IN THE NEWS

Nominations for the 2015 WGA Awards were announced on December 4. HBO‘s True Detective and Silicon Valley and Amazon newbie Transparent garnered multiple nominations. Returning series up for the drama award include Game of Thrones, House of Cards, Mad Men and The Good Wife. Comedies up for awards include Orange Is the New Black, Louie and Veep. In the wake of sexual assault accusations levied against him, the U.S. Navy is revoking Bill Cosby’s honorary title of Chief Petty Officer, given to him in 2011. “The Navy is taking this action because allegations against Mr. Cosby are very serious and are in conflict with the Navy’s core values of honor, courage and commitment,” the Navy statement said. Cosby enlisted in the Navy in 1956 and was honorably discharged in 1960 as a petty officer third class.

It’s a reunion four years in the making. Bravo brings back together two of the original Real Housewives of Atlanta, Nene Leakes and Kim Zolciak Biermann, when they join host Andy Cohen on a special episode of WATCH What Happens Live, airing Sunday, December 7 at 9p. Immediately following at 9:30p is the season premiere of The Millionaire Matchmaker, where Patti’s clients are Larry Birkhead, the father of Anna Nicole Smith’s daughter Dannielynn, and Melyssa Ford of Blood, Sweat & Heels.

E! has set a premiere date for The Royals: Sunday, March 15 at 10p. The 60-minute drama depicts a fictional monarchy in modern times. Leading the cast are Elizabeth Hurley and Vincent Regan as Queen Helena and King Simon, along with William Moseley as Prince Liam and Alexandra Park as Princess Eleanor. Joan Collins will also star as Hurley’s mother, the Grand Duchess of Oxford.

TV Land is giving viewers a look at Younger, its newest original series from Sex and the City creator Darren Star, with a newly released extended scene: http://youtu.be/m-sRRDudUR4. Now shooting in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, the series, which stars Sutton Foster, Hilary Duff, Debi Mazar, Miriam Shor and Nico Tortorella, premieres Tuesday, March 31 at 10p. "Younger has an irresistible take on secrets, sex and second chances,” said Larry W. Jones, President of TV Land. “The series will now serve as the launching pad for the network’s new edgier comedies including Impastor, Teachers and The Jim Gaffigan Show, which will premiere later in the spring and summer.”

ABC has released the names and occupations of the record 30 bachelorettes who’ll be competing to capture the heart of Iowa farmer Chris Soules, when ABC’s The Bachelor returns for its 19th season. Among them there will be a plus-size model, a WWE diva-in-training, a cadaver tissue saleswoman and a former NFL cheerleader. The series premieres on Monday, January 5 at 8p with a live event – for the first time.

Also looking for love will be five plus-sized ladies on Lifetime‘s new series Big Women: Big Love, premiering Thursday, January 1 at 10p. The docusoap examines the lives of extra curvy women as they navigate the dating scene.

Sportsman Channel has issued the following statement to set the record straight about a report that made the rounds on December 3: “[On Wednesday], the Illinois Department of Natural Resources posted an erroneous press release linking Sportsman Channel to the show ‘Wired Arrow Outdoors.’ Sportsman Channel has no connection to the series or its producers. The show never aired on Sportsman Channel.” Wired Arrow Outdoors is a bow-hunting group that’s been charged for illegally taking 18 white-tailed deer.

Hollywood choreographer Cris Judd has been tapped to serve as the official Dance Scout for NBC‘s new season of America’s Got Talent. Said Judd, “My goal is to offer hesitant contestants confidence and alleviate their fearsof auditioning.” Registration for open call cities is currently underway, with online auditions continuing through March 2015.

CBS‘ four-hour limited event series The Dovekeepers, executive produced by Roma Downey and Mark Burnett, is slated for broadcast Tuesday, March 31 and Wednesday, April 1 at 9p. Based on Alice Hoffman’s novel about a group of women whose lives intersect in a fight for survival at the siege of Masada in 70 c.e., the project stars Cote de Pablo, Rachel Brosnahan and Kathryn Prescott.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Universal Cable Productions has acquired the rights to Kurt Kuenne’s documentary Dear Zachary and plans to develop it into a miniseries. Sean Perrone and Aaron Kaplan will executive produce the project, which highlights failures within Canada’s legal system. “Dear Zachary is a beautiful, suspenseful, and ultimately gut-wrenching journey about a family that pulls at your heartstrings. Working with Kaplan/Perrone we are committed to finding an exceptional writer to adapt this important documentary,” said Dawn Olmstead, EVP, Universal Cable Productions Development.

AMC has ordered a pilot for a series based on Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon’s ‘90s comic book franchise, Preacher. The Sony Pictures Television and AMC Studios co-production was developed for TV by Sam Catlin, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. The story centers on a conflicted preacher in a small Texas town who merges with a creature that has escaped from heaven and develops the ability to make anyone do anything he says. Ahem. The pilot will be produced in the summer of 2015 for series consideration in 2016.

COMING UP

Two years after a gunman opened fire on students and staff at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT, a group of educators who were there that day will talk with CBS Sunday Morning with Charles Osgood’s Jane Pauley about their lives since and their mission to change gun control laws.

Oxygen Media will premiere Living Different on Tuesday, January 6 at 9p. Each hour-long episode of the four-part event features stories of women as they follow their passion, from an all-girl Hasidic rock band to an androgynous model who dates both males and females.

Ten home cooks from across the country are paired with some of Food Network‘s biggest names, including Bobby Flay (Beat Bobby Flay), Alex Guarnaschelli (Chopped), Curtis Stone (Kitchen Inferno) and Michael Symon (Iron Chef America), in the new culinary competition All-Star Academy. Over the course of eight episodes, cooks are eliminated by special guest judges, who determine which dishes are not up to par. One cook will be left standing, winning bragging rights and $50,000.

Back-to-back new episodes of Say Yes to the Dress air Friday, December 5 beginning at 9p on TLC. Former Miss USA Erin Brady is just one of the brides who are searching for the gown of her dreams.

RETURNING SERIES

TLC brings back Sister Wives for eight new episodes, kicking off with a super-sized two-hour winter season premiere on Sunday, January 4 at 9p. The show follows the Brown family through the trials and tribulations that come with the plural marriage lifestyle.

The second season of WE tv‘s Marriage Boot Camp Reality Stars premieres Friday, January 9 at 9p. This time around, the couples working out their issues during intense therapy with husband and wife boot camp directors Jim and Elizabeth Carroll are Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt (The Hills), Aviva and Reid Drescher (The Real Housewives of New York), Natalie Nunn and Jacob Payne (Bad Girls Club, Bridezillas), Tyson Apostol and Rachel Foulger (Survivor: Blood vs. Water), and Syleena Johnson and Kiwane Garris (R&B Divas).

TNT has renewed FBI drama Legends for a second season. The show, which follows a deep-cover operative who has the ability to transform himself into a different person for each job, was one of the network’s solid summer debuts.

BBC America has picked up a second season of its first original comedy series Almost Royal.

When the show returns, Georgie and Poppy, the 57th and 58th in line to the throne, continue their examination of American culture, exploring subjects like beauty, holidays, and sports as well as law and order.

CASTING

Cliff Curtis (Gang Related) has snagged the starring role in the new pilot from Robert Kirkman and Dave Erickson. The untitled companion series to The Walking Dead explores the onset of the same zombie apocalypse as the hit AMC show, but takes place at a different location. Curtis will play Sean Cabrera, a teacher who shares a son with his ex-wife Andrea.

Dexter alum CS Lee is the latest addition to the season two cast of HBO‘s True Detective. He’ll recur as Richard Geldof, a state attorney general with political ambitions.

Krysten Ritter (Don’t Trust the B in Apartment 23) has been tapped to star in Marvel’s Netflix series Jessica Jones, according to The Hollywood Reporter.  She’ll play the title character, a superhero suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder that leads her to hang up her costume and open her own detective agency.
