The following stories are examples of this week's Election Roundup of 31 down ticket stories covering Sunday 11/6 through Wednesday 11/9. This is the final Election Roundup for 2016. We hope you have found this weekly publication useful.

(IL-Sen) Republican Mark Kirk explains that even though he says racist things he is not a racist By Walter Einenkel

A couple of weeks ago Sen. Mark Kirk (R-IL) was saying crazy racist, birther-esque things in a debate with Democratic challenger Tammy Duckworth. “Duckworth said “my family has served this nation in uniform going back to the Revolution. I’m a Daughter of the American Revolution. I’ve bled for this nation. Kirk’s response was: “I forgot that your parents came all the way from Thailand to serve George Washington.” While Duckworth’s mother is Thai, her father was, yes, a white person whose family had been in the U.S. since the Revolution.”

(AL-02) CSGOPOTD: Martha Roby-2016 Update By republicaninsanity

U.S. House Rep. Martha Roby, of Alabama's 2nd Congressional District, who has embarrassed herself on House Oversight Committee hearings on Planned Parenthood, and Benghazi. If she remains on that committee in the next Congress, look for her to continue to bumble about while discussing Hillary Clinton's e-mails.

(CA-Voting) Democrats making big gains in California voter registration by James Lambert

California Voter Registration: The California Secretary of State’s office has published updated voter registration statistics in advance of tomorrow’s vote, and boy, the trend line is pretty bleak for Republicans. Overall, statewide, Democrats have added over 750,000 voters to their ranks since 2012, while Republicans have lost just over 300,000 registered voters in the same time period. (Voters electing to express no party preference, whose ranks include many younger Hispanic voters, grew by nearly 1.3 million!)

Welcome to Election Roundup, formerly known as “Election Diary Rescue.” Look for this down ticket collection every Monday through the election. The Roundup team has compiled, described and linked down ticket diaries since 2006.  Archives

Election Roundup shines a light on candidates and issues that might otherwise be missed. It gives quick access to races and hopefully encourages people to write about contests that interest them, knowing their stories will get additional exposure on the Front Page.

Format and Tags
Writers can help the ER team by identifying the race in the title like this:
(NY-Sen) (FL-14) (GA-Gov). Using the "Elections" tag is also helpful and keep in mind that your first sentence or two is what we like to use in the description of your story when we can. This service is strictly for down ticket stories.

This edition of Election Roundup was made possible by the following: Carolina On My Mind, eeff, Jax Dem, Joieau, pittgreg, pucklady, randallt and ZenTrainer. Special thanks to Patriot Daily News Clearinghouse for publicity.

Please give this crew kudos, they were simply great!

Thank you for reading and writing!

See you in 2018!

(NC-Sen & Gov) NC-Gov & Sen: NYT Upshot/Siena College Poll Shows Toss Ups In Both Races    By poopdogcomedy

The Republican senator Richard Burr narrowly leads his Democratic challenger, Deborah Ross, 46 percent to 45 percent.  Attorney General Roy Cooper, the Democrat running for governor, leads by just one point, 47-46, over Gov. Pat McCrory, a Republican.

(NH-Sen & Gov) NH-Sen & Gov: UNH Poll Gives Hassan (D) A 4 Point Lead & Van Ostern (D) An 11 Point Lead By poopdogcomedy

A new University of New Hampshire Survey Center poll released with one full day remaining in campaign 2016 shows Democrat Hillary Clinton leading Republican Donald Trump in the Granite State and Democrats leading in the U.S. Senate and gubernatorial contests.

(NH-Sen) Hassan Surging! By Talmas

I’m sure there are a lot of very saddened Kossacks out here but lets cheer on Maggie Hassan who can drop kick the Ayotte OUT!

(NV-Sen) A Ray of Light: First Latina Senator, Democrat Catherine Cortez Masto Wins Reid’s Old Seat : By Patience John

After a close race fueled by record outside spending, Catherine Cortez Masto, a Democrat, won the Nevada Senate contest on Tuesday to become the first Latina senator. She defeated Representative Joe Heck to fill the seat of Senator Harry Reid, the Democratic minority leader, who is retiring after three decades in the Senate.

(CA-49) My Soon-to-be Congressman: Colonel Doug Applegate -- Closing for the Win in CA-49-It's been a Blast! by WildLilac

On Election Day eve, I can confirm that Doug Applegate has run a nearly flawless campaign, an incredibly disciplined operation as you might expect from a retired Marine Colonel and successful litigator.  Applegate hired the right people, respected their advice, and did what Hillary Clinton did when she ran for NY Senate — He conducted a Listening Tour. The Colonel showed up, never let up, never gave up, and never stopped evolving.

(FL-03) The laziest House incumbent of 2016 and other House seats that flipped on Tuesday  By Jeff Singer

On Tuesday, Republicans picked up three House seats while Democrats flipped nine (two California seats have not yet been called). Because of redistricting, there was no real doubt that the GOP would take FL-02, while Team Blue would gain FL-10 and VA-04. Below is a look at the other contests where one side or the other flipped a seat.

(TN-08) CSGOPOTD: Stephen Fincher- 2016 Update By republicinsanity

“Crazy/Stupid Republican of the Day” isn’t about to pause for an election hangover, we’re moving on to our 536th original profile, where we’ll be discussing outgoing U.S. House Represtentative Stephen Fincher, from Tennessee’s 8th Congressional District. Fincher was swept into office at the age of 37 in 2010 as a part of the Tea Party Wave, and after redistricting, held a highly conservative constituency… and he voted like it. Before he had even won office, however, Fincher was considered ethically suspect, as he had received a $250,000 loan towards his 2010 campaign from a bank who just so happened to have Fincher’s father on its board of trustees, then conveniently “forgot” to mention it on his financial disclosure forms.

(VA-07) VTRUMPTANIC Sinking in VA-7...Brat at Helm...Pence Lifeboat Sent in with...Pizzas? By Aleurophile

"Mike #Pence made an unannounced trip to Central Virginia today... All to see Dave Brat, rally supporters at Brat's campaign office," so reported NBC 12's Mike Valerio on Twitter.

(VA-10) The @RealDonaldTrump-@BarbaraComstock relationship: How will #VA10's Barbara spend Sunday evening? By A Siegel

This evening, the GOP nominee for president, Donald Trump,  will visit Virginia’s 10th district as part of the last minute ‘surge’ effort of his anti-Semitic, racist, homophonic, misogynistic, military-service demeaning, Gold-Star parent attacking, deceitful, ignorant, hateful, etc, etc, etc .. campaign.

(House) Blue November, Part 3: The House Will Be Close   By snowman3

In parts 1 and 2 of this series I outlined how Hillary Clinton will win the presidency comfortably, and that the Senate democrats will retake the Senate. Since then polls have fluctuated, but the structure of this race remains unchanged, in my opinion.

(House) My 2016 US House Elections Preview   By JGibson

With the election coming this Tuesday, here is my preview on the key US House elections that their state’s voters will be voting on Tuesday (or earlier if you already have done so).

State, Local and More

(CA-Various) CA-StSen, CA-Assembly: Surfs Up California! These are the Democrats that Will Ride the anti-Trump wave into Office by Sean023

Democrats control 52 seats (65%) in California's 80-seat state assembly and 26 seats (65%) in California's 40-seat state senate. Democrats need to pick up at least one seat in each chamber to reach the super-majority required to pass a state budget. The diarist details several State Senate and Assembly districts most likely to flip to the Democrats this cycle.

(CA-Ballot Issue) 2016 California Voter Initiative Endorsement Results By Truth Machine

Here are the voting results for initiatives in California during the 2016 election, along with a comparison of endorsements found on various websites I am now collecting. Although California votes Democratic overall, the voters certainly did not follow the recommendations of the Democratic or Republican parties.

(CA-Ballot Issue) California Voters are Geniuses By bobosquish

They legalized weed as a way to deal with the Trump presidency.

(MA) Mass legalized marijuana AND shot down charter schools By scamperdo

At least my beloved progressive home state, Massachusetts, once again came through and voted to legalize marijuana! Also, surprisingly question 2 on expanding charter schools went down 62% to 37%. That question was polling much closer so yet another polling failure tonight… at least a positive one in this small case.

(MN-St,House 60B) Minnesota elected the nation's first Muslim, Somali-American state representative By Walter Einenkel

Last night was not fun. Today and tomorrow and the next few weeks will continue to be shrouded by the fact that Donald Trump is our next president. That being said, there were bright moments, easily forgotten in last night’s nightmarish fever dream of an election. One bright moment was the election of Ilhad Omar to Minnesota’s state legislature.

(MN) Minnesota final results - Rural voters impact here, but could have been worse By Vega

The rural/blue collar wave was nowhere more evident in the First District where Democrat Tim Walz (a supposedly safe incumbent in a very rural district bordering Iowa) won by just over ½ percent.  Democrat Rick Nolan also won by just over ½ percent in the northern Eight District by running populist anti-big business ads in the last week.  The other two heavily fought Congressional races went to Republicans.  Bland GOP incumbent Erik Paulson won, which was expected, but the margin was larger than expected.

(MT-Gov) GREAT AD from Montana Governor Steve Bullock and Senator Jon Tester  By Back Porch philosopher

Montanans have consistently fought against a statewide sales tax.  It’s practically written into our genetic code at this point.  But when a billionaire from New Jersey, Republican candidate for governor Greg Gianforte, says the only tax he likes is the one that someone else pays, he sees a sales tax as the perfect solution. Governor Steve Bullock and Senator Jon Tester take the issue on with one of the best political ads of the season.  It’s really nice when politicians are actually people.

(NC-St. House-35) Here Is How I Fight Back. I Will Be NC's First Openly-Trans Candidate For The NC General Assembly! By Kalisiin

I got no time to grieve, no time to whine and moan.  Besides, there were a few bright spots in what was otherwise an unmitigated disaster.  We DID kick Pat McCrory to the curb.  Buck Newton will NOT be NC’s next Attorney General, so he will no longer be “fighting to keep our state straight.” Judge Bob Edmunds, who upheld The Snake (a Congressional District running along Interstate-85 that if you drove down the Interstate with both car doors open, you’d kill 90 percent of the residents of the District) — Bob Edmunds was defeated.  And The Snake was struck down by the Circuit Court.

(NY-St-Sen) NY-StSen-80: CSGOPOTD: Jon Girodes by republicinsanity

The latest in the ongoing series of Crazy/Stupid Republican of the Day, the diarist discusses Jon Girodes, racist and felon Republican candidate for New York State Senate for District 80. ”Welcome to “Crazy/Stupid Republican of the Day” here on Election Day, 2016, where the subject of our 535th original profile is none other than New York State Senate Candidate for District 80, Jon Girodes.

(TX-Houston) Houston/Harris County has gone blue, mostly. By mskitty

More D straight tickets than R, 53 to 45. Clinton over Trump by 54 to 42. We got rid of a rotten R District Attorney and put in a D one that there’s reasonable hope of being good. Dumped an R tax assessor  and a sheriff, and put in Dems.  In the state-wide races, for the Texas Supreme Court and the Court of Criminal Appeals, and “Railroad Commissioner" (got nothing to do with railroads anymore), Harris County voted for the Dem candidate in every race — all of whom lost every race after the rural/small-town vote came  in.

(TX-Houston) Small bright spots: Harris County, Texas By Texdude50

The result of that major turnout was a sweep of all the County offices. Kim Ogg is the new DA, Ed Gonzalez is the new Sheriff, Ann Harris Bennett is the new Tax Assessor. Some west-side candidates that we worked for didn’t make it, falling just short.

(Gov/Sen/House) Morning Digest: Democrats make one more buy for Russ Fiengold in the Wisconsin Senate race By  Daily Kos Elections

One week after the Democratic group Senate Majority PAC announced that they would spend $2 million in the Wisconsin Senate race, Politico reports that they've added another $1.5 million for the final days.

(State Legislatures) These are the 18 state legislative chambers to watch that could change hands in 2016 By Stephen Wolf

America’s historic presidential election between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump has rightly dominated the headlines, but voters will weigh in on crucial battles for state legislatures across the country, with the potential for far-reaching policy and political consequences.

(TX-Voting) Texas Election Primer by NoBlinkers

Texas IS a battleground — and more than that, should be.  It has two of the largest metro areas in the nation (Houston and DFW), and more than that, is majority minority: only 45% of the state is non-hispanic white.  This is prime territory for a Democratic pickup, if the DNC will put in the effort.

General

(Various) Daily Kos Elections final race ratings changes: We bet against Republican Joe Heck in Nevada by Jeff Singer

Jeff Singer makes his final race changes. NV-Sen, OR-Gov, WA-Gov, IL-Sen, CA-10, CA-25, CA-52 and NV-03 all move in the right direction. MI-06 and NV-01 go in the wrong direction and CA-17 goes nuts.

Thanks for visiting Election Roundup 2016. If you know of a story we missed, please let us know in comments or by kos mail and we’ll add it to the collection. Subject lists are edited for coverage.

Election Roundup

And now a few words from some of our dedicated team and a shout out to ten years of Kossacks doing this work.

JaxDem
This was my first year on the team and I am grateful for randallt's assistance and patience. Thanks too, to my dear friend, eeff  for tossing my name in the EDR hat and for taking my shift when Hurricane Matthew knocked out my power for awhile and my internet connection for several days. I learned a great deal while mining and read a number of diaries that I would have skipped over otherwise.  It really brought home to me how this is a "small world after all" which underscores the importance of  this weekly collection of diaries because we are indeed Stronger Together.

eeff
I really don't have anything to say R !

Ram
This was my first time doing the Roundup, and I learned a lot doing it.  Thanks for the opportunity; I enjoyed it. I really did enjoy it.  Thanks for your support and encouragement Randall.  Maybe when I visit the Asheville area, I will get a chance to meet you.

randallt
The best part of this project is getting such an expansive birds' eye view of the election as we process all these stories. I hope you found the roundup useful, interesting and worth your time.

The ER teams through the last six elections have spent hundreds of hours rescuing down ticket diaries to give them a second chance and an archived place in DK history. We have now topped 13,000. Please give these folks a shout out when you see them. Thanks for reading and WRITING!
