Super excited to be sharing this with you today!

This is a great round up of easy build Christmas projects!

Collaborating with 17 other bloggers to give you some cool DIY projects for the holidays!

I have to be honest. My intention in this project was to create a lighted marquee sign. But, because projects don’t always go as planned I had to switch gears and come up with another idea. A wood slice sign that is interchangeable from table to wall.

On weekends this fall our family went on a few nature walks. During one of the walks, we found a pretty good sized birch branch that was solid inside. The branches we find typically have decayed so this was a nice find. Why pay $20 in a craft store for something you can find on a walk?

Because I like to craft projects with memories and meaning behind them, I thought of the word joy for the wood sign. The word joy was perfect in describing the girls time on their walk.

MATERIALS NEEDED:

birch branch cut into slices

repurposed piece of wood, scrap piece off furniture

glass glitter

decorative paper, Paper Mojo

decoupage

scrap pieces of wood for frame

chalk paint, Annie Sloan Old White

I started with this piece of wood I had in the garage. It was off of a small desk that I had taken apart and repurposed.

The piece needed a good sanding and it is always a good idea to prep your surface well before painting. I have had this Ryobi sander for years and it has served me well.

I used the back of the piece to trace a rectangle for my decorative paper that would be decoupaged on the front. I cut this out and used for my template.

The wood grain decorative paper I chose has so much texture; not just in the pattern but in the fibers of the paper. It is gorgeous.

The paper was very easy to tear apart because it was made of fibers. I took a small paint brush, dipped it in water and applied to the fold line. Then, the paper was easily applied to the face of the wood with decoupage medium.

On the back of the wood piece, we attached some simple framing. This would hold the removable tray in place. The tray will give the sign stability to stand for mantel use.

Apply the glass glitter to each piece of birch with the decoupage medium. Attach the wood pieces to form the word JOY on the board.

I think it turned out super unique! A bit of rustic and glam!

I think the decorative paper just makes the piece! Paper Mojo has some of the prettiest papers I have ever seen. I have ordered several decorative papers from them in the past and they will not disappoint! I hope you enjoyed the tutorial on this DIY wood sign.
