12.15.16

Good morning. It’s Thursday December 15, 2016 and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

New research from FOX Sports, titled The 5th Network: Regional Sports Network Passion Index, a Nielsen Media Analytics Primary Research study, discovered that sports fans rate RSNs as their most essential non-broadcast channels. The data looked at more than 1,500 pay TV subscribers around the country who identify as sports fans, and found that on average respondents rate their RSNs as the fifth most essential channel in their entire television packages, ranking only behind the four broadcast networks. More details can be found

here.

“We have long known that our RSNs are akin to the fifth broadcast network in their markets in terms of ratings, and Nielsen’s research confirms the remarkable importance of these networks to viewers,” said FOX Sports Regional Networks President Jeff Krolik. “Local sports are tribal, and RSNs inspire the same loyalty and connection as the hometown teams they bring to fans.”

ON THE AIR

The NBA and its players locked in a tentative deal on a new collective bargaining agreement, pending ratification. More details will be in tomorrow’s issue but the two sides announced that they have extended the mutual deadline on a deal to Jan. 13 so both parties have ample opportunity to review the terms of the agreement and ratify the proposal.

As 2016 comes to a close, NBCSN reports that – for the third consecutive year  the network is on pace for its best-ever year, according to live plus same day data from Nielsen. Bolstered by 330 hours of live Rio Olympics coverage, the channel is averaging 171,000 viewers through the first 50 weeks of the year and will finish 2016 with its best-ever Total Day viewership, besting last year’s mark by 16%. In addition, NBCSN is again on pace for its best-ever year in primetime, averaging 390,000 viewers  up 9% from last year’s record.

MLB and its players have ratified the sport’s new collective bargaining agreement, according to USA Today. The five-year deal was agreed to Nov. 30, about 3½ hours before the expiration of the previous contract and lifts the luxury tax thresholds, among other changes.

ESPN2 will simulcast ESPN Deportes’ Spanish-language coverage of the NBA Christmas Day Game between the Clippers/Lakers. The move was made in an effort to serve a broader Hispanic audience, with the game set to take place at 10:30p. The telecast will be led by ESPN Deportes’ Alvaro Martin who will call the action alongside analyst Carlos Morales.

More details on Saturday’s record MLS Cup audience numbers. Univision reports that its telecast of the match delivered double-digit year-over-year audience growth among A18-49 on UniMas, while the game notched 601K Total Viewers to mark the second largest audience all-time for a MLS Final on Univision Deportes. Numbers were up 19% year-to-year with P2+, and up 24% with A18-49.

Meanwhile, Univision also announced that UCI Live will present the inaugural Prospects Cup next December 2017, pitting 16 U12 soccer teams from around the world battling for the sport’s first youth world championship. Produced by UCI Live, the company’s new live event and experiential marketing unit, the tournament will be sanctioned by the United States Soccer Federation’s Development Academy, US Youth Soccer and US Club Soccer, while Univision Deportes will broadcast Prospects Cup as well as other U-12 events as part of its overall strategy to promote soccer among youth.

ESPN networks lined up their programming plans for SEC baseball games, with play set to begin on March 14. Overall, the company offers 98 conference games, with 75 slated to air on SEC Network. Opening night of conference play, Friday, March 17, SEC Network returns Bases Loaded coverage, featuring every SEC team in a live compilation of seven games:

NBC Sports Group serves up the inaugural Team USA Winter Champions Series on Saturday, with the tripleheader of Olympic winter sports events running on NBC and NBCSN. Coverage begins at 2:30p with men’s and women’s big air snowboarding from Copper Mountain. Todd Harris (play-by-play), Todd Richards (analyst), and Tina Dixon (reporter) will call the Big Air event. Leigh Diffey (play-by-play), Kate Hansen (analyst), and Lewis Johnson (reporter) will call women’s luge coverage. Gord Miller (play-by-play), AJ Mleczko (analyst), and Leila Rahimi (reporter) will call Team USA-Canada women’s hockey.
