IN THE NEWS

Veteran TV executive Jane Latman is on the rise at Discovery. She’s been promoted to EVP, development and research, for ID, Destination America and American Heroes Channel. Simultaneously, Latman continues as GM for Destination America, and will continue to report to group president Henry Schleiff.

CBS is introducing a whole lot of drama with the announcement of its midseason lineup that includes the series premieres of Ransom, Training Day and Doubt. The network will roll out its new scripted programming on Sunday, January 1, with the launch of Ransom, a crime drama about a world-renowned crisis and hostage negotiator. The show will then move to its regular Saturday 9p time period.  Crime thriller Training Day, starring Bill Paxton and Justin Cornwell, debuts Thursday, February 2 at 10p; Katherine Heigl-starring Doubt, about a brilliant attorney at a boutique firm who starts to fall for her charismatic client, debuts Wednesday, February 15 at 10p following the season finale of Code Black. Rounding out the schedule, competition series Hunted premieres Sunday, January 22, then moves to Wednesdays. The eighth season of Undercover Boss drops Wednesday, December 21 at 8p, the new Survivor season debuts Wednesday, March 8 at 8p, and The Amazing Race returns Friday, April 21 at 8p. The premieres of Superior Donuts and Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders are yet to be announced.

Two weeks after the season 4 finale, comes news that Showtime will not air a fifth season of period drama Masters of Sex. The series, which stars Michael Sheen and Lizzy Caplan, has garnered critical acclaim but only modest ratings for the network, which did not provide details about its decision.

Retiring Dallas Police Chief David Brown is joining ABC News as a contributor starting January 1. Brown is a 33-year veteran of the Dallas Police Department; in July, five officers in his department were killed by a lone gunman during a peaceful protest against law enforcement and he became a voice to help his community heal.

Among the startling statistics offered in Tuesday’s Cynopsis webinar about podcasting came this, from Edison Research: a full 27 percent of people surveyed watched a TV show based on sponsorship or advertising they heard on a podcast. PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

London-based NBCUniversal International Studios, Mediengruppe RTL Deutschland (Germany) and TF1 (France) greenlit Gone, a procedural drama series based on Chelsea Cain‘s novel One Kick. Chris Noth will star in the 12 one-hour episodes, created by Matt Lopez (The Sorcerer’s Apprentice) to be launched in late 2017-early 2018. Gone tells the fictional story of Kit “Kick” Lannigan, survivor of a famous child abduction case and Frank Booth (Noth), the F.B.I. agent who rescued her. All episodes will be written, cast and produced in the US.

Producer Tom Jennings promises “a documentary like other” with Smithsonian Channel‘s The Lost Tapes: Pearl Harbor, premiering this Sunday at 9p. Hear more from Jennings on the technology that’s bringing history to life – plus a surprising piece of information about First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt – in the latest Cynsiders.

HBO is moving production of Ballers from Florida to California for season 3. The Dwayne Johnson-starring football comedy is set to reap $8.3 million from the latest round of California’s TV tax incentive program.

The Producers Guild of America is expanding its partnership with the Branded Entertainment Network. The continued strategic alliance provides BEN clients with integration opportunities across film, television and new media from PGA members.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

Beginning this week, RLTV will air Marie! weekdays at 2p. Hosted by Marie Osmond, Marie! is an inspirational talk-show series. Celebrity guests participate in discussions on lifestyle tips and trends, and socially important issues. RLTV licensed cable rights to the series from Associated Television International.

Z Living will premiere three new series in a new primetime programming block that kicks off Tuesday, January 17. New series are: Finding Fido, which features photographer and New York Times best-selling author Seth Casteel (“Underwater Dogs,” “Pounce”), playing matchmaker to hopeful pet owners-to-be and dogs in need of homes, debuting at 8p and 8:30p. Altar’d, debuting at 9p, captures the journeys of six engaged couples determined to lose weight and adopt healthy lifestyles before saying “I do.” From Popsugar Studios, Conquered will debut at 10p with unique and uplifting stories about people  from the everyday to the influential  who have broken boundaries and conquered obstacles in order to achieve their goals.

COMING UP

Chicago Fire will celebrate its milestone 100th episode on Tuesday, December 6 at 10p on NBC. Appropriately titled “One Hundred,” the ep features Lt. Casey (Jesse Spencer) and Dawson (Monica Raymund) applying for permanent adoption of Louie.

Travel Channel‘s December Chillcation-er Don Wildman will dig deep into the mysteries of Alcatraz, the White House, dinosaurs and King Tut on special weekly episodes of Mysteries at the Museum beginning Thursday, January 5 at 9p.

VH1 is adding more talent to its upcoming VH1 Divas Holiday: Unsilent Night. Bebe Rexha, JoJo, and Serayah will join vocal forces for a group performance during the holiday concert event, which airs Monday, December 5 at 9p.

CASTING

Paul Bettany (Gangster No. 1, Captain America: Civil War) will lead the cast of Discovery Channel’s upcoming scripted series Manifesto, set to air next year.  Produced with Lionsgate and Trigger Street Productions, the series will tell the story of how the FBI brought down Ted Kaczynski (Bettany), aka the “Unabomber.”

SYNDICATION

It’s back. Wonderama, the studio-audience participation show that entertained families for more than four decades, will mark its comeback on Saturday, January 7 featuring a new look, a new host – David Osmond – and a new array of guests and segments. Produced by Chuck Armstrong, Wonderama is syndicated nationally and will initially air across Tribune Broadcasting’s owned or operated stations in 13 US markets, with multiple brand extensions on key digital platforms.

DIGITAL DOINGS

Halo videogame developer 343 Industries and Pilgram Media Group (The Ultimate Fighter) are co-developing a reality-competition e-sports series featuring Halo 5: Guardians. This is the first project to emerge from the joint venture among Pilgrim, Lionsgate and esports developer ESL to create and distribute original esports entertainment content for television and digital distribution.

GOING GLOBAL

Canada’s Family Channel is lining up the a month of holiday-themed eps and other holiday treats including the December 2 network premiere of Get Santa, followed by classic holiday flick Home Alone 3. The merriment continues throughout the month with seasonal programming beginning at 10a every Saturday and Sunday and festive movies on Fridays and Saturdays at 8p, including The Flight Before Christmas, Santa’s Apprentice, Scoot and Kassie’s Christmas Adventure, and Hank Zipzer and the Christmas Catastrophe.

Bomanbridge Media, a Singapore-based content distribution and production agency, added animated series Mojicons, from Denmark’s Ink Group, to its lineup. Mojicons shows the behind-the-scenes world of the Internet, which is populated by Mojicons  the innumerable emoticons we routinely use in email communication and mobile messaging.

RATINGS

A&E Network’s Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath premiered Tuesday night at 10p to 2.1 million total viewers and 1.1 million viewers in the A25-54 demo, making it the network’s No. 1 new series launch in more than two years. The original docuseries also attracted 913,000 A18-49 viewers, according to Nielsen Fast Cable Ratings.

The Simpsons propelled FXX into the ranks of the Top 10 basic cable networks. The first four days of the 13-day The Simpsons 600 Marathon, which began on Thanksgiving, drove FXX to rank No. 8 among all basic cable networks in A18-49 and No. 5 among A18-34 in Total Day viewing. In Primetime, FXX advanced to No. 10 among A18-49 and No. 5 among Adults 18-34 over the Thanksgiving holiday.

Hallmark Channel scored its strongest ratings performance of the 2016 “Countdown to Christmas” season with the network’s five new Thanksgiving Weekend Event original world premieres catapulting the network to No. 1 in Total Day for five consecutive nights (Wednesday, November 23 through Sunday, November 27) among W25-54 as well as to No. 1 in Prime Time from Wednesday, November 23 through Saturday, November 26 among Household ratings. Crown Media Family Networks‘ debut of the 65th anniversary ‘Hallmark Hall of Fame’ original movie A Heavenly Christmas also set delivery records, delivering a gross 5.2 HH rating across Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Movies & Mysteries as well as reaching the largest number of Total Viewers for a Crown Media original movie debut in the network’s history.

Univision Deportes delivered strong results with its sports content of the Liga MX Liguilla (playoffs). The Thursday, November 24 “Super Clasico” match between Club America and Chivas de Guadalajara on Univision Network, simulcast on UDN, delivered an average audience of 2.9 million Total Viewers 2+ and 1.6 million A18-49, largest audience ever, on any network, for a first leg match in a Liga MX Quarterfinal round.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Matt Lauer re-upped his contract with NBC morning show Today through 2018. The deal will see Lauer pocketing $20 million a year, according to The New York Post, which first reported the news.

NBC promoted business affairs executives Masami Yamamoto and Lee Straus. Yamamoto is the newly named EVP, business affairs, scripted programming for NBC Entertainment & Universal Television; Straus will be elevated to EVP, business affairs, alternative/reality and specials programming for NBC Entertainment & Universal Television Alternative Studio. Both have been part of NBC’s legal or business affairs departments since 2000.

Digital solutions company Iconic Group hired Jaclyn Cannon as its first chief digital officer. Cannon most recently was the director of mobile strategy for Cartoon Network.

Production company Derby added Catherine Orchard to its directorial roster. Orchard has worked in creative departments of companies including Bobbi Brown, Alice + Olivia, Jane and Travel + Leisure and Teen Vogue.

IN MEMORIAM

Grant Tinker, former chairman/CEO of NBC, died on Tuesday, November 29. He was 90. Tinker took the helm at NBC in 1981, and together with entertainment president Brandon Tartikoff delivered a massive ratings turnaround that saw NBC power up from last to first place in ratings with new shows including Cheers, The Cosby Show, Family Ties, Golden Girls and Hill Street Blues. Prior to his time at NBC, in 1969 Tinker and his then-wife, actress Mary Tyler Moore, launched indie production house MTM Enterprises, the company behind series including The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Rhoda, The Bob Newhart Show, WKRP in Cincinnati and Hill Street Blues. Tinker won a personal Peabody Award in 1994 and was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame in 1997. He is survived by his four children, including director/producer Mark Tinker and writer/producer John Tinker.
