Police drama Rizzoli & Isles will make it to season six on TNT, with a largest-yet order of 18 episodes. This summer, the show was the number one basic cable drama in total viewers with 7.6 million average viewers in Live+7. Seems like a no-brainer, but the renewal was reportedly delayed by the exit of TNT and TBS programming president Michael Wright, who had been negotiating with Warner Horizon Television for a two-season deal. Series returns in February to finish out season five.

IN THE NEWS

Fox Broadcasting and Fox International Channels will premiere M. Night Shyamalan event series Wayward Pines in 125 countries on Thursday, May 14 at 9p, the largest day-and-date launch ever for a scripted series. The 10-episode psychological thriller from FX Productions stars Matt Dillon as a Secret Service agent.

More change is afoot at Pivot, which is yanking TakePartLive. The show was moved from late night to primetime in May, when Meghan McCain and comedian Eddie Huang (since replaced by Baratunde Thurston) were added to mix. “We thank our hosts and producers, they are incredibly talented and we’re already in discussion to work with them in different ways so that they can continue to have a place on Pivot,” said the net. Evan Shapiro, who launched Pivot, left last month; he’s now EVP digital enterprises at NBCUniversal.

So, is Starz for sale? “I wake up one day thinking everyone wants to buy Starz, and the next day I wake to find out nobody wants to buy Starz,” joked CEO Chris Albrecht, at the UBS Global Media and Communications Conference, of reports that potential buyers are circling. Bottom line: While Albrecht acknowledged that people in the media business “are always talking to each other,” he also insisted, “I have said from the beginning that selling your company is not a strategy. We did not put the company up for auction.”

Also at the UBS conference, CBS CEO Les Moonves shrugged off concerns that the network’s dive into digital will cannibalize its linear television biz. “I don’t look at it as a disruption,” said Moonves. “Twenty million people still watch NCIS. Network is a thriving business.” As for ad dollars, digital “isn’t taking from us,” maintained the exec, “they’re taking from smaller cable networks” and print.

Hit the Floor’s Stephanie Moseley was fatally shot by her husband, rapper Earl Hayes, in an apparent murder/suicide on December 8. The 30-year-old actress/dancer had been set to return for season three of the VH1 cheerleader drama.

TruTV is on a roll, renewing three series and greenlighting two more. The Carbanaro Effect, featuring magician Michael Carbonaro, reality competition Fake Off and sketch comedy Friends of the People got new orders, while competitive-pool series Kings of Cue (wt) and Santas in the Barn, focused on Santa enthusiasts, are preparing to join the lineup. “We are continuing to take big swings in new spaces with original series that are innovative, surprising and irresistibly shareable,” said Chris Linn, president and head of programming.

Fusion has launched on Apple TV, featuring an exclusive first look at the season premiere of No You Shut Up, as well as highlights from the net’s daily and weekly topical programs, full episodes of original series, documentaries and curated content. “Fusion’s audience was born on the digital frontier,” said Fusion CEO Isaac Lee. “We are taking a significant step to make sure we are reaching this powerful and dynamic audience everywhere they consume content.”

Showtime Networks has launched Showtime Anytime on the Xbox One game console, available for free to Xbox Live members in the U.S. Users have unlimited on demand access to hundreds of hours of programming, plus the live broadcast of the net’s East and West Coast feeds.

The Television Academy is presenting “An Evening with The Fosters” at the El Portal Theatre in North Hollywood on Monday, December 15. Cast and showrunners from the ABC Family drama will be on hand for an advance screening and panel discussion.

DISTRIBUTION AND CARRIAGE

In the first long-form content partnership between Discovery Communications and Hulu, the streaming service will feature programming from Discovery, TLC, Animal Planet, ID, Science, Destination America and Discovery en Espanol, beginning  January 1. “Hulu’s offering is as compelling for viewers as it is for programming partners,” said Rebecca Glashow, SVP of digital distribution and partnerships for Discovery Communications, “with a rich, brand-friendly environment.” The deal includes exclusive SVOD rights to Discovery’s long-running Deadliest Catch.

Horse happy Ride TV, launched October 1, will saddle up with Verizon Fios TV in the first half of 2015. ”This is a good content deal for both parties,” said Terry Denson, Verizon’s VP for content acquisition and strategy.  “We look forward to airing Ride TV for our customers who embrace the equestrian lifestyle.”

BRANDS AND ADVERTISING

USA and Universal Cable Productions are bringing back comedy Playing House – with a twist. A new windowing structure will allow viewers to watch the following week’s episode of season two on VOD, with select advertisers given premium placement across platforms. “We really wanted to give marketers an opportunity to truly follow our video content wherever and whenever the consumer experiences it,” said Linda Yaccarino, president of advertising sales for NBCUniversal. “The producers will collaborate with our clients to develop custom content in and around the series with this distribution model in mind, as the season develops.  It is a prime opportunity for brands to maximize their messaging on different platforms to this highly engaged audience.”

Broadcast TV ad sales will be virtually flat through 2015, predicted CBS chief research officer David Poltrack at UBS’s Global Media and Communications Conference. Taking out Winter Olympics gains in 2014, Poltrack says the market could be up 1 percent.

New data from the Association of National Advertisers and fraud detection firm White Ops identified 23 percent of video ad impressions as bot fraud in 181 campaigns for ANA member companies including Walmart, Ford, Kellogg’s and Johnson & Johnson, among others. “This study confirmed some prior assumptions and fears, but it is not about sowing distrust or policing ecosystem partners,” said Michael Tiffany, White Ops CEO. “It’s about stopping outright criminal theft. Ad fraud is hugely profitable and is one of the major sources of funding for a global underground responsible for a broad spectrum of cybercrime.” The report offered 17 recommendations to help fight fraud, including advertising during waking hours, and demanding transparency for sourced traffic.
