IN THE NEWS

Let’s call the whole thing off: Unhappy with CNBC’s handling of the October 28 debate, Republican National Committee chairman Reince Priebus on Friday sent an open letter to NBC News chairman Any Lack saying the party is “suspending the partnership” on the grounds the CNBC debate had been “conducted in bad faith,” including a “petty and mean-spirited tone” meant to embarrass the candidates. CNBC and NBC News, of course, are both are divisions of NBCUniversal. “This is a disappointing development,” responded NBC News, which had been scheduled to hold the February 26 face-off with Telemundo and National Review as partners. “However, along with our debate broadcast partners at Telemundo we will work in good faith to resolve this matter with the Republican Party.”

What do you think about the GOP pulling the debate from NBC? Let us know in the new Cynopsis poll: http://cynopsis.com/poll/.

Surprise! AMC renewed The Walking Dead, the number one show on television among coveted A18-49ers, for a seventh season, as well as live after-show Talking Dead. “Thank goodness someone had a Magic 8-Ball with them in our many long internal meetings about these renewals. When, on the third shake, ‘without a doubt’ filled the murky blue screen, we knew we had to proceed,” joked Charlie Collier, president of AMC, SundanceTV and AMC Studios. The zombie drama delivered 18.2 million viewers and 12 million A18-49 in Live+3 ratings on October 25, while Talking Dead drew 7.3 million viewers and 4.6 million in the demo.

ABC upped its order for freshman The Muppets from 13 to 16 episodes. The series starring Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy was planned as a limited run.

Michelle Obama will have company on a visit this week to U.S. military personnel in Qatar: Conan O’Brien. The late night host will take his TBS show on the road, performing for the troops while the First Lady focuses on the work of Joining Forces, supporting the military, veterans and their families. The trip will be taped to air as part of Conan later this year.

Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Disney-owned ABC will air a special on November 23 dedicated to Disney’s highly anticipated Star Wars: The Force Awakens. On hand will be director J.J. Abrams and stars Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver and John Boyega. Film launches December 18.

COMING UP

Suddenly, the reclusive singer is everywhere, at least at NBC. Adele will perform at NYC’s Radio City Music Hall on November 17, an event that will air as a one-hour special on the network on Monday, December 14 at 10p. The Grammy winner will also perform on Saturday Night Live on November 21, and on The Tonight Show November 23. Her new album, 25, will be released globally on November 20.

Do the math: The first day of ABC Family’s “25 Days of Christmas” is…December 1. This year’s event includes remastered versions of Jim Henson holiday specials The Bells of Fraggle Rock and Emmet Otter’s Jug-Band Christmas. Kicking things off: 1996 movie The Preacher’s Wife on Tuesday, December 1 at 7p.

Season 11 of Keeping Up With the Kardashians launches Sunday, November 15 at 9p on E!, followed by the sophomore season debut of The Royals at 10p.

The Africa Channel is going to great lengths – literally – for its new morning show. TAC’s SVP, programming & production Narenda Reddy explains in the new Cynsiders.

There’s a new crop of shows coming up at RFD-TV. The rural network is premiering agricultural docu-series American Harvest on Tuesday, November 3 at 9:30p, New Zealand-set farm series Rural Delivery on Thursday, November 5 at 8:30a and country music show Ray Stevens’ Nashville on Saturday, November at 8:30p.

DIGITAL DOINGS

Event series 11.22.63, based on the Stephen King bestseller, premieres on Hulu Monday, February 15. James Franco stars as a history teacher who goes back in time to prevent the assassination of President Kennedy.

Netflix ordered a fifth season of Longmire. The streaming service made the announcement on its Facebook page.

COURTROOM DRAMA

Cox Communications got a $6.31 million wrist slap from a federal court in Oklahoma. In a class-action lawsuit, customers complained they had to lease set-top boxes in order to receive premium services. “We’ve filed a motion to overturn the verdict and believe we have solid grounds,” responded Cox.

A lawsuit accuses Quantico producer Mark Gordon of lifting the idea for the freshman ABC drama from a 1999 CNN documentary, Quantico: The Making of an FBI Agent. Filmmakers Jamie Hellman and Barbara Leibovitz Hellman and exec Paula Paizes claim they signed a deal with the Mark Gordon Company in 2002 for a project based on the doc that never materialized, but “the plot for Quantico substantially resembles the plotlines.”

Starz former SVP sales and affiliate marketing Keno V. Thomas, fired a year ago, claims in a lawsuit he was terminated for “his whistleblowing, his refusal to participate in illegal activities, and his advocacy on behalf of women and minorities.”Said a Starz spokesperson, "Normally, we would not comment on pending litigation, and, in this instance the company has not even been served. However, based on reading the complaint in the press, rest assured that Starz, as well as the other defendants cited, will defend themselves vigorously against these scurrilous, unsubstantiated and offensive attacks by a disgruntled former employee.”

CASTING

Elizabeth Rohm (Stalker) will recur on season three of TNT’s The Last Ship. Series returns in summer 2016.

ADVERTISING & BRANDS

Seven of the brands with the most talked-about commercials were restaurants, found a study by Keller Fay Group and Analytic Partners. The top three brands in the word-of-mouth metrics were Papa John’s, Little Caesars and Applebee’s. Also in the top ten were Red Lobster, Olive Garden, Jack in the Box and KFC. Non-eating-related brands making conversation were AXE, Head & Shoulders and Lexus. “Papa John’s created the perfect recipe for conversation – its use of celebrity spokespeople, strategic media buys during sporting and other major events, as well as its use of clear brand messaging,” said Brad Fay, COO at Keller Fay. “The leading non-restaurant brand that drove conversations with TV ads was AXE. They are a great example of using humor and sexiness to spark discussion.” Why does word of mouth matter? “Word of mouth is the invisible hand of marketing effectiveness,” said Fay. “If a brand isn’t creating an ad that people want to talk about, they are losing a significant piece of potential consumer dollars.”
