NetWorker 9.1 and Avamar 7.4: Native administration of Data Domain Cloud Tier via the NetWorker or Avamar management consoles enables you to create, monitor and manage long-term data retention and data migration policies using Data Domain Cloud Tier from the similar user interface being used for on-premises data retention workflows.

Native cloud tiering for applications: With Data Domain Boost for Enterprise Applications, IT application administrators are now reinforced to set up their own backup to the cloud for long-term retention, while using their own application’s native interface or CLI commands. Supported applications involve Oracle, SQL, SAP, SAP HANA, IBM DB2.

Natively tier de-duplicated data directly to cloud platforms: Data Domain Cloud Tier does not require cloud gateway or virtual appliance to tier de-duplicated data directly to the public, private or hybrid cloud. To further reduce TCO, the solution guarantees that only unique data is uploaded to already de-duplicated data within cloud object storage.

Secure data tiering to a variety of cloud platforms: Data Domain Cloud Tier supports data tiering to clouds including Virtustream Storage Cloud, Dell EMC ECS for on-premise object storage as well as third party public clouds and adopts DD Encryption and DD Retention Lock to ensure data in the cloud remains secure.

Spanning Backup – Global Expansion: Microsoft Office 365 and SalesForce.com have become primary cloud-based business applications for office workers across the world. Spanning Backup for Office 365 simplifies compliance with European Union data sovereignty regulations, providing EU customers a backup and recovery solution for their cloud-based Office 365 and SalesForce data. All European customer data storage and processing is managed within a new regional data centre situated in the EU.

Prosupport One for Data Centre

Dell EMC is releasing ProSupport One for Data Center with a focus on providing consistent, seamless support. This service brings together Dell and EMC’s support capabilities for enterprise customers seeking for a high-quality, unified service experience across their IT environment.

Data Domain Virtual Edition 3.0 and NetWorker 9.1 support for Microsoft Azure are available now. NetWorker 9.1 with CloudBoost, Native management of Data Domain Cloud Tier support with NetWorker 9.1, Avamar 7.4 and Data Domain Boost for Enterprise Applications 3.5 will be available in December 2016. Spanning Backup for Office 365 service and ProSupport One for Data Centre are available now.
