The 15th of August is a very important day in the history of our country – India. It was on this day in 1947 that India became independent. We won freedom after a hard struggle. On this day our first Prime Minister Pundit Jawaharlal Nehru unfurled The National Flag at The Red Fort for the first time. All the people irrespective of their caste, look and creed celebrate this day every year amidst great rejoicing. It is declared a public holiday. On this day we take a pledge to defend our freedom with all our might.
The Independence Day is celebrated all over India with great joy. People hold meetings. Fly the tricolor and sing the national anthem. There are great enthusiasms among them. In Delhi, the capital of India, this day is celebrated with great pomp and show. People gather in large numbers into the parade ground in front the red fort. There is a great hustle and bustle everywhere. They line up the roads all leading to the fort and eagerly wait for the arrival of the Prime Minter.
The foreign ambassadors and dignitaries also participate in the celebrations. The prime minster unfurls the national flag. A guard of honor is given by the local police and armed forces personnel. A salute of 21 guns is fired. The military band plays the national anthem. The Prime Minister greets the ambassadors seated at the parapet and delivers a speech. Homage is paid to those who sacrificed their lives for the freedom of our country. After the Prime Minister’s speech, the functions come to an end with the recital of our national anthem, ‘Jan Gina Manna’ and the crowd begins to melt away. The Independence Day reminds us of those patriots who fought and suffered to win freedom for us.

सदियों की गुलामी के पश्चात 15 अगस्त सन् 1947 के दिन आजाद हुआ। पहले हम अंग्रेजों के गुलाम थे। उनके बढ़ते हुए अत्याचारों से सारे भारतवासी त्रस्त हो गए और तब विद्रोह की ज्वाला भड़की और देश के अनेक वीरों ने प्राणों की बाजी लगाई, गोलियां खाईं और अंतत: आजादी पाकर ही चैन लिया। इस दिन हमारा देश आजाद हुआ, इसलिए इसे स्वतंत्रता दिवस कहते हैं।
अंग्रेजों के अत्याचारों और अमानवीय व्यवहारों से त्रस्त भारतीय जनता एकजुट हो इससे छुटकारा पाने हेतु कृतसंकल्प हो गई। सुभाषचंद्र बोस, भगतसिंह, चंद्रशेखर आजाद ने क्रांति की आग फैलाई और अपने प्राणों की आहुति दी। तत्पश्चात सरदार वल्लभभाई पटेल, गांधीजी, नेहरूजी ने सत्य, अहिंसा और बिना हथियारों की लड़ाई लड़ी। सत्याग्रह आंदोलन किए, लाठियां खाईं, कई बार जेल गए और अंग्रेजों को हमारा देश छोड़कर जाने पर मजबूर कर दिया। इस तरह 15 अगस्त 1947 का दिन हमारे लिए ‘स्वर्णिम दिन’ बना। हम, हमारा देश स्वतंत्र हो गए।
यह दिन 1947 से आज तक हम बड़े उत्साह और प्रसन्नता के साथ मनाते चले आ रहे हैं। इस दिन सभी विद्यालयों, सरकारी कार्यालयों पर राष्ट्रीय ध्वज फहराया जाता है, राष्ट्रगीत गाया जाता है और इन सभी महापुरुषों, शहीदों को श्रद्धांजलि दी जाती है जिन्होंने स्वतंत्रता हेतु प्रयत्न किए। मिठाइयां बांटी जाती हैं।
