IN THE NEWS

The Walking Dead is set to invade Latino households. NBC Universo premieres the Spanish-language debut of the series Wednesday, January 20 at 10p. "Opening up the world of The Walking Dead to new audiences, who will now be able to immerse themselves in the drama and suspense of the series, is incredibly exciting,” said series creator Robert Kirkman.

ABC has made the Season 2 premiere of American Crime available for free on iTunes, three weeks ahead of its January 6 debut. The show’s sophomore season explores issues of sexual orientation and socioeconomic disparity.

Fashion Police has a new co-host. Margaret Cho is joining the E! series when it returns in 2016. Cho has previously appeared as a celebrity guest on the fashion-focused talker. Her addition follows the talent shuffle  namely, Kathy Griffin and Kelly Osbourne‘s exits – that occurred after Joan Rivers‘ death in 2014. The new season bows on Monday, January 11 at 8p with a full report on The 2016 Golden Globe Awards.

In more E! News, Live From The Red Carpet returns to cover the 2016 award season, beginning with the Golden Globes. Ryan Seacrest and Giuliana Rancic host the red carpet festivities on Sunday, January 10 at 6p.

Destination America is ringing out 2015 and ringing in 2016 with four spooky series and the resurrection of a cult classic. The net kicks things off with the return of Ghostly Encounters on Monday, December 28 at 9p, followed by the network debut of Most Haunted, resurrected on American television screens for the first time in seven years, at 10p. Paranormal Survivor‘s second season bows Friday, January 1 with back-to-back episodes at 9p and 10p, while season 8 of A Haunting bows Sunday, January 3 at 10p.

Jason Derulo will perform live at People’s Choice Awards 2016 on Wednesday, January 6 at 9p on CBS. He joins previously announced performer Shawn Mendes and host Jane Lynch. “Jason is such an all-around incredible performer and triple threat in the industry,” said EP (and new MGM TV pres) Mark Burnett. “He will bring the perfect energy to our show.”

After its debut ratings success, NBC is re-airing Dolly Parton’s Coat of Many Colors on Friday, December 25 at 9p. The special, based on the true story of Parton’s upbringing, stars Jennifer Nettles, Ricky Schroder, Gerald McRaney and Alyvia Alyn Lind.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

HBO has greenlit American Lion, a six-hour miniseries starring Oscar winner Sean Penn as President Andrew Jackson. The project is based on the biography “American Lion: Andrew Jackson in the White House,” by John Meacham, with additional source material coming from Robert V. Remini’s biography of Jackson. The project marks Penn’s first major TV role.

TV Land has ordered pilot Throwing Shade. The show is based on the Funny or Die podcast of the same name, hosted by Erin Gibson and Bryan Safi. The pair is credited as creators; they will also Executive Produce and star.

COMING UP

Science Channel will air every episode of Mythbusters in chronological order beginning Wednesday, December 23 at 12a and ending Sunday, January 3 at 8p. The holiday marathon starts with “Jet Assisted Chevy” and concludes with “Star Wars: Revenge of the Myth.”

HDNET Movies rings in 2016 with a monster lineup  literally. A “Creature Features” marathon, including premieres of Godzilla and Alien, airs Friday, January 1 at 3:30p. Other January highlights: Kevin Spacey in The Usual Suspects, Denzel Washington in Inside Man, and a Jack Nicholson double feature: Anger Management and As Good as it Gets.

NEW SERIES

Maggie Gyllenhaal is teaming with Participant Media to narrate Truth And Power, a 10-part investigative docuseries focusing on what happens when private institutions and governments abuse their authority. Series premieres Friday, January 22, and is part of the net’s 2016 programming slate, which includes a second season of Secret Lives Of Americans and a third season of Human Resources. In addition, Pivot has four unscripted projects in development. Scripted development will be announced in early 2016.

Hulu original miniseries 11.22.63 debuts Presidents Day, Monday, February 15. Based on the Stephen King novel, it follows high school English teacher Jake Epping (James Franco) as he travels back in time to prevent the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

NBC has announced a premiere date for You, Me and the Apocalypse, a comedic drama series about the last days of mankind. The U.K. import, starring Rob Lowe, Jenna Fischer and Megan Mullally, bows Thursday, January 28 at 8p.

The debut of Netflix series Fuller House has been set. The 13-episode first season will hit the streaming service on Friday, February 26. Candace Cameron Bure will serve as the lead, reprising the role of D.J.

Animal Planet follows the people behind The Alaska Distillery in Alaska Proof, bowingwith back-to-back episodes on Thursday, January 14 at 9p. The team goes to the most remote pockets of The Last Frontier State to bring a little bit of Alaska into every bottle.

Fusion is bringing the Real Future to TV. The eight-part documentary, based on the digital series launched on Fusion.net, ventures into the new technological universe. Hosted by Fusion editor-in-chief Alexis Madrigal and reported by the net’s Silicon Valley Team, it premieres Monday, January 11 at 10p.

RETURNING SERIES

History’s Vikings returns for a fourth season on Thursday, February 18 at 10p. The network has already added four episodes to its initial series order, bring the total to 20 episodes.

Bravo Media puts a ring on it with the 90-minute premiere of Newlyweds: The First Year on Sunday, January 3 at 9p. Season 3 of the docuseries explores the travails of four new couples during their first year of marriage.

Season 2 of Dinner at Tiffani’s premieres Wednesday, February 3 at 8p on Cooking Channel. Tiffani Thiessen showcases her culinary talents and entertaining skills, throwing get-togethers for family, friends and former castmates.

Portlandia returns to IFC on Thursday, January 21 at 10p. The series’ 10-episode, sixth season continues to explore the eccentric misfits its audience has come to know and love.

The final 10 episodes of The Garden’s Defining Moments, celebrating some of the greatest episodes in Madison Square Garden’s 135-year history, returns Wednesday, December 23 on MSG Network. Longtime Garden fan Ben Stiller will narrate.

SYNDICATION

Outdoor Channel has acquired cable syndication rights for the first six seasons of Duck Dynasty, beginning January 18 at 9p. Said Jim Liberatore, CEO and President of Outdoor Sportsman Group Networks, “We know fans of Duck Dynasty will flock to Outdoor Channel to relive the fun that started America’s love of the Robertson family.”

CASTING

Saturday Night Live alum Maya Rudolph has nabbed a recurring stint on Fox comedy The Grinder. The series returns with new episodes on Tuesday, January 5. Rudolph’s character surfaces in February.

GLOBAL GOINGS-ON

Banijay International has secured rights to Billy Connolly’s Tracks Across America by 7 Wonder. The travelogue takes viewers on an epic journey with the comedian in the company of three things he loves dearly  trains, America and his banjo. Debuts 2016 on ITV.

RATINGS

Through 14 weeks of the 2015 NFL regular-season, The NFL on CBS is averaging 19.3 million viewers (Persons 2+), up 2 percent from last year’s 18.9 million viewers. It marks the highest number of average viewers through 14 weeks of the season for the AFC television package in 29 years. Pre-game studio show, The NFL Today, is averaging 4.0million viewers, up 5 percent vs. 3.8 million in 2014.

Being Mary Jane‘s Season 3 finale on BET garnered nearly 1.7 million total viewers on Tuesday, December 15. The premiere telecast (10-11p) drew 860,000 viewers in the A18-49 demo making it Tuesday’s #1 cable drama series among both A18-49 and Women 18-49 for this season. It is also the #1 scripted cable series among Black viewers 18-49 for three consecutive seasons.

CBS‘ The Young and the Restless marks 1,405 consecutive weekly wins  a total of 27 years  as daytime’s top drama, according to Nielsen live plus same day ratings for the week ending December 11. For the week, the show averaged 4.79 million viewers (up 1 percent from last week), 1.7/11 in Women 25-54 and 1.2/09 in Women 18-49 (up 9percent). The show began its winning streak the week of December 26, 1988.

Food Network wraps up 2015 with gains among Millennials (A25-34), up 5 percent in ratings and +2 percent in impressions vs. year-ago. Cooking Channel finishes 2015 notching its best year ever, including highest-rated, most-watched and youngest. The network saw gains across multiple day parts and demos, including Millennials (A25-34) with double-digit increases in ratings and impressions up 27 percent and 31 percent respectively, and A25-54, up 14 percent and 18 percent respectively vs. year-ago.

At 8p, CBS’ Survivor topped with 2.2/8, followed by ABC’s The Middle and The Goldbergs, which combined for 1.3/5. CBS’ Survivor continued the lead at 9p with 2.3/8. ABC’s Modern Family and blackish combined with 1.3/5 for the #2 spot. CBS’ Survivor Reunion finished the night on top at 10p with 1.7/6. Telemundo’s Senora Acero followed with 1.1/4.

A+E Networks has named Jim Hoffman as Executive Vice President, Program Partnerships and Strategic Initiatives. Hoffman was Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing for NBC Entertainment.

Scripps Networks Interactive has promoted two veteran programming executives. John Feld, formerly Vice President of Programming for HGTV, DIY Network and Great American Country, has been elevated to Senior Vice President of Programming and Production for the networks.  Steven Lerner, who has served as Senior Vice President of Programming for HGTV, DIY Network and Great American Country, has been elevated to Senior Vice President of Programming and Production.
