Hulu will exclusively premiere a series of Halloween themed B-movies in a series called 13 Nights of Elvira to start on Oct. 19. A new reality-competition series on AOL featuring Martha Stewart called Shriek or Chic: Martha’s Haute Halloween Challenge, debuted yesterday. The six episodes, in partnership with Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, will follow three competing fashion designers at New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology until a winner is chosen by Stewart herself. A new ep will hit the platform every day until Oct. 12.

Evolve Media acquired the lesbian lifestyle and community site, AfterEllen.com, from Viacom. The brand will now be part of the TotallyHer women’s lifestyle publication. “AfterEllen produces fantastic content for a valuable audience,” Co-Founder and President of Evolve Media Brian Fitzgerald told Cynopsis.

Netflix acquired the thriller The Honorable Woman through a pact with BBC Worldwide yesterday. The eight-part miniseries focuses on a woman, played by Maggie Gyllenhaal, who witnesses the assassination of her Israeli arms vendor father.

Funny or Die launched Funny or Die News, which will be headed by Dan Abramson, who founded FoD’s digital magazine, The Occasional. “We are very excited,” wrote Abramson in a note on the site, “to craft a world where news junkies and humor fans can find common ground.” Prominsing anywhere from 5-1000 stories/day, the show will be available for viewers on FoD’s mobile apps and on the web.

The New York Times’ documentary vertical Op-Docs released Three Short Films About Peace on NYTimes.com. The series stars Nobel Peace Prize winner Leymah Gbowee, Nobel Laureate Lech Walesa and humanitarian and musician Bob Geldof in three vids totaling 50 minutes.

Digital fitness channel Acacia TV debuted a new Dance and Be Fit workout with Latin Steps! Yesterday. Seven other dances in the Dance and Be Fit series are also available to view, which can be accessed at AcaciaLifestyle.com/tv, Samsung Smart TVs, Apple devices and its Roku channel.

Hulu Plus CEO Mike Hopkins is considering cutting back on the number of ads that are run on the paid service. The New York Post reports no final decisions have been made, but the potential move comes in light of the service serving as many ads as broadcast TV. Hulu showed users 82.3 ads a month compared to YouTube’s average 32.3 ads per viewer, according to Comscore December 2013 data.

AD PLATFORMS

Delivery Agent announced a deal with Overstock to allow consumers to shop directly from Smart TVs and connected devices with Delivery Agent’s ShopTV platform. “Consumers interact with brands online, on their cellphones and on their tablets – enhancing the way they can interact via television is the natural evolution,” Delivery Agent CEO Mike Fitzsimmons said.

MOBILE PLATFORMS + APPS

WeatherNation TV launched its first app on the Xbox 360 yesterday. The app features a live stream of what’s currently on air 24 hours a day, on-demand video segments from local news and affiliates, and current or weekly forecasts.

TECHNOLOGY

Apple may be refreshing the iPad after all. The tech giant announced an event yesterday set for October 16. Apple is expected to update its thinner and lighter iPad Air and iPad Mini, along with a new operating system and Mac laptops.

DigitasLBi hired Jennifer Streigel as Senior Vice President of Brand Strategy. She was most recently Global Senior Marketing Director at Kimberly-Clark.

Bravo Media announced that Robert Mancini has been promoted to Vice President, Content, Bravo Digital. He has been Bravo Editorial Director since 2010.
