Limes get tons of respect — at the bar. But this unsung citrus fruit has all sorts of surprising health, household and beautifying uses. Here are a few of our favorites.
Better your bod
Start your day with a warm glass of water with lime juice. This Ayurvedic tradition said to alkalize the body, fight inflammation, enhance digestion and promote weight loss. If nothing else, it’s hydrating and loaded with antioxidants and immunity-boosting vitamin C.
Defunk your microwave
Crusty, musty microwaves are no match for this simple five minute hack. Fill a microwave safe bowl with a half cup of water, two tablespoons of baking soda and half of a lime, then cook on high for about four minutes. Wipe off the muck loosened by the steam, and savor the citrus fresh scent.
Get handsy
Garlic, onions and other ingredients we love in our food can leave hands stinky after cutting. To banish the unsavory odor, scrub your hands with lime juice post-handling.
Something’s fishy
A spritz of citrus can tame pungent fish, and the same with your garbage disposal. After putting fish remnants in the garbage disposal, pour in some lime juice before turning it on to prevent your home from smelling like a marina.
Send ants marching
Citrus rind oils contain an extract (d-limonene) that’s toxic to ants — even dreaded fire ants. Instead of composting your lime peels, use them to create an ant pesticide (see DIY recipes here) that will be sure to eradicate ant mounds. If you’re more of a live and let live type, you can also spray the concoction in doorways and windowsills to keep the little buggers from invading your home.
