IN THE NEWS

Mark Burnett has been appointed president of MGM Television and Digital Group, after MGM struck a deal for the remaining 45 percent that Burnett, Roma Downey and Hearst hold in United Artists Media Group. Burnett will report to Gary Barber, MGM chairman and CEO. MGM acquired a 55 percent stake in the venture last year. “Demand for quality content is stronger than ever and the opportunities to grow our pipeline and develop projectsfrom the wealth of Intellectual Property in the MGM and United Artists libraries are enormous,” said Burnett. “There is no better time to be creating premium content for distribution across multiple platforms.” A previously announced streaming channel will continue to be controlled by Burnett, Downey, Hearst and MGM. Downey takes on the role of chief content officer, as well as president of faith and family unit LightWorks.

TiVo Research and RealityMine are partnering with NBCUniversal to provide single-sourced cross-platform measurement of the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. Using TiVo’s set top box data and RealityMine’s expertise in in digital and consumer behavior research, analysis of how viewers consumed content across devices will aim to help NBCU better understand viewer behavior. “TiVo Research is providing something that has never been available in multi-screen measurement,” Frank Foster, GM & SVP, TiVo Research, tells Cynopsis. “This partnership will help NBCU significantly improve the viewing experience of the Olympics on every single device.”

Apparently film success hasn’t soured Melissa McCarthy on the small screen. The Mike & Molly star tweeted Monday that she was “shocked and heartbroken” at the news that CBS was canceling the comedy, moving to Wednesdays on January 6 for the remainder of its sixth and final season. “I would have shot this show for 50 more years,” said McCarthy. “I’ll miss my 2nd family.”

Who’s the favorite of them all? Digital marketing tech company Amobee Brand Intelligence analyzed digital content engagement around the term “favorite show” to determine which program was tops with viewers in 2015. The winner was CBS’s The Good Wife, followed by AMC’s The Walking Dead, HBO’s Game of Thrones, and Netlix’s House of Cards and Orange Is the New Black.

TV personality Giselle Blondet has been tapped to host upcoming Telemundo reality show Gran Hermano (Big Brother), debuting Sunday, January 10 at 8p. Blondet hosted beauty pageant Neustra Belleza Latina for seven years.

Entertainment Tonight vets Leeza Gibbons and Mark Steines have been tapped to replace retiring Bob Eubanks and Stephanie Edwards as hosts of KTLA Channel 5’s broadcast of the Rose Bowl Parade, starting in 2017. Eubanks has been announcing the parade since 1979, Edwards since 1982.

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in DirecTV’s favor in a California class-action suit over early termination fees. The court determined that DirecTV’s contract, which prohibits class-action suits in favor of arbitration, is valid.

A survey on brand preferences found that 33 percent of people thought Apple would do a better job of running the country than politicians. Twenty-eight percent of consumers would vote for Walt Disney, 18 percent named American Express, 11 percent went for Facebook and 10 percent chose Starbucks. The new Breakout Brands report from rbb Communications also noted that 57 percent of Americans are more likely to trust a company that consistently offers excellent service over one that offers excellent prices.

History’s Planet H, the brand extension created for kids ages 7-11, launched a new game: Porta-Pilots: Plunging Through Time. Available for free on iOS, Android and Amazon Fire platforms, the game takes kids on a time traveling journey in a machine disguised as…a Porta-Potty.
