Every year, somebody tries to find a way to outdo the Super Bowl. Whether it’s the Puppy Bowl (which adds fantasy teams this year) or the Kitten Bowl (hosted by Beth Ostroksy Stern) or some other event, the line of contenders only seems to grow. Here in the Hamptons, we love the big game and a little healthy gamesmanship as much as anybody else, so as you sit there counting hot wings or moments until kickoff, we count down the top 10 reasons why, when the Hamptons takes on the Super Bowl, there’s really no competition.

•Super Bowl XLVIII has Richard Sherman, Doug Baldwin and Terrance “Pot Roast” Knighton. The Hamptons has Cindy Sherman, Alec Baldwin and Bobby Van’s steaks.

•With all due respect to Denver, you would never see a bronco at the Hampton Classic.

•There are sports books taking prop bets on whether Bruno Mars will be wearing a hat during his Super Bowl XLVIII halftime performance, due to the weather. There’s never a question about Dan Rattiner’s hat, no matter what the weather is.

•The Super Bowl doesn’t have Scarlett Johansson (sorry, Coke and Pepsi). Amagansett does (sorry, Southampton and Brideghampton).

•Quick, name a football player named Hampton who played in the Super Bowl. Okay, how about any NFL player named Hampton (see below for some help). Okay, now name your favorite Hampton spot to watch the Super Bowl. Shall we continue?

•We already had Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith rocking the East End at Bay Street Theatre a few weeks ago. The Super Bowl has his band for an encore.

•We knew the awesome nature of sea hawks—we call them osprey—way before Seattle’s version made it to play for the Lombardi Trophy.

•Super Bowl festivities in New York and New Jersey got wines from Wölffer Estate Vineyard and Bedell Cellars, plus other local fare, for a few nights during the week of parties. We get them all year long.

•Football’s biggest game has been going on for 48 years, while the Hamptons’ Artists & Writers Softball Game just celebrated 65 years. Now that’s a Big Game. Plus, has Bill Clinton ever officiated the Super Bowl?

•Eli Manning stopped in at T-Bar at Savanna’s in Southampton before embarking on his second Super Bowl winning season. Super Bowl XLVIII quarterback and brother Peyton Manning has never been out here…and he has only one Super Bowl. Hmmm…
