Mark Burnett has been appointed president of MGM Television and Digital Group, after MGM struck a deal for the remaining 45 percent that Burnett, Roma Downey and Hearst hold in United Artists Media Group. Burnett will report to Gary Barber, MGM chairman and CEO. MGM acquired a 55 percent stake in the venture last year. “Demand for quality content is stronger than ever and the opportunities to grow our pipeline and develop projectsfrom the wealth of Intellectual Property in the MGM and United Artists libraries are enormous,” said Burnett. “There is no better time to be creating premium content for distribution across multiple platforms.” A previously announced streaming channel will continue to be controlled by Burnett, Downey, Hearst and MGM. Downey takes on the role of chief content officer, as well as president of faith and family unit LightWorks.
TiVo Research and RealityMine are partnering with NBCUniversal to provide single-sourced cross-platform measurement of the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. Using TiVo’s set top box data and RealityMine’s expertise in in digital and consumer behavior research, analysis of how viewers consumed content across devices will aim to help NBCU better understand viewer behavior. “TiVo Research is providing something that has never been available in multi-screen measurement,” Frank Foster, GM & SVP, TiVo Research, tells Cynopsis. “This partnership will help NBCU significantly improve the viewing experience of the Olympics on every single device.”
Apparently film success hasn’t soured Melissa McCarthy on the small screen. The Mike & Molly star tweeted Monday that she was “shocked and heartbroken” at the news that CBS was canceling the comedy, moving to Wednesdays on January 6 for the remainder of its sixth and final season. “I would have shot this show for 50 more years,” said McCarthy. “I’ll miss my 2nd family.”
Who’s the favorite of them all? Digital marketing tech company Amobee Brand Intelligence analyzed digital content engagement around the term “favorite show” to determine which program was tops with viewers in 2015. The winner was CBS’s The Good Wife, followed by AMC’s The Walking Dead, HBO’s Game of Thrones, and Netlix’s House of Cards and Orange Is the New Black.
TV personality Giselle Blondet has been tapped to host upcoming Telemundo reality show Gran Hermano (Big Brother), debuting Sunday, January 10 at 8p. Blondet hosted beauty pageant Neustra Belleza Latina for seven years.
Entertainment Tonight vets Leeza Gibbons and Mark Steines have been tapped to replace retiring Bob Eubanks and Stephanie Edwards as hosts of KTLA Channel 5’s broadcast of the Rose Bowl Parade, starting in 2017. Eubanks has been announcing the parade since 1979, Edwards since 1982.
The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in DirecTV’s favor in a California class-action suit over early termination fees. The court determined that DirecTV’s contract, which prohibits class-action suits in favor of arbitration, is valid.
A survey on brand preferences found that 33 percent of people thought Apple would do a better job of running the country than politicians. Twenty-eight percent of consumers would vote for Walt Disney, 18 percent named American Express, 11 percent went for Facebook and 10 percent chose Starbucks. The new Breakout Brands report from rbb Communications also noted that 57 percent of Americans are more likely to trust a company that consistently offers excellent service over one that offers excellent prices.
History’s Planet H, the brand extension created for kids ages 7-11, launched a new game: Porta-Pilots: Plunging Through Time. Available for free on iOS, Android and Amazon Fire platforms, the game takes kids on a time traveling journey in a machine disguised as…a Porta-Potty.

Man Finds Food got the green light for a sophomore season from Travel Channel, to air across the U.S. and Scripps Networks channels in over 100 countries and territories in summer 2016. Filming for the Sharp Entertainment production begins in South Africa next week.
Vertigo Entertainment is expanding its arrangement with Warner Bros. with a two-year overall deal at Warner Bros. Television for drama and comedy. Michael Connolly, founder of Mad Hatter Entertainment, will oversee small screen operations.
Amazon Prime is developing Highland, starring Margaret Cho as a woman fresh out of rehab who moves back in with family who run a pot dispensary. Dramedy is a co-productions between Amazon Studios and Tomorrow Studios.
HarperCollins and digital TV studio Insurrection Media are teaming to develop books for series on multiple platforms. First up: an adaptation of YA trilogy Mila 2.0.
COMING UP
Pivot acquired TV rights to two documentaries focusing on the refugee crisis. Salam Neighbor premieres Wednesday, January 20 at 7p, and This Is Exile: Diaries of Child Refugees debuts one week later in the time slot. The docs air during Pivot’s “Stand Up for Justice” month, starting January 18, Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Special Star Wars-themed episodes of Mythbusters air Wednesday, December 16 at 9p and 10p on Science Channel, following Raiders, Raptors and Rebels: Behind the Magic of ILM at 8p. Star Wars: The Force Awakens is officially, finally released on the big screen December 18.
As E!’s The Soup is served for the last time on Friday, December 18 at 10p, guests popping in include Nathan Fillion, Seth Green, Eric Idle, Haley Joel Osment, Adam Scott and more.

Lottery winners go house-hunting in My Lottery Dream Home, premiering Friday, January 8 at 11p on HGTV. “Every lottery winner featured in the series can’t believe they now have millions of dollars to spend on a home,” said host David Bromstad. “It’s an incredible feeling for me to show them properties they never dreamed they could afford.”
WGN America set the date for the premiere of Underground, focused on revolutionaries of the Underground Railroad. Escape thriller exec produced by John Legend launches Wednesday, March 9.

ABC soap Blood & Oil hit a series low .7/2 among A18-49 for its finale on Sunday, according to preliminary numbers. The winter finale of fellow freshman Quantico followed with 1.3/4, for its best rating since October 25.
Discovery’s Alaskan Bush People scored a 2.29 P25-54 rating with 4.66M total viewers P2+ on Wednesday, December 9 in L+3, the night’s most-watched cable telecast in P2+. The series earned season highs across M25-54, M18-49 and M18-34 and was up week-to-week across all 25-54s, 18-49s, and 18-34s.
The finale of Univision music competition La Banda reached 5.1 million total viewers 2+ for all or part of the three-hour broadcast on Sunday. The show averaged 2.7 million viewers, 1.1 million among A18-49 and 518,000 A18-34.
Fox Business News reports it is wrapping 2015 as the fastest-growing cable channel on TV, with its highest-rated year ever in Total Day, Business Day and Prime Time, in viewers and the news demo. All of the financial news net’s post-market programs recorded double digit growth across the board: After the Bell, Risk & Reward with Deirdre Bolton and Making Money with Charles Payne all had their highest rated year ever in both total viewers and the demo, and ratings stalwart Lou Dobbs Tonight ends 2015 up 47 percent in total viewers and 38 percent in the demo.
