IN THE NEWS

First Lady Michelle Obama Says Farewell to the White House  An Oprah Winfrey Special airs Monday, December 19 at 8p on CBS, with OWN airing a second showing on Wednesday, December 21 at 9p. The special, to be taped later this month, will feature Winfrey speaking to the First Lady for her final one-on-one interview inside the White House.

It’s official! The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has chosen Jimmy Kimmel to host the 2017 Oscars.  The ceremony is set for Sunday, February 26 on ABC. Last year’s show was hosted by Chris Rock.

CBS Chief Research Officer David Poltrack addressed worry about the decline in NFL ratings and other perceived threats to broadcasting at his annual state of the industry report for the UBS Global Media and Communications Conference on Monday. Poltrack said that while the football ratings fumble was “quite a shock,” it was primarily due to “incremental competition from coverage of the presidential race.” Since the election, NFL “ratings are still running below last year, but the gap is narrowing.” Poltrack added that there is “no reason to conclude a seminal change” has taken place in the appeal of TV’s most popular programming, and said broadcasters have little to fear from the growth of online streaming.

Also at the UBS conference, CEO Les Moonves addressed the fact that CBS was the one major broadcaster not included when AT&T rolled out the offering for its $35/month DirectTV Now streaming service last week. That could soon change, said Moonves, noting that the companies are talking and, “I’m assuming we’ll be able to make a deal with them.” Moonves observed CBS is “different” from other broadcasters because it is negotiating just for CBS network programming and Showtime, and not a package of other channels. “That’s why we’re more demanding,” he said.

Today co-anchor Savannah Guthrie signed a multi-year deal to extend her stay with the morning show, according to reports. NBC News has yet to confirm the new pact. Guthrie recently left on maternity leave, ahead of the birth of her second child.

The WGA announced nominations for outstanding achievement in television, new media, news, radio and promotional writing during 2016. In the TV drama series category, cable and streaming services dominated with The Americans (FOX), AMC’s Better Call Saul, HBO’s Game of Thrones, Netflix’s Stranger Things and Westworld (HBO). Comedy series followed the same pattern with Atlanta (FX), Silicon Valley (HBO), Transparent (Amazon), Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (Netflix) and Veep (HBO). In the new series category, NBC’s This is Us was the sole broadcast nominee, alongside Atlanta (FX), Better Things (FX) and Westworld (HBO). Winners will be announced at the 2017 Writers Guild Awards on Sunday, February 19, at ceremonies in New York and Los Angeles.

Comcast NBCUniversal will offer a video description service during Hairspray Live! so the visually impaired can experience the broadcast on Wednesday, December 7 at 8p. Last year, NBC made history when The Wiz Live! was the first live entertainment program in U.S. history to include video description narration. "Comcast NBCUniversal is a trailblazer in the area of accessibility and digital inclusion; this is yet another example of their commitment to ensuring people with vision loss have equal access to entertainment and news,” said Kirk Adams, president and CEO of the American Foundation for the Blind.

Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest 2017 expands its annual New Year’s Eve tradition with coverage from New Orleans, in its first-ever Central Time Zone countdown. The live segments will include exclusive performances from the Allstate Fan Fest and interviews leading up to the midnight countdown and fleur-de-lis drop near Jackson Square to ring in 2017. Show airs Saturday, December 31 beginning at 8p on ABC.

The 2017 Billboard Music Awards return to ABC and will be broadcast live on Sunday, May 21 at 8p. The program showcases the year’s hottest musical acts, big performances and buzzworthy pop culture moments.

Texas A&M class of ’91 alumnus Roland S. Martin is set to host his TV One daily news program, NewsOne Now, live from campus today and Wednesday, December 7 at 7a. Dubbed by the university as “an opportunity to stand together in unwavering conviction that Aggies are strongest when united,” Aggies United is scheduled opposite white nationalist and “alt-right” leader Richard Spencer’s speaking engagement, which is also being held on campus.
