RESEARCH

FOX Sports released the results of “The 5th Network: Regional Sports Network Passion Index,” a Nielsen Media Analytics Primary Research study that found sports fans rate regional sports networks (RSNs) as their most essential non-broadcast channels. The study looked at 1,500 pay TV subscribers around the country, who identify as sports fans, and found that on average respondents rate their RSNs as the fifth most essential channel in their entire television packages, ranking only behind the four broadcast networks. In certain geographical regions, sports fans ranked their RSNs as the most essential networks.

PwC US’s new survey findings indicate cord cutting is happening at a slower rate than predicted, with fewer pay TV subscribers seeing themselves cutting the cord in the future than they did last year. According to “Videoquake 4.0: Binge, Stream, Repeat  How Video is Changing Forever,” 84 percent of pay TV subscribers say they expect to subscribe to cable one year from now, compared to 70 percent in 2015 and 91percent in 2014. As for cord trimmers, 51 percent say they now pay more for video content than they did one year ago. According to PwC, the availability of more content in more formats may not be the death of traditional pay TV, but rather “the beginning of a world in which pay TV is merely one among many video services.”

Videology teamed with Advertiser Perceptions to survey 300 agency and brand marketers about their use of demo targeting. When asked which methods of targeting are regularly employed to reach consumers on digital video advertising campaigns, agency advertisers cited demo targeting 67 percent, while brand marketers cited demo targeting 55 percent. In addition, 67 percent of agency advertisers and 73 percent of brand marketers agreed that as more TV content is viewed on digital channels, demo targeting and delivery will remain a key metric for evaluating cross-screen campaigns over the next 3 to 5 years.

CASTING

Molly Ringwald has been nabbed to play Archie’s mother in The CW’s comic-inspired series, Riverdale. She’ll debut in season 1’s tenth episode. Series bows Thursday, January 26 at 9p.

FuboTV, the live streaming subscription TV service for soccer that began in 2015, is more than doubling its national channel line-up, following affiliate agreements with FOX Networks Group, NBCUniversal, A+E Networks, Crown Media Family Networks, Fuse Media, NBA TV and The Weather Channel. The new Fubo will launch in the coming weeks with upgraded back-end technology, new viewer features, and access to more than 70 channels  including national broadcast and cable networks, regional sports networks   and local broadcast stations owned-and-operated by these new partners.

Candace Payne, aka Chewbacca Mom, is heading to TLCme, TLC’s digital destination. TLCme kicks off the relationship with two digital series: 2 Truths & A Lie with Candace, debuting Monday, December 19, and Sing-a-long with Candace.
