Multi-Emmy award winner, Oscar nominee and iconic comedy legend Mary Tyler Moore has passed away at the age of 80. Moore died of complications from Type I Diabetes, which she was diagnosed with when she was 33 years old.
Born in New York City in 1936 and studying to be a dancer, she ended up doing numerous TV gigs including “Richard Diamond, Private Detective” where only her voice and legs were ever seen.
Her break came with “The Dick Van Dyke Show” in 1961 in which she played the wife of Van Dyke’s Rob Petrie. Proving every bit as funny as her male co-stars, she went on to star in “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” a legendary sitcom which cemented her iconic statues, set a new standard for feminism, and launched James L. Brooks’ career.
When it wrapped, she went on to numerous guest appearances on TV and roles in films, most notably Robert Redford’s 1980 Best Picture winner “Ordinary People” and later David O. Russell’s “Flirting With Disaster”.
