IN THE NEWS

A lawyer for Gurney Productions founders Dierdre and Scott Gurney responded to a fraud and breach of contract lawsuit filed against them by majority owner ITV. “The claims against the Gurneys are completely baseless and fraught with contradictions, inconsistencies and outright falsehoods,” said Lavely & Singer’s Michael E. Weinstein on Monday. “My clients are considering all of their legal options and are preparing to respond accordingly.”

Fox News Sunday delivered 2.3 million viewers for a sit-down with President-elect Donald Trump on December 11, the second-best in its 20 years on the air. Number one was an episode about the capture of Saddam Hussein in 2003.

ABC just can’t get enough of its comedy series. The net tacked on an extra episode each to American Housewife, Speechless, Fresh Off the Boat, and The Middle on top of full-season 22-episode orders, and tacked on 2 more episodes of black-ish and The Goldbergs.

TV Land canceled Impastor after 2 seasons. The comedy averaged 360,000 viewers for its just concluded sophomore run.

Season 3 of Salem will be its last on WGN America. “We knew this would be the third and final season and were able to craft an exciting climax,” said series creators Brannon Braga and Adam Simon. The drama is averaging between 200,000 and 300,000 viewers in Live+SD.

Let the 2016 countdowns begin. The top 10 regularly scheduled primetime programs of the year, according to Nielsen, were:
The Big Bang Theory (CBS)
NCIS (CBS)
NBC Sunday Night Football (NBC)
The Walking Dead (AMC)
Bull (CBS)
NCIS: New Orleans (CBS)
Sunday Night NFL Pre-Kick (NBC)
Designated Survivor (ABC)
CBS+NFLN Thursday Night Football (CBS)
Blue Bloods (CBS)

Fox News correspondent Abby Huntsman will join Fox & Friends Weekend as co-host, starting Saturday. She joins Clayton Morris and a rotating male co-host. Huntsman replaces Anna Kooiman, who moved to Australia and now serves as a freelance correspondent.

Emmy Rossum, trying to renegotiate her deal for season 8 of Showtime’s Shameless to match the salary of William H. Macy, apparently has her co-star’s support. Asked by TMZ how he feels about Rossum’s dispute with Warner Bros. and equal pay for women, Macy said, “About f—-ing time, don’t you think?”

The Paley Center for Media’s 34th annual PaleyFest Los Angeles returns to the Dolby Theatre March 17-26, with a lineup that includes HBO’s Westworld, NBC’s This Is Us and FX anthology horror drama American Horror Story: Roanoke.

Call for Submissions: If you have special new programming or an event the weekend of December 16-18, please email Lynn@Cynopsis.com with details. Weekender comes out Thursday afternoons.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

TNT gave a series greenlight to Claws, starring Niecy Nash (The Soul Man) and exec produced by Rashida Jones, Will McCormack and showrunner Janine Sherman Barrois. The dark comedy follows the treacherous manicurists at a nail salon “where there is a lot more going on than silk wraps and pedicures.”

The Bastard landed a script commitment from Fox. The comedy, written and executive produced by Rob Rosell and David Hornsby, centers on a janitor who learns he’s the out-of-wedlock son of the wealthy founder of a hotel chain. 20th Television is the studio.

John Rogers (The Librarians) will write and exec produce Lionsgate TV’s adaptation of The Kingkiller Chronicles, with Lin-Manuel Miranda, book author Pat Rothfuss and producer Robert Lawrence.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

IFC’s Stan Against Evil will be back for a sophomore season. The horror comedy debuted to strong numbers Halloween week, and is one of the net’s most successful original series launches to date, with steady weekly audience growth across the season as well as total viewers and A18-49 more than doubling within 7 days of each new episode premiere.

Relative intervention is the focus of Outlaw In-Laws, debuting on RLTV Thursday, December 15 at 9p. Just in time for the holidays, viewers can watch a relationship expert get feuding families back on track. Or try to.

You’re invited to Dinner at Tiffani’s again starting Sunday, January 8 at 8p on Cooking Channel, as the Beverly Hills, 90210 alum entertains pals Matt Bomer and Tim Dekay. Supper is followed by the 8:30p season debut of Tia Mowry at Home, featuring Caribbean-inspired dishes.

WGN America’s Underground returns for season 2 on Wednesday, March 8 at 10p. Series exec producer John Legend will guest star as abolitionist Frederick Douglass.

Freeform’s The Fosters returns for its winter premiere on Tuesday, January 31 at 8p, followed by the winter bow of Switched at Birth at 9p.

TBS gave season 2 renewals for People of Earth and Search Party. Search launched with a season 1 binge over Thanksgiving week, drawing over 1.1 million viewers per episode across platforms. People has ranked as one of the year’s top 10 new cable comedies among A18-49, reaching 4.3 million viewers per episode across platforms. “Twelve months ago we set out to reimagine the TBS brand and its place in the TV landscape. To end 2016 with all six shows returning is humbling,” said Brett Weitz, EVP of original programming for TBS.

Designer Hilary Farr and real estate expert David Visentin are back for a new season of HGTV hit Love It or List It, premiering on Monday, January 2, at 9p. The show attracted over 12 million viewers its last go-round.

Season 5 of HBO’s Vice premieres Friday, February 24 at 11p. The newsmagazine’s season order was upped from 18 to 30.

MTV announced the global on-air premiere of Lady Gaga’s music video for “Million Reasons,” debuting following the video for the album’s lead single “Perfect Illusion” as a back-to-back storyline continuation across MTV channels worldwide, today at 3p.

NBC self-explanatory special Tony Bennett Celebrates 90: The Best Is Yet to Come will be hosted by Alec Baldwin and feature performances by Andrea Bocelli, Michael Buble, Bob Dylan, Lady Gaga, Billy Joel and Elton John, among others, on Tuesday, December 20 at 9p.

AWARDS UPDATES

Nomination announcements for the 23rd Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards will be streamed today on www.sagawards.org. Sophia Bush (One Tree Hill) and Common (Selma) will join SAG-AFTRA president Gabrielle Carteris for the name-reading event. Awards show will be simulcast on TNT and TBS on Sunday, January 29 at 8p.

The Screen Actors Guild Awards Holiday Auction is underway at http://www.sagawards.org/auction. Items up for grabs include tickets to the SAG Awards, VIP tickets to Full Frontal with Samantha Bee, The Tonight Show, Dancing With the Stars, premiere tickets to The Americans, and more.

ABC and HBO led with the most nominees for the 48th Annual NAACP Image Awards, with 23 and 14, respectively. Beyonce had the most individual nods (7), followed by her sister, Solange Knowles (5). Winners will be announced at a ceremony airing live on TV One Saturday, February 11 at 9p, hosted by Anthony Anderson (black-ish).

DIGITAL DOINGS

Marco Polo will not reach season 3 on Netflix. No hard feelings from producer The Weinstein Co., apparently. “Netflix has been incredible to give us the room to make a series with a cast true to every principle of diversity. It’s a bold network that allows you to do that and support us in the way that Netflix did,” said Harvey Weinstein.

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: Slingshot is live on ABC.com, ABC app, Marvel.com and ABC and Marvel’s YouTube channels. The six-part digital series, produced by Marvel Television and ABC Studios, delves into the backstory of Elena “Yo-Yo” Rodriguez.

Music Choice rolled out The New Music Choice, an enhanced version of its music service. Designed for IPTV set-top box television platforms, the streaming service allows users to seamlessly navigate to related video content or any Music Choice On Demand offerings within a single interface. MC says it’s the first time a programmer has offered the degree of audio/music content experience on the same platform.

BBC Worldwide and ITV announced a joint venture for ad-free SVOD service BritBox, a curated service of classic series and new hits, to launch 1Q17. AMC Networks, which has a joint venture with BBCW for BBC America, is investing in BritBox with a non-voting minority interest.

AT&T launched Taylor Swift NOW, promising an on-demand video experience curated by the pop star to give her fans a look at her career and life. Taylor Swift NOW is available to AT&T customers on all video platforms.

Gray Television is going over the top. Gray will use OTT video network Haystack TV to distribute local news content targeting a millennial audience, with local users seeing news stories based on their viewing habits. “Third-party researchers have named Gray as the television group reaching the highest number of ‘millennial’ consumers,” said Kevin Latek, Gray’s EVP. “It is therefore quite appropriate that Gray… becomes the first local broadcaster in each of our 50-plus television markets to distribute local news video content on Haystack TV’s new and innovative platform.”

A California Federal Judge granted Disney’s request for a preliminary injunction against VidAngel, pending trial. VidAngel, a TVOD service, edits out adult content; by selling DVD copies of films and then offering streaming versions of the edited films, VidAngel violates studios’ copyrights, ruled Judge Andre Birotte, Jr. “We will aggressively pursue an appeal and take this case to a higher level,” said Neal Harmon, CEO of the filtering service.

ADVERTISING

A 10 percent shift in spend from promotions to media will increase marketing ROI by 10-25 percent, according to a study from IRI and Turner. “We felt it was critical to remind advertisers of the risk that they take with trade promotion, which can not only harm the brand by training consumers to buy on a deal, but also sacrifice short-term and especially long-term ROI because of the strength of media and brand marketing,” said Howard Shimmel, chief research officer at Turner. “Building on this analysis, the ad capabilities that we’re establishing through Turner Ignite, from audience targeting to native advertising to social optimization, are even further enhancing the ROI that media can deliver.”

GOING GLOBAL

Fox reboot 24: Legacy, launching February 5, will have a day-and-date premiere on most Fox international channels. Drama focuses on the race to stop a devastating terrorist attack.
