The year is off to a good start for Amagansett resident Sarah Jessica Parker. Tonight, Parker will receive a Guild Hall Lifetime Achievement Award for the Performing Arts at the 31st Annual Academy of the Arts Ceremony at the Rainbow Room in Manhattan. She’ll be joining past recipients, including her husband Matthew Broderick, Laurie Anderson and Dick Cavett.
The Academy is dedicated to honoring artists in the performing, visual or literary arts from the East End for demonstrating a lifetime of excellence in their specific field.
The award is no embellishment—Parker has been performing in film and on stage since the age of 11, starring in The Innocents under the direction of playwright Harold Pinter in 1976 and, more recently, becoming a household name starring in the HBO comedy Sex and the City as Carrie Bradshaw. Her relationship with HBO continues with the upcoming debut of her new series Divorce.
Parker acts as executive producer and star of the new series, playing Frances, a woman amidst a “very, very long divorce,” claims Variety, realizing that starting anew proves to be more difficult than she initially thought. She stars alongside Thomas Haden Church, Molly Shannon, Talia Balsam and Tracey Letts. No date has been provided for its premiere, but it’s slated to arrive “sometime in spring or summer 2016.”
Parker will also be the guest speaker at Harvard Law School’s Class Day Ceremonies on May 25, addressing the graduating class not as a renowned actor, but for her contributions as a public servant and philanthropist. In the past, Parker has been selected by President Barack Obama as a member of the Presidential Committee, collaborated with Mayor Michael Bloomberg to benefit public schools in New York City and has contributed to amfAR in support of AIDS research.
With her award tonight, it’s apparent that she is being recognized for more than just her lifelong presence on the screen.
