Super Bowl 50 will see Coldplay as a headliner for the Feb. 7 event. The news was broken before last night’s TNF game on CBS and NFL Network, with other acts (unannounced at press time) also set to join Chris Martin and the band during the Pepsi-sponsored celebration. Coldplay’s appearance follows the release of

their seventh studio album “A Head Full of Dreams” on Dec. 4 and follows Katy Perry, Bruno Mars and Beyonce in the high-profile slot.

ON THE AIR

ESPN is gearing up to showcase its 20th straight Major League Soccer championship on Sunday at 4p with the live presentation of 2015 MLS Cup pitting the Portland Timbers/Columbus Crew SC at MAPFRE Stadium in Ohio. Adrian Healey calls the shots, with analyst Taylor Twellman and reporter Monica Gonzalez, while Max Bretos, Kaseyt Keller and Alejandro Moreno host pregame, haldtime and post-game studio coverage. Today, ESPN FC on TV will dedicate the entire program to 2015 MLS Cup on ESPN2 at 5p. Meanwhile, ESPN International will televise 2015 MLS Cup on ESPN networks in 59 countries and territories covering more than 56 million television homes.

Speaking of soccer, the US investigation into corruption at FIFA saw 16 additional names indicted on Thursday, including five current and former members of FIFA’s ruling executive committee. Notable among the names in the latest haul were Juan Angel Napout, president of the South American confederation, and Alfredo Hawit of Honduras, head of the North and Central American and Caribbean governing body. Meanwhile, FIFA’s Executive Committee on Thursday "unanimously" approved a slate of reforms designed to halt a culture of corruption, including limiting presidents to a maximum 12 years in the role and adding "transparency of compensation" for leading officials.

NBCSN reports its most-watched November in network history in Total Day Viewership, courtesy of its first-ever Notre Dame Football game, the NASCAR Sprint Cup Playoff race from Martinsville, NHL and Premier League action, and season-ending Formula One competition. Nielsen’s live plus same day data saw the channel average 146,000 Total Day for a markup pf 85% over Nov, 2014. In addition, the network averaged 285,000 primetime viewers in the month to rise 116% from last year. NBC Sports Group also announced that its third season of Formula One scored its highest viewership to date for the package, highlighted by NBCSN delivering the most-watched F1 season for a single cable network in two decades. Overall, NBC Sports Group’s F1 coverage on NBC/NBCSN/CNBC averaged 521,000 viewers, up 14 % over 2014 with NBCSN averaging 418,000 viewers for its live coverage of 13 races this season, up 9%.

Anchored by the Big Ten Championship Game on Saturday, FOX Sports launches its FOX Salutes the Military lineup starting today and running through Dec. 7. The conference battle pits Iowa/Michigan State on Saturday at 8p, with Gus Johnson, Joel Klatt and Molly McGrath on microphone duties. With FOX Sports anchored in Pearl Harbor, other events will include an international soccer friendly featuring the United States Women’s National Team/Trinidad & Tobago on Sunday from Aloha Stadium in Honolulu, an FS1 set on Ford Pier, a special two-hour edition of FOX NFL Sunday from Ford Pier, as well as the FS1 Pearl harbor Invitational.

The College Football Playoff Selection Day presented by AT&T on Sunday on ESPN kicks off at noon with a four-hour special dedicated to the announcement of the teams participating in the two Playoff Semifinals  the Capital One Orange Bowl and the Goodyear Cotton Bowl. The official announcement will come around 12:30p while teams selected for the other four New Year’s Six bowls (Allstate Sugar Bowl, Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl, Rose Bowl Game presented by Northwestern Mutual, Fiesta Bowl) and the final Top 25 rankings will be announced near 3p. ESPN’s Rece Davis hosts.

CBS begins its descent into March Madness on Saturday when it opens its coverage of the college basketball season at 12”30p with Wisconsin/Temple. Carter Blackburn teams with analyst Bill Raftery to call the action.

Golf Channel’s Morning Drive spotlights the art and science of golf course design next week from Dec. 7-13 as a part of ‘Architecture Week.’ The series will dedicate daily features on some of the game’s most notable architects, courses and designs in golf; invite industry experts to Golf Channel’s worldwide headquarters for roundtable discussions, including 2006 U.S. Open champion Geoff Ogilvy, and highlight some of the legends of the game as special guests, including Jack Nicklaus. Architecture Week also will give a glimpse into the future of golf course design. Matt Ginella spearheads coverage.

MLB Network series MLB Network Presents is back next week, starting Dec. 10 at 8p, with a new slate of documentaries and profiles hosted by Bob Costas. Features include “the story of baseball glory returning to Kansas City, an in-depth look at the man who Rolling Stone dubbed “The Most Interesting Man in Baseball” Lenny Randle, and a detailed account of the creation and impact the Astrodome had on the sports and entertainment industry.” Below are details on the upcoming MLB Network Presents programs:

Yahoo! Sports Radio and Gow Media are tweaking its programming lineup, with most changes coming Jan. 4. Joe Spano joins the weekday, daytime lineup from 10a-noon, while Matt Perrault gets his own series that will run from 10p-1a. YSR has also announced the addition of Lewis Woodward, who debuted on Yahoo! Sports Radio this past Friday morning at 10a, as well as Nothing But Net, with former NBA guard Troy Hudson starting Dec. 10 at 8p.

Bleacher Report is teaming with hip-hop duo Blackalicious and advertising agency barrettSF to launch its first-ever multi-platform brand campaign, dubbed Sports Alphabet. Blackalicious remixed its A-Z rhyming style from their hit single ‘Alphabet Aerobics,’ for the campaign “The Bleacher Report brand is getting bigger and louder and we wanted to create a spot that was consistent with that persona," said Dorth Raphaely, GM of Bleacher Report. “We couldn’t be more pleased with the spot and the performance by Blackalicious. We think it will resonate with the young, vibrant demographic that connects so deeply with our brand.” The promotional slate launched yesterday, serving up more than 50 sports references integrated into 26 wild animation styles.

Bud Light is taking its recent campaign centered on team-specific cans to the next level, and will serve up 40 new can deigns that spotlight previous Super Bowl winners. The Super Bowl Series will see the likes of 49er cans commemorating the 1981, 1984, 1988, 1989 and 1994 championship teams, according to Forbes. All newly launched team cans will feature logos from the past 40 Super Bowls as well as this year’s gold-infused Super Bowl 50 logo.

Coca-Cola signed on to become a sponsor of the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, joining the likes of Nissan, Omega and P&G. The Paralympics will take place from Sept. 7-18 next year, with the soft drinks brand locking in a range of branding and marketing rights as part of the deal.

The LPGA sewed up a new licensing partnership with MK Trend, a casual apparel brand based in South Korea. MK Trend receives exclusive rights to the official LPGA logo through the seven-year deal and is scheduling a brand new golf apparel line and accessories for the 2016 Fall/Winter season. The LPGA joins the NBA as sports partners.

DIGITAL & STREAMING

A new update to the ESPN app will now let subscribers stream live events directly from WatchESPN. Upon logging in with a video subscription username and password, fans will receive one-tap access to live streaming events through the rebranded “WatchESPN” tab or by tapping “Watch Live” within a detailed game page. “Offering the convenience of live streaming within one app reinforces the value of the multichannel subscription,” said Sean Breen, Senior Vice President of Affiliate Sales, Disney & ESPN Media Networks. “Even with WatchESPN’s recent record-breaking viewership, we continue to be aggressive in driving awareness to a large scale audience and to incentivize video subscribers to authenticate.”

NBC Sports reports that its Jeff Gordon-themed #24Ever content generated 53 million impressions on Facebook and 10 million on Twitter, while, NASCAR on NBC’s Facebook page has produced 339 million total impressions on content pushed from the page since July 1. In addition, NBC Sports Extra saw Kyle Busch’s NASCAR Sprint Cup victory and Gordon’s final race rank as most-watched NASCAR race ever on the platform, reeling in 84,000 unique users and 4 million live minutes, up 126% and 64%, respectively, versus the 2015 Sprint Cup season average.

Outside Television can now be seen on Sony PlayStation Vue. The cloud-based TV through the PlayStation platform will be available in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Dallas, and Miami markets. “The rapidly growing popularity of the adventure lifestyle has put our original programming in high demand, making Outside content a great fit for an all-encompassing platform like Sony PlayStation Vue,” said Rob Faris, Senior VP, Programming and Production at Outside Television. “With this new platform we’re able to meet the desires of an emerging audience that is always on the lookout for new ways to consume content.”

SendtoNews expanded its multi-year agreement with MLB Advanced Media to include exclusive distribution of local media specific syndication of MLB and and Minor League Baseball short-form digital video content beginning in 2016. The company receives exclusive distribution rights for the digital syndication of MLB game highlights, interviews, top plays and other MLB-related video to local news websites throughout the US and Canada. In addition, the syndication agreement also includes archived content, long-form original programming and global rights for the distribution of MiLB short-form digital video content.

FANTASY/GAMING/ESPORTS

EA announced that the winner of the UFC battle between Jose Aldo and Conor McGregor will land on the cover of its UFC 2 game. The victor will join Ronda Rousey and marks the first time in EA SPORTS history that the winner of a real-world sporting event will get the opportunity to be included on a game’s cover. The cover will be revealed immediately after the undisputed world featherweight championship takes place at UFC 194: ALDO vs. McGREGOR on Saturday.
