IN THE NEWS

Sumner Redstone, controlling shareholder of Viacom and CBS, will step down from his position on the Viacom Board of Directors after the company’s annual meeting on February 6. The 93-year-old Redstone will “continue to participate in board meetings in a non-voting role,” said Viacom. Last week, Redstone and daughter Shari Redstone put the kibosh on a proposal to explore a merger with CBS, and named Bob Bakish as permanent president and CEO of Viacom.

She’s ba-a-a-ack: Omarosa Manigault rose to prominence as an polarizing contestant on season 1 of The Apprentice in 2004; now she’s been named to president-elect Donald Trump’s transition team. Manigault, who in September said, “Every critic, every detractor, will have to bow down to President Trump,” also appeared on Celebrity Apprentice and collaborated with Trump on 2010 dating show The Ultimate Merger.

Station groups will have their own summit on January 18 at NATPE, with a new track of sessions focused on local TV issues like how GMs lead in a digital world, and the future of the relationships between local broadcasters and syndicated content providers. The NATPE conference runs January 17-19 in Miami.

Robert Durst, who was caught on tape appearing to confess to murder on 2015 HBO documentary The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst, blames the blurt on drugs. In a March 2015 jailhouse interview filed in L.A. County Superior Court last week, Durst tells prosecutors, “When I did the interview for The Jinx I was on meth. The whole time I was on meth…. I’m surprised my lawyer let me go ahead with it.” Durst is now serving a seven-year term for illegal possession of a revolver at the time of his arrest.

ADVERTISING

Seven companies are teaming for a consortium designed to handle an increasingly complicated advertising ecosystem. Adstream, Comcast Technology Solutions, Burns Entertainment & Sports Marketing, Entertainment Communications Network, Synco Services Digital Media, Yangaroo and The Team Companies hope to, among other things, pinpoint best approaches for file-sharing, talent and rights usage and analytics, eliminate operational waste, and use a common metadata source.

Add a Publicis Groupe subsidiary to the companies connected to an investigation into potential bid-rigging and price fixing. “As part of the investigation led by the U.S. Department of Justice Antitrust Division concerning video production and post-production practices in the advertising industry, one of the subsidiaries of Publicis Groupe received a subpoena dated December 14, 2016,” said the company on Friday. “Publicis Groupe, supported by external counsel, will fully and productively collaborate with the investigation.” Two Omnicom subsidiaries also received subpoenas; the holding company said it was “fully cooperating with the investigation.” A division of Interpublic Group had received its own subpoena the week prior.

CASTING

Set for Universal Cable Productions and YouTube action thriller pilot Impulse (wt): Maddie Hasson (Twisted), Sarah Desjardins (Wayward Pines), Missi Pyle (Gone Girl), Enuka Okuma (How to Get Away with Murder) and Craig Arnold (Degrassi: The Next Generation).

Also joining a Netflix show: Alex Rich (True Detective), who will recur on straight-to-series comedy GLOW, inspired by the true story of a 1980s female wrestling league.

Jennifer Landon (Banshee) will recur on season 2 of TNT’s Animal Kingdom. The Daytime Emmy winner for As the World Turns is a daughter of the late Michael Landon.

Disney XD’s new Ducktales, premiering in summer 2017, will feature David Tennant as Scrooge McDuck; Danny Pudi, Ben Schwartz and Bobby Moynihan as the voices of Huey, Dewey and Louie; Beck Bennett as Launchpad McQuack; Toks Olagundoye as Mrs. Beakley, and Kate Micucci as Webby Vanderquack.

DIGITAL DATA

Comcast, Universal Pictures Home Entertainment, Paramount Home Media Distribution and Sony Pictures Home Entertainment are teaming for enhanced movie extras, a new home entertainment offering on Xfinity X1 that will allow fans to engage with online content while watching a film. Accessible with the digital purchase of participating titles, the offering combines technology and content to enable dynamic, interactive, and integrated internet content directly within the movie-watching experience. “We’re excited to work with these studios on this ground-breaking innovation to redefine the home entertainment movie-watching experience,” said Daniel Spinosa, General Manager of Movies, Pay-Per-View and Commerce, Comcast Cable. “We are actively working with our programming partners to deliver next-generation, enhanced entertainment experiences for all content including movies, events, sports, and news.”

Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale, based on the Margaret Atwood novel, premieres April 26. Dystopian drama stars Elisabeth Moss (Mad Men) and Joseph Fiennes (Shakespeare in Love).

After a scathing review of his restaurant appeared in Vanity Fair, president-elect Donald Trump tweeted the magazine was in “way down, big trouble, dead!” Result: VF sold 100 times the number of subscriptions that day than it normally would, and launched a digital marketing campaign directing readers to subscribe to the “magazine Trump doesn’t want you to read.”

Canada’s Rogers Communications struck a long-term strategic partnership with Comcast to bring Rogers customers Comcast’s X1 IP-based video platform. “This partnership is great news for our customers,” said Alan Horn, Chairman and interim CEO, Rogers Communications. “We’re bringing our customers a world-class IPTV service with the most advanced features available in the market today.”
