We return with another edition of the Indie Spotlight, highlighting recent independent horror news sent our way. Today’s feature includes details on a Wes Craven art exhibition, the first sighting of Megafoot, a 100 zombie films graphical print, first photos from Australian Horror film, Barrow, an interview with actor, writer, and filmmaker Sean Stone, and much more:

The Horror Legacy of Wes Craven Exhibit Details: “Wes Craven has been feeding our collective horror consciousness since 1972, when his first feature, “The Last House on the Left,” debuted. That film was gritty, raw and terrifying, it still causes a guttural reaction some 40 years later. In his career, Wes has created some of the most memorable moments in horror cinema, from the torture scene in “The Serpent and the Rainbow,” to the Johnny Depp’s explosive scene in “A Nightmare on Elm Street,” to the first glimpse of Michael Berryman’s savagery in “The Hills Have Eyes.” He has given us iconic characters like Freddy Krueger and Ghostface and at times he has completely rewritten the genre. Each new film only adds to his legacy and ever increasing fan base.

The films of Wes Craven have influenced scores of film makers, writers, and artists. The horror/art connection was even acknowledged by Wes when he included the work of a number of Hyaena artists in 2011’s “Scream 4.” We figured it was time to pay tribute to the man whose vision has inspired so many in the dark art community. The art featured here is a pure celebration of horror, created by fans, to honor a director who has continuously fueled our nightmares. Thank you, Wes Craven.

To avoid fainting, keep repeating to yourself: It’s only an art exhibit. It’s only an art exhibit. It’s only an art exhibit.

On Exhibit: March 1 through March 31, 2014.

Opening Reception: Saturday, March 8th 8pm to Midnight.

Always FREE ADMISSION.

A Group Art Exhibit Featuring: Chet Zar, Clint Carney, D.W. Frydendall, James Bonner, Char Hall, Nicolas Caesar, Wyatt Teitzel, Jeff Rebner, Lou Rusconi, Mike Haffenden, Phil Joyce, Kat Philbin, Big Tasty, Adam Padilla, Donnie Green, Apricot Mantle, Michael Kelleher, Lupe Flores, Nick Arrietta, Chogrin, Cig Neutron, Robert Heckman, & Skip Crank.”

Megafoot Teaser and Development Details: ”If you are reading this, then the Colonel has deemed you worthy enough to be entrusted with the information which we are about to share with you.

The concept – based on an original idea and story by Justin Martell (Producer of Troma’s “Return to Nuke ‘Em High: Volumes 1 & 2″) and with a screenplay by Rolfe Kanefsky (award-winning screenwriter/director of “There’s Nothing Out There,” “The Hazing” and “Nightmare Man”), who is also attached to direct – was to create the ultimate warrior using enhanced chemical and engineering technology. When it was declared that the end product would be used exclusively in conjunction with the U.S. military, Colonel Hankle and his team immediately took control. A research facility in the backwoods of the American Mid-West was built, and a top-notch group of scientists was dispatched – along with some healthy, willing volunteers – to commence the operation. Alas, the human subjects proved to be incompatible with the procedure. All seemed lost… and then we made the most incredible discovery.

A new type of creature. Gigantanthropus Crypticus, more commonly known as a Sasquatch, or Bigfoot. We thought it was a mere myth, a projection of Man’s fantastical imagination, but we were wrong. They exist.

Just the confirmation that these beasts inhabit this world would alone shake the foundation of Science across the globe. But we could not pass up this amazing opportunity: fate, it seemed, was smiling upon us. Our endeavors would not be wasted. These hairy mammals proved to be a far more accurate match to our program than mere humans. By combining a unique combination of Nature and Cybernetics, we will produce the most dangerous being on the planet. The quest to create the ultimate warrior shall continue. Project: Megafoot.”

He walks through a melancholic landscape of missing person posters and floral tributes to roadside deaths, before chancing upon another car, but one which ironically is also broken down. Not only will this car provide Paul with salvation and suffering, but force him to face his own recent past actions and a provide him with a potential chance to redeem himself.

3 versions of Black Spot are available to view – a 3D version requiring the classic red/ cyan 3D glasses, a stereoscopic 3D version for viewing on 3D tvs and a standard 2D version for those who cannot view the 3D – though Luther recommends a 3D version, as that was the main reason for making the film.”

New Details on Northstar: “Northstar is set in a post-apocalyptic wilderness where a mysterious Cataclysm has wiped out most of the population in a single day. The story picks up a few years after this event, and follows a group of survivors that have managed to eke out an existence. We focus on a father in this group who has been trying to revive his daughter after she went into a coma on the same day everyone died. This girl becomes the center of intrigue when a woman appears from the woods and claims the child is important. The problem is, this strange woman has been followed by a much larger military force that represents what’s left of the Government, and they are hell-bent on securing the woman and whoever learns a secret she may be holding about what caused the Cataclysm. Lines are drawn, loyalties are tested, and a conflict that will determine the fate of the country is waged in the north woods.

Our influences for this project are varied, but we typically like to describe Northstar as a cross between John Carpenter’s early action movies (Assault on Precinct 13, Escape from New York) and Stephen King’s early supernatural novels (Dead Zone, Firestarter, with a hint of The Stand).”

First Details on Nightmare Code: “Director/Co-Writer Mark Netter invites you to join the Nightmare, with an opportunity to appear in the sci-fi thriller Nightmare Code, straight from your home computer, tablet or mobile device.

Nightmare Code utilizes surveillance cameras, PC cam, video call capture and eyeglass cam to tell the story of a troubled software startup that is creating an advanced form of behavior recognition software capable of reading the thoughts and feelings of people on camera regardless of what they’re actually saying.

The themes of the movie could not be more timely: the mounting intrusion of technology into our lives and interpersonal relations, the contemporary surveillance state and the increasing unreliability of the digital image. Suspense builds relentlessly through multiscreen surveillance views that give the viewers the sense of being manipulated by the code itself.

As a gifted young programmer with secrets of his own, Brett Desmond (played by Andrew J. West, coming soon in The Walking Dead), frantically works to complete the coding; in time the software actually turns on him, modifying his behavior in frightening ways.

The film is nearing completion and the producers have launched a crowd funding campaign on Indiegogo to raise the finishing funds for marketing and distribution. The campaign runs March 3rd to April 2nd.”

Don’t Look in the Basement 2 Production Details: “S.F. Brownrigg, is one of the unsung heroes of drive in horror. His first film Don’t Look in the Basement was a theatrical smash hit in the early seventies. And even today many horror directors credit Brownrigg for inspiration when they began their careers.

Forty years later, Anthony Brownrigg, S.F. Brownriggs son, and director of the award winning Red Victoria, has teamed up with David Rennke “Pearl”, Daniel Redd of RDM Productions, and Andrew Sensenig “Upstream Color” to bring a sequel to the long time favorite to the screen.

While the specific plot has been kept tightly under wraps, the sequel revolves around what happened to the only surviving patient from the original film, and what happens when he is brought back to the original clinic where the grizzly murders occurred.

Many of the original cast, and crew are also involved in one way or another. Daniel Redds father Robert Redd, was the owner of PSI film labs that developed the film for the original. Camilla Carr, from the original cast has come back to play a different role in the sequel. And Jack Bennett II, son of effects artist Jack Bennett will join in through post production for visual effects. And even Libby Hall, mother of Anthony who was known in the sixties for “The Naked Witch” a Larry Buchannan film, has come out of retirement to round out the cast.

Andrew Sensenig “Upstream Color” will play the lead, along with Arianne Martin “Red Victoria, Other Side of Paradise”, and Frank Mosley “Wuss, Upstream Color”. Also cast are Earl Browning II, horror icon Jim O’Rear “The Hospital”, Scott Tepperman “Ghost Hunters International”, and Megan Emerick.

The script was written by Anthony Brownrigg, and Megan Emerick, and the film will be shot on location at the original house used in the 1973 film located in Tehuacana Texas. Principal photography begins in late March 2014 with an expected release later in the year.”

Indie Spotlight Interview with Sean Stone

by Tamika Jones

Hi, Sean. Thanks so much for speaking with me today. Can you tell our readers when you knew you wanted to be a filmmaker?

Sean: I have known since the age of 7 that I wanted to be a writer. At that time, I didn’t think about making films as a career. I just literally enjoyed the idea of storytelling. That was my passion. Then, I’d say like 14, 15, 16 that I started thinking maybe I should be a director, and maybe follow in my father’s footsteps. The only way to have the story told the way you want it is to direct the film yourself. You can’t just write the script with your own vision in mind and then hand it over to someone else to direct.

Do you have a preference when it comes to writing, acting, and directing or do you enjoy doing them all the same?

Sean: To me, it is a storytelling process. I just love making movies. It doesn’t matter which role it is as long as it is integral to what I can offer the movie, you know. There will be some projects that I envision, and I want to write, and I feel very passionate about writing, but when it comes to actually directing let’s say, I don’t always feel they need me as the director. As an actor it’s like I can play certain roles I feel good with, but acting is not my passion. Each film is unique in that regard.

When you’re the director you are responsible on all levels. It’s a little more prestigious, but at the same time more risky. If you want to be a director you have to feel it. You have to feel that desire to carry it through all the way.

Can you tell us about your experience making Greystone Park? What made you want to tell this story?

Sean: Right. My experience and my journey is tied to that location – that hospital space. It came organically. It wasn’t something I wanted to make into a film like I went exploring, looking for ghosts for the movie or anything like that. I had literally spoken with Alex Wraith, and he didn’t want to see a movie about it, he envisioned it as more of a slasher movie at a mental hospital.

I think he was drawn very much to that amazing and haunting location. It would have been great to have been able to shoot there. Unfortunately, we couldn’t always shoot there. To talk more about what drew me to this project, I definitely believe in this other world of paranormal activity and shadows. Since the first movie, there has been an explosion of interest. At that time, 2009, I think 2008, every horror movie coming out essentially dealt with demons. There was a huge interest in possession. It’s international right now, and this film was inspired by my own personal experience. It was always going to be off my own experience and a very personal story.

So, you’ve had encounters with the supernatural?

Sean: Oh, yeah. I hope to make a documentary one day just to share like the actual experiences. I can get a lot of it on camera. This film was inspired by actual incidents of possession and hearing voices or echoes. Seeing things move by themselves.

If you are not careful, part of you can get sucked in to these evil places. You can lose your soul if you are not careful. So, you better watch it. The part in Peter Pan where he is keeping track of his shadow. I think it is a metaphor for, you know, losing a part of his soul.

Your character in the film seemed kind of skeptical at first and then kind of got sucked up into it. Are you more of a skeptic or a firm believer now?

Sean: No, I’m still skeptical. But, I believe in every, actually I believe in pretty much everything people describe as occurring. Like when people experience UFO’s. The question is: “is it all in my mind?” I definitely don’t doubt that people really believe these things, and I found out for myself that they exist. You don’t know really if there’s a shared delusion. It’s all about perception. That’s the reality that we are dealing with.

We only see what our eyes are able to see. There are different kinds of light and our eyes only pick up about 1 percent of that. So, there is a lot that we miss. So, that’s why I’m always skeptical. I want to experience it for myself. I want to see it for myself. I want to feel it for myself.

It’s true. Especially because there’s so little that we know about our brains, it’s such a complex organ. You know, you could be hallucinating. You could be having night terrors. It could be anything.

Sean: And I mean… What’s causing it? At the end of the day, we know that there is sleep paralysis, and then there’s physical expression, which some people would call night terrors. But they also have strong spiritual experiences with night terrors. People see everything from aliens, to shadow people, you know, dead people, and I don’t doubt there is a reality in their interaction.

Have you gone to any other psychiatric hospitals like Greystone?

Sean: We broke into a bunch of places, and also some where we were legally allowed to be there. We ended up shooting for example at Letchworth Village, Creedmoor, and Linda Vista in Los Angeles.

On an episode of Buzzsaw, the show you co-host with Tyrel Ventura, you mentioned that you made a film called Singularity.

Sean: Yes, it’s a short film.

Are there any topics that you have discussed on the show that ever challenged a perception that you already had about something?

Sean: Buzzsaw is basically where mainstream stories go to die. I think what we are doing is something to what RT [Russia Today] is doing now. We challenge the mainstream media. We cover the controversial things the government is doing. We acknowledge conspiratorial subjects. I think it’s important to have that. I think it’s important to have dialogue that isn’t always defined by facts. There’s few facts in reality. There’s few facts and and a lot of perception. Like science, science is rarely a law or facts, usually theory. So, we have to play with theory.

Well, I look forward to the zombie apocalypse story.

Sean: You know the zombie apocalypse is funny because people think zombies look a certain way, but if you look around you and pay attention, you can find at least five zombies a day.

Now what definition are you using to define a zombie?

Sean: People who have this blank look on their face and are totally empty inside. Walking around with no purpose in life.

What advice would you give anyone who was hoping to break into the film business?

Sean: More than anything, work on being honest with yourself. Breaking in is hard. So, you need perseverance. What is it that’s so important? Hoping to be famous is not a good reason to want to do this. You know, a lot people are enchanted by the social royalty. Celebrities have become our royalty. All I can say is just be honest with yourself.
