BY THE NUMBERS
The extent of time-shifting varies considerably across the broadcast nets and some cablers are experiencing more time-shifting versus the prior three quarters, according to TiVo’s State of TV Report for Q3 2015. Fox had the largest percentage of time-shifted programming with 60 percent, per TiVo’s data, followed by CW (57 percent), ABC (56 percent), CBS (54 percent) and NBC (46 percent). In cable, TNT and Bravo were tops (67 percent), versus 65 percent for Lifetime, 64 percent for Syfy and 59 percent for MTV. Why the 3Q15 bump? “During the summer time people are time-shifting viewing even more as they fit their favorite series into their schedule,” Frank Foster, GM & SVP, TiVo Research, tells Cynopsis.
Americans spend more time than anyone else watching television, according to Ofcom’s latest International Communications Market Report. State-siders averaged 4 hours and 42 minutes per day in front of the tube in 2014, about an hour more than people in the UK and Germany and two hours more than the Chinese.
RETURNING SERIES
Season two of Disney XD’s The 7D, a take-off on the Seven Dwarfs, premieres Saturday, January 23 at 9:30a. Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne will guest on an upcoming episode as parents to a character voiced by Kelly Osbourne.
Amazon went three for three – originals The Man in the High Castle, Red Oaks and Hand of God, which all launched in 2015, were renewed for second seasons.
Friday Night Tykes kicks off season three Tuesday, January 19 at 9p on Esquire. Pint-sized athletes are from the 10- and 11-year-old division of the Texas Youth Football Association.
NEW SERIES
Discovery is fishing for more viewers with a spin-off of Emmy-winning hit reality show Deadliest Catch. The new series, set in an area along the Oregon coast known “the graveyard of the Pacific,” is slated for a fall 2016 premiere. Deadliest Catch averaged 3.6 million viewers this season.
Entertainment Studios announced a firm go for comedy game show Funny You Should Ask, for fall 2016 in broadcast strip syndication and cable. Exec producer will be Scott Satin (Hollywood Squares).
Esquire introduces its second scripted series, Beowulf, on Saturday, January 23 at 10p. One-hour drama based on the classic English poem stars Kieran Bew (Da Vinci’s Demons) and William Hurt (Damages).
ADVERTISING & BRANDS
Turner’s End of Year Report noted that across screens and platforms for 2015, the portfolio reached over 75 percent of adults 18+ per month representing $4.7 trillion in spending power, with Turner viewers accounting for 84 percent of car purchases last year and 82 percent of movie-goers.
TV and digital ad revenue keeps climbing. Standard Media Index’s U.S. ad market tracker index showed a 23 percent lift in total market in November versus year-ago, with television up 17 percent. Cable rose 18 percent and broadcast had a 15 percent year-over-year boost. “Strong consumer spending in the lead up to the holidays coupled with a strengthening TV market, driven by the power of NFL ratings, has delivered the highest monthly advertising spend seen since SMI started tracking agency bookings in 2009. November’s result is a staggering 16% higher than the previous record month, demonstrating the faith major brands have in the ad market to drive brand awareness and sales,” said James Fennessy, SMI’s chief commercial officer.
What are the keys to implementing a successful media quality strategy? There three important steps, says Integral Ad Science’s Bobby Bailey. Find out more in the latest Cynsiders.

The first three episodes of upcoming ABC Family drama Recovery Road are available on the Watch ABC Family app, Hulu and Video on Demand now through the series premiere Monday, January 25 at 9p. The premiere will also be available as a free digital download on iTunes, Amazon Video and Google Play.
Hulu canceled animated series The Awesomes after three seasons. Seth Meyers and Mike Shoemaker created and exec produced the show about a superhero team.
Making good on its promise to launch a low-cost broadband service prior to its acquisition of Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks, Charter Communications announced a plan for $14.99, for eligible low-income customers. “Our industry-leading low-cost broadband service is just one of the many benefits these transactions will bring to our customers,” said Tom Rutledge, Charter CEO. “We look forward to providing this superior broadband service to underserved families and seniors throughout Charter’s footprint.”
