Major Causes of Wrong Way Wrecks

Hundreds of wrong way crashes occur in the U.S. each year. In a majority of cases where drivers becomes involved in a wrong way accident distracted driving, or driving under the influence played a role. Says Texas based car accident attorney Amy Witherite of the Dallas based personal injury law firm of Eberstein Witherite LLP, “sadly, a high percentage of wrong way crashes result in fatalities of occupants of other vehicles. Statistics show that in a majority of instances where someone is driving the wrong way they wind up hitting another vehicle, sign post, or other object.” According to data from the National Transportation Safety Board, although wrong-way collisions make up less than five percent of traffic accidents on divided highways, they have a significantly higher chance of resulting in serious injuries and fatalities than other accident types. Because in some areas these types of crashes appear to be on the rise, several states are testing strategies to help reduce instances of wrong-way driving.

What to Do After a Wrong-Way Crash

Victims of wrong-way crashes can have their lives turned upside down after enduring such a traumatic event. The experience can leave victims with a significant undue financial burden that compounds their physical and emotional pain and suffering. According to Witherite “those who have been hurt by a driver’s negligence on the road have options for legal recovery of any financial damages they have incurred as a result.” Driving on the wrong side of the road is one type of driver negligence that victims can seek recovery for. By speaking with an experienced personal injury attorney, survivors of wrong-way crashes, or the loved ones of victims killed in these accidents can get an assessment of their legal options in relation to their specific case.

An investigation into the circumstances of the recent car crash in Greenville continues.
