Welcome to “Stuff You Should Know About” – a monthly collection of travel news, tips, photos, and other odds and ends that don’t really fit in anywhere else but that I still really want to share with you.

Random travel news

JetBlue to offer free wifi

When it comes to air travel, we’ve become accustomed to paying extra for everything. But JetBlue says it’s going to go against the norm. The airline announced recently that they plan to be the first US carrier to offer free wifi on ALL planes in its fleet. That is AWESOME.

Glass bridges are the hot new trend

Glass-bottomed bridges and walkways have suddenly become super hot, especially in places like China. But one of those brand new bridges cracked recently while tourists were on it. Yikes! Would you walk out on one after reading a story like this?

Cool travel app/website of the month

Usually in this section I tell you about a new travel app or site to help you plan/organize your travels, or to make things easier when you’re on the road. This month, though, I want to give a shout out to Travel Blog Success, one of the best membership sites out there for anyone interested in learning the ins and outs of travel blogging.

Why am I mentioning them this month? Well because over the last few months, I’ve been working with TBS to develop a brand new course all about working with travel brands and tourism boards.

The course will launch in mid-November, and I just want to give a heads up to anyone who might be interested in learning more about writing pitches, creating media kits, and building successful partnerships with companies and DMOs. Stay tuned for more details!

Top Instagram shots from September/October

I’ve made Instagram a big focus of mine in 2015 — if you aren’t following already, follow me on Instagram @dangerousbiz!

Here are some of my most-liked photos from the last month or so:

Another shot for you from White Sands National Monument – the largest gypsum dune field in the world. It’s in the middle of nowhere in southern New Mexico, but it’s SO worth visiting. Even at sunset, the sand dunes never felt crowded, allowing for shots like this. A photo posted by Amanda (@dangerousbiz) on

The amazing Peyto Lake in Banff National Park in Alberta. And yes, that IS the actual color of the water! Peyto is one of the many glacial-fed lakes in Banff, and in the summer lots of glacial rock flour (basically rock pulverized by a glacier) flows into the lake and hangs suspended in the water, giving the lake its turquoise color. Definitely a must-see! A photo posted by Amanda (@dangerousbiz) on

This is what it looks like when hundreds of hot air balloons ascend into the skies at the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. WOW! ???????? A photo posted by Amanda (@dangerousbiz) on

My latest post on the blog is about some of the most stunning landscapes in Alberta, Canada – including this one: Moraine Lake in Banff National Park. Check out the post! (Link in profile)

You should pack this

Each month, I’ll feature one or two of my packing must-haves. This month, Im recommending:

Pacsafe Camsafe V25

The longer I’ve been in this blogging game, the more interested I’ve become in photography. Photos help enhance every travel story I tell (and, in fact, sometimes tell the story even better than words), so it’s no surprise that as the years have worn on I’ve started spending more money on photography gear.

I recently bought a brand new camera and fancy lens, and decided I should probably buy a proper camera bag to go along with it. After reading tons of reviews and clicking through Amazon like crazy, I finally settled on the Pacsafe Camsafe.

I’ve loved Pacsafe’s bags for years because they’re stylish AND functional. I went with this camera backpack because it has a dedicated divided compartment for your camera and lenses (and, in my case, also all my GoPro gear), as well as a laptop sleeve and a top compartment large enough to fit my purse and headphones on travel days.

Pacsafe is known for its pickpocket-proof gear – this bag, for example, has mesh-reinforced fabric and zipper clasps to making sneaking into the bag difficult. A great buy for anyone traveling with a decent amount of photo gear.

>> Buy it on Amazon!

What I’m reading right now

Lastly, I love to read and am making a goal of reading MORE in 2015. Here’s what I’m currently reading:

Conquering Mountains: How to Solo Travel the World Fearlessly

Fellow solo female traveler/blogger Kristin Addis from Be My Travel Muse recently published a really great guide to solo female travel. I know lots of you who follow my site are interested in solo travel, so this book might be perfect for you!

The inspirational and informative book tackles all sorts of issues surrounding traveling alone, from how to overcome to fear to saving up money to planning/packing to how to stay safe on the road. Check out this solo female travel guide!
