A+E Networks is eyeing its FYI network in its strategic investment in cooking brand Panna, which features premium video from top chefs and recipe-filled apps. The subscription-based Panna app has been downloaded more than 1 million times and features video recipes from dozens of James Beard award-winning, Michelin-starred chefs. FYI and Panna kicked off their partnership with “12 Hacks of Christmas,” a series of 45-second interstitials airing each night in FYI’s primetime block through December 24.

The live televised musical is getting a religious twist courtesy of Fox. The network will air two-hour The Passion livefrom New Orleans on Palm Sunday, March 20 at 8p, hosted by Tyler Perry. New Orleans native Perry will narrate the story of the final hours of the life of Jesus Christ, set in modern times and augmented by a cast of entertainers performing popular songs arranged by Adam Anders (Glee).

Because we just can’t get enough. Showtime gave the green light to The Circus: Inside the Greatest Political Show on Earth, a real-time political docu series produced in cooperation with Bloomberg Politics and featuring Bloomberg Politics’ Mark Halperin and John Heilemann, and campaign strategist Mark McKinnon. Series will follow stories and key characters from the campaigns in weekly half-hour shows between January and November 2016. Left/Right is producing; Halperin, Heilemann, McKinnon, Banks Tarver and Ken Druckerman are exec producers.

Animated comedy Bunsen is a Beast!, from veteran animator Butch Hartman, got a 20-episode order from Nickelodeon. Series follows the adventures of Bunsen, the first beast to attend a human-grade school. The network also picked up seven additional episodes for season 10 of Emmy-winning The Fairly OddParents, which will return Friday, January 15, at 7:30p.

Former BBC Worldwide head of talent William Miller and Ruth Wrigley, All3Media’s former group head of entertainment and formats, launched a new indie production company, Raconteur Associates. They’ll focus on non-scripted programming and formats for UK and international broadcasters.

Z Living, a health and lifestyle network, inked a development deal with 3 Ball Entertainment (Bar Rescue, Extreme Weight Loss). The partnership launches with development of three series: The Big Fat Truth, Finding Fido and Homegrown Wedding.

COMING UP

One year after the terrorist attack at French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo that left 11 dead, Smithsonian Channel will air Paris Terror Attack: Charlie Hebdo on Monday, January 4, at 8p. Special follows, hour by hour, the event and includes testimony from the police and military commanders leading the operation to capture the suspects combined with chilling eyewitness video.

BET Networks will present the ninth annual BET Honors special, hosted for the first time by Arsenio Hall, on February 23. The event this year honors five distinguished African Americans: Empire creator Lee Daniels; Mellody Hobson, president of Ariel Investments and chairman of the Board of Directors for Dreamworks Animation; Eric H. Holder Jr., the first African American US Attorney General; and Grammy-winning singer Patti Labelle; and L.A. Reid, chairman/CEO of Epic Records.

Luke Bryan and Dierks Bentley are set to co-host the 51st Academy of Country Music Awards, broadcast live from Vegas on Sunday, April 3 at 8p on CBS. This will be Bryan’s fourth consecutive turn hosting the awards and Bentley’s first.

The second season of Spike TV’s Lip Sync Battle kicks off Thursday, January 7 at 10p with a one-hour ep featuring Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan-Tatum.

NEW SERIES

No matter what the occasion, Giada De Laurentiis shows viewers how to be host with the most in new series Giada Entertains, premiering Sunday, January 3, 11a on Food Network. The six-ep series features themes from cocktail parties and game day food to celebrations for the whole family.

Fast times. A fledgling street racing team is in the spotlight in new Discovery Channel series Street Outlaws: New Orleans, which premieres Monday, February 22, at 9p. The spinoff to Street Outlaws, part of Discovery’s Motor Mondays, is produced by Pilgrim Studios; Craig Piligian and Sam Korkis are exec producers. For Discovery, Craig Coffman is exec producer.

American Heroes Channel digs deep into epic family vendettas and more in Blood Feuds, premiering Wednesday, January 6 at 10p. Among the six iconic rivalries brought to life via dramatic recreations and interviews are Bill the Butcher vs. John Morrisey, Hatfields vs. McCoys and Soapy Smith vs. Frank Reid.

The soon to be renamed Freeform network (now ABC Family) will bow Recovery Road, featuring stories of people trying to overcome addiction, on Monday, January 25 at 9p. The premiere ep, titled “Blackout,” was written by Bert V. Royal and Karen DiConcetto and directed by Lawrence Trilling.

HOLIDAY HAPPENINGS

getTV will present 30 hours of classic holiday specials hosted by the likes of Judy Garland, Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye, beginning Christmas eve  at noon through Christmas at 6p.

Alessia Cara, DNCE, Nick Jonas, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, OMI, Pentatonix and Nathan Sykes are confirmed as the final performers on ABC’s telecast of Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest 2016. The full evening will include more than 38 performances and five-and-a-half hours of music.

ADVERTISING AND BRANDS

Online payment company PayPal Holdings has stepped on the field to advertise for the first time during the Super Bowl. The company said it purchased a 45-second spot to air during the first quarter. CBS will broadcast the big game on Sunday, February 7, 2016.

CARRIAGE & DISTRIBUTION

While still in talks with affiliate group Tribune, The CW secured additional TV stations for the network’s next season. Gray Television extended its multiyear affiliation agreements, covering 23 markets including 19 existing CW affiliates.

GLOBAL GOINGS-ON

Multimedia entertainment studio Electus, in conjunction with CBS Television Studios and RCTV, will sell and license the format to the series Jane The Virgin. Electus International brought the series to market earlier this year, and will handle all format sales with the exception of Latin America, which will be handled by RCTV.

First deal is a straight to series order on Kanal D in Turkey.

RATINGS

Adele Live in New York City struck all the right chords for NBC on Monday night, scoring a 10-year high note for the network. The British singer’s performance special drew a 3.0/10 rating, with 11.2 million viewers tuning in to the 10p concert, exec produced by Lorne Michaels. It was the network’s most-watched concert special since 2003, when 16.56 million tuned in for the Cher Farewell Tour.

The week ending December 6, Extra (1.6) was up 23 percent from the week before to match its season high and rank as the biggest gainer among the top syndicated entertainment mags. Entertainment Tonight (3.1) had a 15 percent boost, The Insider grew 9 percent (to 1.2) and Access Hollywood (1.8) and TMZ (1.7) were up 6 percent each.

Among the newbies, Crime Watch Daily (.9, up 13 percent) was number one for the 12th week in a row, while FABLife and Crazy Talk were steady with .8 and .6, respectively.

Hallmark Channel is decking the halls. Since the launch of this year’s Countdown to Christmas, the network is the top-rated and most-watched net among households in weekend primetime and total day. On Saturday, December 12, the premiere of original movie On the Twelfth Day of Christmas averaged a 3.1 household rating and 3.5 million total viewers, while the winter premiere of Family for Christmas on Sunday drew a 2.8 household rating and 3.4 million total viewers.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Disney has tapped Courtney Holt to replace Ynon Kreiz as head the company’s Maker Studios, effective January 11. Holt has been chief strategy officer and will have the new title of EVP/head of Maker.

Litton Entertainment appointed Emmy winner David Doyle, who’s partnered with the company for projects, to VP, production & non-fiction development. Doyle was head of development and production at Animal Planet. Additionally, Mark Rains has been named executive in charge of production; he previously was at BBC Worldwide Productions; and Ilana Gordon has been named producer, branded content. She most recently was supervising producer on Project Greenlight.

Univision Communications promoted Jorge Dominguez to SVP of art and design. Dominguez has been part of UCI for nearly 30 years, most recently serving as VP of art design.

Marketing technology company Magnetic is expanding its ranks. Walt Cheruk, previously of [X+1] and Carat, joins as SVP of agency sales & development. Paul McCarthy, formerly of LivePerson, joins as VP of people operations. And Lauren Dubick, most recently at the firm Kaplan Fox & Kilsheimer, is new general counsel/chief privacy officer.

Lockwood Broadcast Group appointed Neal Davis as GM of KAKE-TV in Wichita, KS. He most recently was GM at Lockwood stations WBXX and WKNX in Knoxville, TV.

CONGRATS

The son of Bounce TV president Ryan Glover, Ryan Glover II, junior Quarterback for Woodward Academy in Atlanta, was named the High School 5-AAAA Player of the Year in the state of Georgia as voted by the league’s coaches. “I am so very proud of Ryan Jr. and thrilled of his accomplishments in the classroom and on the gridiron.  It’s great that he still has another year to continue his success in high school football at Woodward Academy!,” says the senior Glover. “With Bounce TV having its best year ever in ratings and viewership, it has been an amazing 2015 for me and our family.”
