IN THE NEWS

The CW is ending the reign of Reign after its upcoming fourth season, which debuts February 10. The story of a young Mary Queen of Scots, from CBS TV Studios, has just begun filming the season 4 finale, which now will be a series closer.

Lester Holt didn’t end up anchoring NBC Nightly News live from Hawaii last night as planned, on the 75th anniversary of the Pearl Harbor attack. Holt explained via a Facebook post that “an illness in the family prevents me from being there.” The broadcast still contained Holt’s taped interview with former Nightly News anchor Tom Brokaw.

More legal discord for CNN. The network is facing a class action suit from a former employee and others, based on the network’s own books. DeWayne Walker, a producer at CNN who filed a $50 million suit earlier this year claiming racial discrimination and retaliation, filed another suit this week against CNN, Time Warner & Turner. “As a result of the current discrimination lawsuit… we have uncovered stories involving abuse of power, nepotism, revenge, retaliation and discrimination,” Walker’s attorney Daniel Meachum said in a statement today.

Presenters for the 22nd Annual Critics’ Choice Awards include Amy Adams, Ty Burrell, Lily Collins, Common, Kaley Cuoco, Bryce Dallas Howard, Kevin Hart, Nicole Kidman, Leslie Mann, James Marsden, Michelle Monaghan, Jeremy Renner, Bella Thorne, Justin Timberlake and Damon Wayans. Winners will be revealed live on A&E on Sunday, December 11 at 8p, following the Critics’ Choice Red Carpet Live special on the network.

For the first time since Ink Master debuted, the Spike show has a female winner. Ryan Ashley was named champ of season 8, earning among other things a cash prize of $100,000  and some serious bragging rights.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

truTV is going all-in on comedy. On the heels of its brand refresh announcement last week, the network ordered additional seasons of original programs Adam Ruins Everything and The Carbonaro Effect, gave additional episode orders for freshman series Greatest Ever and You Can Do Better. truTV has also picked up first seasons of new series Talk Show the Game Show, starring comedian Guy Branum, and Chris Webber’s Full Court Pranks. Additionally, the network is developing new projects including those via a deal with Austin Martinez Comedy and truTV’s first animated scripted project Greenhouse (wt).

Working Title Television set up three broadcast drama series projects, the company’s first development deals since Andrew Stearn joined as president.

In development are an adaptation of James Renner tome The Man From Primrose Lane at Fox, with director/producer Alexandre Aja (The Hills Have Eyes) attached; Bermuda triangle-themed series Triangle at NBC; and dance drama series DTLA at ABC, written by Amy Talkington (Valley Girl co-writer).

History ordered a fourth season of survival series Alone in advance of the season 3 premiere. The third season launches Thursday, December 8 at 9p, placing 10 survivalists alone in the cold, isolated region of Patagonia, Argentina with one mission: to stay alive. David George, Shawn Witt, Zachary Green and Ryan Pender serve as executive producers for Leftfield Pictures; Zachary Behr and Russ McCarroll serve as executive producers for History.

Home renovation series This Old House will be restoring an abandoned home in Detroit for the show’s 37th season, through the city’s ‘Rehabbed & Ready’ program. This is the second time the series, which airs nationally on PBS, will tackle a renovation project in Michigan. The building, initially filled with discarded belongings and refuse, was gutted by a team of Detroit-based contractors to install all new plumbing, wiring and mechanicals, a new kitchen, two bathrooms, and landscaping all within a four-month period. The house will go on the market in early 2017.

Discovery is putting a new spin on the survivalist genre with The Wheel, a new adventure series from Pilgrim Media Group in which six participants must survive in six distinctly grueling landscapes across South America. With every turn of the wheel, each survivalist is dropped into a new isolated location and exposed to the  deadly terrains including freezing tundra, rugged mountains and treacherous rainforest. Participants don’t know when or why the wheel will turn. Series premieres Friday, January 13 at 10p.
