Good morning. It’s Friday December 16, 2016 and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

We have a new linear sports network. The IOC, the United States Olympic Committee and NBCUniversal are partnering to launch an Olympic Channel content and distribution partnership in the US that will see a new network under the “Olympic Channel: Home of Team USA” brand. The channel will launch in the second half of 2017 with the new platform complementing the digital Olympic Channel, which launched earlier this year. The partnership also brings additional coverage of Olympic sports programs that will appear exclusively on other NBCU platforms starting with this weekend’s Team USA Winter Champions Series and see collaboration to produce and distribute Olympic sports and Olympic-themed programming on a year-round basis.

“Through this exciting new partnership with the USOC and NBCUniversal, we will ensure that U.S. audiences are more closely connected with the Olympic Movement through a more personalized experience,” said Mark Parkman, general manager of the Olympic Channel. “The evolution of the Olympic Channel in the United States is a significant milestone as we expand our distribution options across the globe in conjunction with our broadcast and National Olympic Committee partners. Placing a spotlight on Olympic sports outside of the Games themselves will ultimately bring them more deserved attention and help them grow.”

Thanks for the memories Craig Sager! RIP to Sager, who passed away yesterday at the age of 65 after battling acute myeloid leukemia. Sager worked for Turner for more than 30 years, among his other roles, and was first diagnosed with the disease in 2014. Turner President David Levy issued the following statement regarding his passing: “Craig Sager was a beloved member of the Turner family for more than three decades and he has been a true inspiration to all of us. There will never be another Craig Sager.  His incredible talent, tireless work ethic and commitment to his craft took him all over the world covering sports.”

Wednesday’s deal between the NBA and the National Basketball Players Association for a new seven-year collective bargaining agreement is set to run through the 2023-24 season  with a mutual opt-out available in 2022. While there will be no change in the basketball-related income split of 50-50, changes in the agreement include incentives for players to re-sign with the own teams with designated key veteran players able to sign five-year extensions with a year left on their current. The NBA will also raise rookie, veteran minimum and mid-level exception salaries by 50% to up the average salary of an NBA player to around $8.5 million, according to reports. The new CBA will also launch a program designed to prevent domestic violence, child abuse and sexual assault that will include counseling and treatment for players and families.

MLS Commissioner Don Garber announced that its next round of expansion teams will be unveiled in the second or third quarter of 2017. The additions of teams 25 and 26 will face an expansion fee of $150 million each and begin MLS play by 2020. Teams 27 and 28 will be announced at a later date. “There is tremendous interest in professional soccer across the United States and Canada,” Commissioner Garber said. “Since announcing plans to expand to 28 clubs late last year, many potential ownership groups have contacted us, and numerous public officials have stated their desire to bring an MLS expansion team to their city. We look forward to reviewing expansion applications in the coming months and conducting formal meetings in 2017 with possible team owners.”

ESPN has renewed its agreement with MMA analyst Brett Okamoto. He will continue his role as a breaking news reporter, feature writer and analyst, as well as host of 5ive Rounds. “Brett is one of the most respected journalists in the industry,” said Chad Millman, vice president and editorial director of U.S. digital content at ESPN. “From fight nights to breaking news to features, he provides the kind of access and insight across all of our platforms that MMA fans look for. We look forward to his continued contributions.”

Feld Entertainment unveiled plans for the upcoming 2017 Monster Energy AMA Supercross season that will now include an expanded FOX broadcast partnership that will allow fans to watch the first race from Angel Stadium in Anaheim on Jan. 7 on FOX Deportes, with other races set to run on FS1 and FS2, while FOX stations will showcase races in Indianapolis (3/18), Salt Lake City (4/22) and East Rutherford, N.J. (4/29). In addition, Monster Energy Supercross will provide the action, for the first time, via the pay-per-view live stream with a season pass available for $99.99.

The NFL is targeting week 16 to play with its ad breaks, according to SBJ. The league will experiment with its ad formats, changing the number of ads in a given break as well as the overall amount of ad breaks during a given game.

Speaking of the NFL, USA Today reports that GoDaddy is returning to the Super Bowl after sitting out last year’s game. The domain name seller joins other brands that include Snickers and Skittles, Avocados from Mexico, WeatherTech, Wix and Anheuser-Busch InBev.

The NHL announced that Sonnet, Canada’s first fully online home and auto insurance experience, inked a multi-year agreement with the league to become the official Canadian home and auto insurance partner of the NHL. Sonnet will reach and engage fans across Canada at signature League events, including various NHL Centennial celebrations throughout 2017, starting with the Scotiabank NHL Centennial Classic outdoor game in Toronto on January 1, where it will host the Sonnet MVP Lounge.

The NHL also announced that Bryan Adams, Arkells and Cold Creek County will provide the musical entertainment for the 2017 Scotiabank NHL Centennial Classic on Jan. 1. Adams will perform during the first intermission of the Red Wings and Maple Leafs game, while Cold Creek Country will perform during the second. Prior to fans filing into Exhibition Stadium on New Year’s Day, Arkells will perform at The PreGame Concert presented by SiriusXM.

The Hershey Company inked a three-year partnership with the US Ski and Snowboard Association leading up to the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games and beyond to serve as an official sponsor and the confectionery partner of the national governing body. The Hershey Company and its iconic brands will activate through special events, on-site activations, social media support and a digital content series. As an official partner, the company will have presence at key events including the Toyota U.S. Grand Prix, Visa Freestyle International, Toyota U.S. Revolution Tour, and Junior Nationals, and be led by Icebreakers – a leading mint and gum brand.

Tiger Woods will now tee off with Bridgestone to play. Bridgestone Golf said Thursday that it locked in Woods to a multi-year agreement in which he will play and promote the golf ball.

National Ugly Christmas Sweater Day today sees Rob Gronkowski and Richard Sherman team up with Oberto Beef Jerky to launch the #ObertoUglySweater sweepstakes to find the best ugly sweater. The contest is timed to the release of Oberto’s new ugly sweater themed digital comedy short featuring the two NFL players.

DIGITAL & STREAMING

WWE Network will carry the first-ever WWE United Kingdom Champion live through a special, two-night tournament on Jan. 14-15 at 8p GMT. “Our passionate U.K. fans deserve to have their own Champion,” said WWE Executive Vice President of Talent, Live Events & Creative, Paul “Triple H” Levesque. “The tournament is the next step in our ongoing strategy to create localized content for our global WWE Network, develop another brand that engages our passionate fans, and add a new dimension to our on-going storylines.”

SportsGuru is partnering with Anthem Sports & Entertainment to launch fan-created videos from SportsGuru across Anthem’s Fantasy Sports Network (FNTSY) and Fight Network video properties. Featured on its daily show Game Time Decisions, the “Who Ruined Your Sunday?” SportGuru segment highlights several viewer-created videos on air and across FNTSY’s digital properties. Whenever a fan records a video rant on SportsGuru with #WhoRuinedYourSunday in the title, the video is instantly added to a feed that is easily accessed by FNTSY’s producers and editors for inclusion on live shows.

ESPORTS

Skillz announced that the mobile esports company has now hosted more than 100 million tournament since its founding in 2012. Overall, the company now hosts over 500,000 tournaments every day with each tournament carrying the capacity to accommodate over 50,000 players. "When people look back at 2016, they will see that it was a breakthrough year for esports," said Andrew Paradise, CEO and founder of Skillz. "We have a diverse group of players competing in tournaments on our platform, including a user base that’s 49 percent female. Reaching the milestone of 100 million tournaments proves what we’ve always known: mobile eSports can be enjoyed by anyone."

Millennial Esports Corp. inked a partnership with 343 Industries, Xbox and Microsoft for the Halo World Championship. Beginning in January 2017, Millennial Esports will host a slate of open online qualifier tournaments on its competitive gaming platform in addition to a North American Qualifier LAN event at the Millennial Esports Arena at Neonopolis in downtown Las Vegas. The LAN event will see a $50,000 prize pool up for grabs and take place from March 3-5.
