IN THE NEWS

On the heels of the announced merger of comScore and Rentrak, CBS said it will factor in SVOD data in Nielsen TV ratings, the first broadcast net to do so. “From day one, we made it a priority for CBS All Access to provide the most sophisticated measurement capabilities and have been working closely with Nielsen to implement Digital in TV Ratings,” said Marc DeBevoise, EVP and GM of CBS Digital Media. “We look forward to working closely with Nielsen to further expand measurement across even more platforms in the near future.”

Trust in the news media ties an all-time low, according to a new Gallup poll, with only 4 in 10 Americans saying they have “a great deal” or “fair amount” of confidence that news is being reported accurately. That’s down from a high of 55 percent in 1998 and 1999. While 45 percent of respondents 50 or older reported they trusted media, the number dips to 36 percent for Millennials.

A+E Networks, home to the Critics’ Choice Television Awards and the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards, is combining the shows into one, three-hour event. Live show will air Sunday, January 17 at 8p on A&E, Lifetime and LMN.

The Non-Fiction Producers Association added production companies Half Yard Productions (Say Yes to the Dress); Park Slope Productions (Alaskan Bush People) and Stephen David Entertainment (The Men Who Built America) to its ranks. Launched in July 2014, the non-profit trade group dedicated to maintaining, growing and nurturing the documentary and nonfiction TV production industry, now includes 37 companies.

Volleyball pro/actress Gabrielle Reece will host NBC’s upcoming STRONG, a reality competition from Sylvester Stallone, Dave Broome (The Biggest Loser) and Holly Wofford. 25/7 Productions is producing in association with Sony Pictures Television.

KID STUFF

The Jim Henson Company signed media deals around the globe for select titles from its classics library, including Fraggle Rock, Farscape and Farscape: The Peacekeeper Wars, Construction Site and The Wubbulous World of Dr. Seuss.

ADVERTISING

The new TiVo Bolt allows users to skip entire commercial breaks, versus the previous 30-second feature. “The TiVo Bolt arrives at a time of piqued interest in both connected devices and commercial avoidance,” said Tom Rogers, TiVo’s president and CEO. “The clear demand of consumers is for a TV experience that quickly delivers them exactly what they want the instant they turn on the screen. Bolt is a game changer.”

While consumer trust in digital ads has not improved in two years (48 percent of those surveyed said they completely or somewhat trust video ads), two thirds of people surveyed said they trust consumer opinions posted online, according to Nielsen. “The power of digital ad formats cannot be underestimated, as they offer many advantages for achieving effective reach,” said Randall Beard, president, Nielsen Expanded Verticals. “But few brands have mastered online word-of-mouth marketing techniques, the results of which can go viral very quickly. Passionate brand advocates can be powerful allies to amplify your message, but you need to give them a reason to talk.” Brand-managed online channels also got high marks from respondents, with 70 percent saying they completely or somewhat trust the sites.

For help targeting Twitter tastemakers, check out the October 22 Cynopsis webinar, The New Influencer Marketing. On hand will be panelist Josh Weinberg, SVP of Digital Strategy for Discovery, who says, “Scoring with Twitter influencers has become a kind of media hat trick – they are fans, they are critics, they are sometimes brands onto themselves.Igniting, engaging and empowering them with our content is key to creating buzz and maximum reach.” More info is here.
