David Letterman’s last day as host of CBS’s Late Show has been set for Wednesday, May 20. “It’s going to be tough to say goodbye, but I know we will all cherish the shows leading up to Dave’s final broadcast,” said CBS CEO Les Moonves. Letterman, who has hosted the Late Show for 22 years, announced his retirement on April 3. Stephen Colbert will take Letterman’s seat; his last day hosting Comedy’s The Colbert Report is December 18.

TiVo Research announced the results of its fifth annual “Promo Conversion Report,” measuring the effectiveness of fall season series premiere campaigns. “Pushing a new show hard through a high promo count does not guarantee success,” noted TiVo chief research officer Jonathan Steuer. “Viewers respond to the quality of programming and promotion, not quantity.” The report cites The Flash as an example – the CW drama was 22nd out of 23rd in reach, but ranked fifth on TiVo’s promo conversion list. Fox’s Gotham topped the chart, with a 21.5 percent conversion rate, followed by ABC’s How to Get Away with Murder (18.8 percent) and CBS’s Scorpion (18.6 percent).

Comedian Amy Schumer (Inside Amy Schumer), tapped to host the 2015 MTV Movie Awards, announced the news personally on MTV’s social media accounts. “I am honored to be hosting the awards,” said Schumer. “I will carry the audience with me like a teen mom #breaktheinternet #breakmywater.” Awards show airs live Sunday, April 12 at 9p. Official sponsors include Fiat, Geico, Taco Bell and T-Mobile.

Univision Communications announced a new commitment in partnership with Too Small to Fail to help Hispanic caregivers improve early learning. Initiatives in 2015 include new programming that integrates messages about the benefits of bilingualism, developing new tools to empower Hispanic parents to better assess the quality of childcare centers and encouraging families to spend more time talking, singing and reading to young children.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Production is underway in Raleigh, NC for UP original pilot #Holderness (wt), a reality show from Figure 8 Films focusing on the husband and wife team behind viral videos like “All About That Baste.” UP has ordered two eps, each ending with new videos, slated to premiere on UP and UPtv.com in February.

Dancing with the Stars champ Alfonso Ribeiro isn’t just sitting home staring at his mirror trophy ball. The performer has partnered with Thinkfactory Media on projects, including community makeover series Hometown Rebound; Ribeiro and Thinkfactory also collaborated on ABC Family’s Spell-Mageddon.

T Group Productions is expanding their international presence with a co-production partnership with British producers Natalka Znak (Hell’s Kitchen) and Simon Jones (American Idol) and their company Znak&Jones. Under the deal, T Group will join forces with the London office of Znak & Jones on specific projects to pitch directly to UK broadcasters.

BBC One is adapting J.K. Rowling’s Cormoran Strike crime novels for a drama series, produced by Rowling’s Bronte Film and TV. The Harry Potter creator has a miniseries adaptation of her novel “The Casual Vacancy” in the works for a BBC One debut in February.

BRANDS AND ADVERTISING

The fact that Instagram now has a bigger active user base than Twitter (over 300 million versus 284 million, for those keeping count) may not be as meaningful to some brands as its plan to bolster authenticity. Verified badges for public figures and brands “will make it easier for people to identify and follow the authentic brands they care about,” said the company, which is also deleting spammy accounts to “genuinely reflect the people who are engaging” with content.

A new study from the CMO Council and Nielsen reports that digital brand advertising is growing faster than direct response, with marketers running 33 percent more digital brand ad campaigns than digital direct response campaigns, and 19 percent more digital brand campaigns versus 2013. Within digital, 81 percent of marketers said they planned to increase the use of social, while 65 percent planned a digital video boost.

CASTING

Cuba Gooding (Jerry Maguire) will play O.J. Simpson and Sarah Paulson (American Horror Story) takes on the role of prosecutor Marcia Clark in the first installment of Ryan Murphy’s FX anthology miniseries, American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson.

Justin Long (Accepted) has been cast as the male lead in ABC comedy project Irreversible, based on an Israeli format. A pilot with David Schwimmer (Friends) in the role didn’t make it on the schedule.

Kirsten Dunst (Melancholia) and Jesse Plemons (Breaking Bad) landed starring roles in season two of FX’s Fargo. Production begins in January for a fall 2015 premiere.

INTERNATIONAL HAPPENINGS

Dreamworks Animation announced a new channel slated to broadcast to 19 Asian countries in the second half of 2015. The 24/7 net will launch with 2000 hours of programming, plus 1200 hours currently in production.

Mongolia’s Got Talent, too. Lots of it. In addition to creating a local version of the format from Syco Entertainment and FremantleMedia, Mongol TV will acquire season eight of the UK version. “Thank you and congratulations, Mongolia!” said Syco’s Simon Cowell.

Singapore-based Bomanbridge Media is going to the dogs. The distribution/production agency has partnered with distributor Banijay International to sell two reality series to Thailand satellite operator TrueVisions: Pound Pups to Dog Stars, and Village Vets.
