Day 2 at World MasterCard Fashion Week showed us the spring 2014 collections from some designers we’ve seen in the tents for years as well as quite a few new faces.

It was an action packed day of shows starting at 3pm with shows every hour until wrapping up at 9pm. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to catch the Tatsuaki, Laura Siegel, Travis Taddeo or JBNY shows earlier in the day because I had to work, but I made it to the tents in time to see the Mercedes Benz Start Up show which I look forward to each year!

Even though I wasn’t able to catch the Laura Siegel show, I looked at the photos and simply had to share this show with you – FINALLY some colour on the spring runways! I love the tie dyed pieces in bold blues and greens, the tribal print midi dresses with bold jewellery and the harem pants with tanks and scarves. This collection is effortlessly cool and featured my favourite beauty of the week so far – sideswept waves with blue lined eyes – stunning!

When I arrived at the tents around 6:30pm the anticipation was building to find out who would win the coveted Mercedes Benz Start Up competition. Each year this show presents collections from emerging designers from across Canada and it’s true peek at what’s to come on the Canadian fashion scene. Last night, we saw spring presentations from a whopping eight finalists, each one offering unique selections for consideration. Here are some of my faves…

Left to Right: Dreamboat Lucy, Eliza Faulkner, Malorie Urbanovitch and Matiere Noire

I really love the casual femininity of the Dreamboat Lucy and Eliza Faulkner collections and the cool urban street style with great use of texture by Malorie Urbanovitch and Matiere Noire.

After what felt like forever with the anticipation building, the judges, which included industry experts like Jeanne Beker and Bernadette Morra (of FASHION Magazine) finally made the announcement we were all waiting for. They surprised everyone by announcing TWO WINNERS!

Winners Malorie Urbanovitch and Matiere Noire

Edmonton’s Malorie Urbanovitch and Montreal’s Matiere Noire will share the prize -  mentoring from industry experts, editorial coverage in FASHION Magazine, and a runway show at the Fall 2014 collections in Toronto. How exciting – congrats ladies!

Next we saw the latest collection from Montreal darling, Melissa Nepton. I’ve always loved Melissa’s soft feminine fabrics with great use of colour and prints and I’ve even worn her designs in my own photo shoots! The spring 2013 collection did not disappoint with great use of colour and print-blocking and her trademark sheer panels. Melissa usually works with column dress styles (like the first look shown below) so I love the addition of cute full skirts and drop waist dresses in this collection. You’ll find everything from florals, to polka dots to geometric prints in this lively spring collection – congrats Melissa!

Finally, Day 2 came to a close with the latest collection from Sid Neigum. Sid is a fan favourite after winning the TFI New Labels competition two years ago. I’ll admit it, I’m not usually a big fan of his androgynous collections – BUT, this won me over! I loved the delicate yet edgy femininity of this collection featuring full asymmetrical skirts, laser cut shift dresses and voluminous belted gowns. For a spring show I was surprised to see fall’s favourite colour burgundy in the mix, but with the lightweight fabric and cutouts, it really worked!

Another great night in the tents at David Pecaut Square!

Last night I wore a fabulous dress from the Rachel Sin F’13 collection. I love the colour blocking with deep green, white and black – such a flattering shape! I also wore jewellery from The Black Box Boutique, a watch from Caravelle New York, Aldo Shoes and a handbag from Danier. Stay tuned for the detailed outfit posts coming soon!
