I’m one of those people. You know, the ones that have to decline a lot of dairy-based recipes, particularly desserts and I can’t enjoy an ice cold glass of milk with a giant, chewy chocolate chip cookie. In fact, we took our youngest out to his restaurant of choice on Friday to celebrate the end of the school year (each kid picks their restaurant) and I had to quietly say “the lactose-free ice cream, please.” When I’m able to buy a milk product that I can eat? Score! If a person with lactose intolerance drinks regular milk, they could end up in a lot of pain later. There are a lot of jokes about lactose-intolerant people, but the reality is that they often end up with incredible stomach pain. Even a few bites of forbidden food — cheese, milk, yogurt, etc. — may mean they are miserable within a few hours, hunched over, holding onto their stomach. It’s not just the joking type of problem, it’s a real pain issue. That’s why we – they – look for options that allow us to eat ‘normally’ without anyone knowing, and the new a2 Milk® allows for that. ( I found myself whispering “lactose-free” at the ice cream restaurant — how embarrassing is that? So unnecessary!) Interestingly enough, an independent study showed 1 in 4 Americans have discomfort after drinking milk; yet only 5-7% of the population has been clinically diagnosed with a lactose intolerance medical condition.

a2 Milk® is actually pure farm fresh milk. I had The Husband taste it, for the first time, and he couldn’t tell a difference between a2 Milk® and the regular milk he purchases weekly at Costco. The difference is mainly for me. a2 Milk® means I can enjoy milk without any tummy troubles or other symptoms. The A1 protein is the culprit behind ‘Post-Dairy Digestive Discomfort,’ while a2 Milk® comes from specially selected cows, the way mother nature intended. It’s the pure replacement to chemically processed alternatives. I don’t have to compromise with taste and nutrition by choosing soy-based or other odd beverages or cut out milk altogether! a2 Milk® has partnered with U.S. family dairy farmers in upstate New York and the Midwest to expand the heirloom a2 herd, which produced milk naturally free from the A1 protein. It’s affordable and because the taste is so indistinguishable from the other milk in the fridge, the rest of the family can drink it, too, so I don’t have to buy a lot of milk products to satisfy everyone.

I bought my a2 Milk® locally at Sprout’s in Rancho Cucamonga. I love Sprout’s, because they sell milk that’s safe for lactose-intolerant people (like me!),  it’s local and they sell all sorts of healthier options for typical, daily food purchase (including sushi) and I can buy non-GMO chicken while grabbing my beverage options and organic greens.

Whether you’re lactose-intolerant or not, take a peek at a2 Milk® and see what you think! It tastes so similar to “real” milk that I don’t think I could have told the difference. Now I won’t be up at 2am in pain AND I get to enjoy cereal, oatmeal, homemade ice cream and anything else that includes “real” milk.

For further information, here are a few places you can visit. Find a2 Milk® via their store locator, or on Facebook, or follow them on Twitter. If you try it or have questions, hashtag #a2milk and be included in the a2 Milk® feed!
