AIA Peconic announced the winners of the 2015 Daniel J. Rowen Design Awards Program at the Southampton Art Center on Saturday, November 7.
Awards were announced by AIA Peconic President Luis Peris, AIA to an audience of approximately 50 guests and supporters of local architectural firms. In addition, the event featured an exhibition of artwork by local architects, as well as various boards presenting East End firms with images of their best projects, descriptions of each firm and more. Work on display included two architectural models by Gary Lawrance, AIA, of Lawrance Architectural Presentations, paintings by John Whelan, AIA, of John Whelan Associates Ltd., and pen and ink works by Ric Stott, LEED AP, AIA, of Stott Architecture in Southampton.
The 2015 jurors found the initial 27 projects a rewarding challenge, AIA Peconic explained in an announcement. Cathleen McGuigan, Editor-in-Chief at Architectural Record magazine, Heidi Blau, FAIA LEED AP, a partner at FXFOWLE Architects, and Maitland Jones, AIA LEED AP, partner at Deborah Berke Partners, reviewed projects and presented awards that recognized unbuilt architecture, planning, urban design and research. Submissions could be real or conceptual, but all were required to reflect a solution related to the build environment.
Honor Awards are given to firms whose projects display “clear excellence in architectural design from concept through completion." Stott Architecture PC received the Honor Award for their work on the beautiful Suffolk Theater renovation in Riverhead; Maziar Behrooz Architecture earned the Honor Award for “A Small House in Montauk,” and Bates Masi Architects brought home an Honor Award for their Promised Land project.

Four firms won Merit Awards for projects displaying “exemplary execution of design principals and presentation.” Among them, Berg Design Architecture received the Merit Award for their Kinfolk project; DiSunno Architecture PC earned a Merit Award for their work on the Carriage House project; Bates Masi Architects won the Merit Award for their Amagansett Dunes project, and Will Sharp Architects won a Merit Award for their Rattlesnake Creek Residence.
Additionally, AIA Peconic bestowed Juror’s Awards upon three firms in recognition of “excellence in resolution of specific areas of focus through interpretation of style, eloquent detailing, remarkable use of materials, clear sustainability, well defined historic/vernacular influences, or any unique/memorable characteristic that stands out in the project.” Martin Architects, PC, AIA earned a Juror’s Award for their Daniel’s Lane project; Maziar Behrooz Architecture won a Juror’s Award for the Baha'I Temple, and Blaze Makoid Architecture received the Juror’s Award for their Martis Camp 506 project.
