Copyright is a legal concept which is enacted by most governments. Copyrights grants the creator of an original work exclusive rights to its use and distribution, usually for a limited time and enables them,and to receive compensation for their work. Recently copyright -violation notices were issued to few video channels in Youtube.Few channels have uploaded Carnatic music rendition of compositions of saint Tyagaraja. Copyright shocker on Tyagaraja Kritis is turning the heat on in the South Indian states.

Fans of art form and few musicians have raised this issue. musicians feel it as the strike at the heart of the art form.Some online petition has also been launched and asking Youtube to talk on this matter. Marking the world music day a popular video channel,Parivadini uploaded a video on YouTube.This channel is quite famous in the Carnatic music circles,this channel have uploaded a recording of a concert in Chennai. After uploading that video the issue has escalated quickly.

The certain compositions of Tyagaraja which were part of the concert performance were infact copyrighted material. It was actually copyrighted by some famous recording houses. And they have claimed that the video which was uploaded by some video channel have copyrighted. And immediately the notices have been sent to the Video channel soon after uploading video,which was copy righted by few famous recording houses.

Content owner in YouTube is provided with several options to deal with the infringement.Usually these notices appear when when the owners of the original content flag an infringement when they are notified by a mechanism on YouTube called ‘Content ID.Whenever a video is uploaded the Content ID ‘ scans the video for violations and notifies the content owner if there are any.

It is kind of bizarre that anyone could claim the copyrights for compositions of Tyagaraja says Lalitha Ram,one of the co-founder of Video Channel, Parivadini. “Their [recording companies] right is restricted to the specific performance an artist has made for that one recording. There is no way they could claim copyright for the song itself,” he said.



Compositions such as Kana Kana Ruchira Kanaka Vasana set in Varali raga and O Rangasayi in Khamboji, Few channels in past claimed that they have copyrights of those songs and eventually they were removed from the YouTube as it was a copyright violation, in the past.

“Recording houses seem to be taking advantage of a flaw in the YouTube mechanism that does not recognise the nuances of a traditional art form and has been developed largely for the modern music industry in the West,” he says.

He points out “They call every successful contention a CR-Strike,” If any violation is made out on a particular YouTube channel for more than three times,the channel will be closed. YouTube spokesperson said to The Hindu, Reacting to this issue,he said, the organisation takes copyright issues very seriously.

YouTube spokesperson told The Hindu over email “We prohibit users from uploading infringing material and we cooperate with copyright holders to identify and promptly remove infringing content. If a content owner gets a copyright strike, it means that the video has been taken down from YouTube because a copyright owner sent us a complete legal request asking us to do so and we’re required by law to take down such content.” He further said this way – “We make several resources available to YouTube users on this.”
