Hulu has acquired exclusive subscription video on-demand rights to new and upcoming FX and FXX series via a pact with Twentieth Century Fox Television Distribution. The deal includes Tyrant, The Strain, Married and You’re the Worst. The shows will become available on the Hulu Plus subscription service ahead of their second season premieres. Hulu also has exclusive SVOD rights to subsequent seasons.

IN THE NEWS

Dan Abrams is stepping down as co-anchor of ABC‘s Nightline. Chief national correspondent Byron Pitts has been named as his replacement. Abrams will return to running the company he founded, Abrams Media, which includes websites like Mediaite. He will, however, retain his post as the network’s chief legal analyst.

Can’t wait to see Aria, Emily, Hanna and Spencer on the Tuesday, January 6 winter premiere of Pretty Little Liars? ABC Family is giving viewers a sneak peek of the episode during its broadcast of The Hunger Games on Monday, December 29 at 8p.

Ashley Tisdale, executive producer of ABC Family‘s Young & Hungry, is stepping out from behind the camera again. The actress is returning to the series as lesbian magazine editor Logan Rawlings on Season 2′s third episode. Tisdale appeared in an episode during the show’s freshman season and shared a kiss with Emily Osment’s Gabi.

BBC America has set a premiere date for Season 3 of Orphan Black. The series, starring Tatiana Maslany, returns Saturday, April 18, 2015.

The growing list of performers on Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve continues. Eve Brantley Gilbert, Ella Henderson, Nick Jonas, Nico & Vinz and Train have joined the mix. Fergie is hosting the celebration, which airs at 8p on ABC.

British television personality Katie Hopkins has gone on the record with her controversial views, saying that the solution to obesity is simple: eat less and work out more. In the two-part special Fat and Back [wt], airing on Sunday, January 18 and Sunday, January 25 at 10p on TLC, Hopkins sets out to nearly double her body weight before aiming to lose it in an attempt to prove her theory true.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

HBO has picked up an untitled comedy pilot starring Sarah Silverman. Written by Secret Diary of a Call Girl creator Lucy Prebble, the project takes as a comedic look at a pathologically honest woman having a modern midlife crisis. Silverman will also serve as executive producer… HBO also just announced that it will no longer release overnight series ratings. Is this a smart decision? Vote in our poll.

COMING UP

NBC’s Caught on Camera with Nick Cannon debuts Friday, December 19 at 8p. The series gives viewers a look at everything from extreme rescues and white-knuckle car chases to crashes and viral sensations; all footage is shot on cell phones, dash cams, security cameras, news crews and camcorders.

Brain Games‘ hidden cameras capture results of interactive experiments and give viewers real-world takeaways on everything from memory to money to use in their everyday lives. National Geographic Channel series premieres Monday, January 19 at 9p with back-to-back new episodes.

Hallmark Channel original series Good Witch makes its two-hour premiere Saturday, February 28 at 8p. Based on the net’s original movie franchise of the same title, the show stars Catherine Bell (Army Wives, JAG) and Bailee Madison (Northpole, The Fosters) as a magical mother/daughter duo and James Denton (Desperate Housewives) as their next-door neighbor.

Alfonso Ribeiro, remembered as Carlton Banks on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, is headed to the Cooking Channel. He’ll explore the secrets behind classic American treats from caramel apples to honey barbecued potato chips in Unwrapped 2.0, premiering Monday, February 2 at 10p.

The bets are higher, the smack talk is louder, and the races are faster, when Street Outlaws returns Monday, December 29 at 9p on Discovery. This season, the 405 members face their toughest challengers yet, putting their status as the “fastest racers in the country” on the line.

Sportsman Channel’s Amazing America with Sarah Palin premieres Thursday, January 15 at 9p. This season, the show visits the Warrior Games in Colorado Springs and will also look at “Operation Home,” a program that builds houses for veterans, with former Army infantryman and Dancing with the Stars winner JR Martinez. Finally, rocker and conservative activist Ted Nugent is set to appear on the Thursday, January 29 episode.

Get ready for another season of tough love. Steve Austin’s Broken Skull Challenge debuts Sunday, January 4 at 8p. Each week, men and women from across the country battle it out in physically and mentally grueling challenges until only one is left standing. That person earns the chance to win $10,000 by beating the new and improved Skullbuster, a harrowing obstacle course designed by Austin himself. Fans can catch up on the show’s first season with a 10-hour marathon airing Wednesday, December 31 beginning at 12p on CMT.

RETURNING SERIES

Real Girl’s Kitchen has been renewed for a second season on Cooking Channel. The show, based on Haylie Duff’s blog and cookbook of the same name, is already back in production. No premiere date has been set yet.

TV One has greenlit freshman reality series Hollywood Divas for second season. “The strong social media and viewer response to Hollywood Divas made renewing this insider’s look at Black Hollywood a no-brainer,” said D’Angela Proctor, senior vice president of programming and production for TV One.

DISTRIBUTION AND CARRIAGE

Alfred Haber Television, Inc. has acquired exclusive international rights to You Can’t Lick Your Elbow, the new show from Authentic Entertainment (Ace Of Cakes, Toddlers & Tiaras). The 6-episode, 30 minute series is scheduled to air on the National Geographic Channel in the U.S. beginning the first quarter of 2015.

CASTING

Annie Wersching (24) has snagged a recurring role in Season Six of The Vampire Diaries, reports TVLine.  She’ll play Lily.

Syfy space drama Dark Matter has cast its lead actors: Broadway’s Les Miserables star Melissa O’Neil, Marc Bendavid (Bitten), Anthony Lemke (White House Down), Alex Mallari Jr. (Robocop), Jodelle Ferland (Twilight), Roger Cross (The Strain) and Zoie Palmer (Lost Girl). The series centers on the crew of a spaceship with no memories of who they are or how they got on board.

Manu Bennett (Arrow) is joining the cast of Shannara, the MTV supernatural drama based on the best selling novels by Terry Brooks. He’ll play Allanon, a druid.

BRANDS AND ADVERTISING

SPIKE TV and Ace Hardware have partnered for the network’s new furniture design competition show, Framework. The series showcases emerging designers as they compete for a $100,000 cash prize and the opportunity to launch their wares nationally. The winner will also receive $20,000 in gift cards from Ace Hardware. A key component of the series will be the Ace Supply Station, a large hub in the Framework workshop that provides contestants with the tools and products needed to meet their challenges. Series premieres Tuesday, January 6 at 10p.

Sony Pictures Television (SPT) Advertising Sales and Jewish Life Television (JLTV) have signed a national representation agreement for commercial advertising sales for the 24-7 Jewish-themed satellite/cable delivered television network. SPT Ad Sales will sell time within JLTV’s programming to national advertising agencies and their clients. JLTV is distributed to over 40 million television homes on digital basic cable television tiers throughout the US, Canada and Puerto Rico.

INTERNATIONAL HAPPENINGS

Viacom International Media Networks is expanding its entertainment networks on pay TV operator OSN in the Middle East and North Africa. OSN will receive three new 24-hour channels: Nickelodeon HD, Nick Jr. and MTV Live HD. The channels will launch on Monday, January 5.

USA Network will finish the year as the most watched ad-supported cable entertainment network for an unprecedented 9th consecutive year. Fueled by powerhouse WWE Monday Night Raw, USA’s winning streak continued with 2.14MM total viewers P2+, 7% higher than the closest competitive cable entertainment network.

In under five years’ time, since flipping over from Fine Living in mid-2010, Cooking Channel has seen a ratings increase of 17% among A25-54 (29% among W25-54). Offerings like Mo Rocca’s My Grandmother’s Ravioli, Debi Mazar & husband Gabriele Corcos’ Extra Virgin, Haylie Duff’s Real Girl’s Kitchen and Rev Run’s all-family docu-series, Rev Run’s Sunday Suppers, as well as Food Network classic series Cupcake Wars, Iron Chef America and Good Eats have buoyed the network impressions growth +18% among A25-54 (+22% for W25-54); that is a 5% increase in total day (W25-54) from YAGO and +110% from 2009, Fine Living’s last full calendar year.

Wednesday A18-49 Analysis: CBS led for the most A18-49 viewers Wednesday with 2.1/7, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen. At 8p CBS’ Survivor took the top spot with 2.3/8, followed by ABC’s The Middle and The Goldbergs combining with 1.3/6. CBS’ Survivor held onto the lead at 9p with 2.5/8. Tied for second were NBC’s Sing Off and ABC’s Modern Family and Blackish combo with 1.5/5. CBS’ Survivor Reunion kept the network at #1 at 10p with 1.8/6. NBC’s Sing Off trailed with 1.2/4.
