Opponents of the $45.2 billion Comcast-Time Warner Cable merger have joined forces. The Stop Mega Comcast Coalition calls for federal regulators to reject the merger outright, noting that “no set of conditions can address the substantial harms that will be caused” by it. The group consists of 15 separate entities, including unions, public interest groups like Washington watchdog group Public Knowledge, and Dish Network and Hargray Communications.

Fox and Andy Samberg‘s The Lonely Island have agreed on the first three projects for their multi-platform collaboration: The Tyler Zone (about a man who moves to a new town and is surrounded by supernatural occurrences), Home for the Weekend (a mockumentary-style comedy following a celebrity’s return trip to his/her hometown) and Topics With Andre Hyland (an interaction between the unsuspecting public and Hyland’s band of characters).
Fox’s American Idol has landed a powerful new mentor for its upcoming 14th season: Scott Borchetta, president and CEO of Big Machine Label Group and the man who discovered Taylor Swift. “There’s only one reason I’m doing this: American Idol has proven again and again that it can launch superstars,” said Borchetta. Show returns Wednesday, January 7.
Syfy has set its cast for The Magicians. Jason Ralph (Aquarius) and Sosie Bacon (The Closer) have been tapped to star in the new series, based on Lev Grossman‘s bestsellers, following two 20-somethings studying magic in New York.
Stage and screen legend Julie Andrews returns for the sixth time to host the annual New Year’s celebration with the Vienna Philharmonic, under the direction of Zubin Mehta, from Vienna’s Musikverein. From Vienna: The New Year’s Celebration 2015, featuring the melodies of the Strauss Family and their contemporaries, airs on Great Performances, Thursday, January 1 at 2:30p on PBS (check local listings) with an encore performance at 8p.
PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Will & Grace creator Max Mutchnick and HBO are teaming up to develop Laura Knightlinger‘s book, Quick Shots of False Hope: A Rejection Collection. The comedy centers on a single mom and her mission to find a husband. Mutchnick and Knightlinger, close friends since they met at Emerson College, will write and executive produce the series via Warner Brothers.
UP has greenlit its first original scripted series, Ties That Bind [working title], a hybrid police procedural and family drama created and executive produced by Sheryl J. Anderson (Charmed, UP’s The Town that Came A-Courtin’) and Stan Spry (UP’s The Town that Came A-Courtin’, A Place in the Sun). Production on the 10-episode series begins in February, for a summer 2015 premiere.

The eighth annual CNN Heroes: An All-Star Tribute airs Sunday, December 7 at 8p on CNN. The star-studded event, hosted by Anderson Cooper from New York’s American Museum of Natural History, honors individuals making extraordinary contributions to improve the lives of others. The ep also offers a behind-the-scenes glimpse into Oprah’s Favorite Things list and more updates with Kristin Cavallari, Kristi Yamaguchi and Kenny G, on Sunday, December 7 at 9p on OWN.
Spike TV’s new original series Framework is setting out to find the next great furniture designer and builder. Contestants compete for a $100,000 cash prize and the opportunity for their work to be sold by a major manufacturer. Hip-hop artist, actor, and author, Common hosts the show, debuting Tuesday, January 6 at 10p.
Florida Georgia Line, MAGIC! and Idina Menzel have been added to the talent lineup performing live in Times Square at ABC‘s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest 2015. Special launches at 8p on Wednesday, December 31.
Singer/songwriter Sam Smith and hip-hop artist Big Sean are the latest artists announced for A Very GRAMMY Christmas. LL COOL J is hosting the special, which will include performances of holiday songs and current pop hits, as well as artists sharing their favorite holiday and GRAMMY memories. A Very GRAMMY Christmas will be broadcast Friday, December 5 at pm on CBS.
CMT’s weekly Hot 20 Countdown airs its 100th episode on Saturday, December 6 at 11a with Carrie Underwood serving as a special guest co-host. In addition, the number one artist on CMT’s All-Time Top 40: Artist’s Choice list, which began its countdown this past March, will be revealed in this special episode
Oxygen Media expands the network’s popular franchise and heads to Motown for the season premiere of Preachers Detroit on Wednesday, February 18 at 10p. The series focuses on themes of faith, family, and friendship as seven men and women of the cloth share their lives, transformations and triumphs in and out of the pulpit in Detroit, Michigan.
RETURNING SERIES
Spike TV has ordered a 10-episode third season of Catch A Contractor. The series will be filmed in Los Angeles, as well travel to Las Vegas to confront fraudulent contractors in Sin City. The new season debuts next summer.
HBO renewed Doll & Em for a six-episode second season. An original production from British Sky Broadcasting, the series will premiere on Sky Living in the U.K. before its HBO launch. Slated to guest star on the new season: Evan Rachel Wood, Olivia Wilde, Ewan McGregor and Mikhail Baryshnikov.

Will Friedle is set to reprise the role of Cory’s older brother Eric in the second season of Disney Channel‘s Girl Meets World.

Talk about wedded bliss. Sony Pictures Television has licensed the new NBC sitcom Marry Me to 74 territories over six continents. Included are Canal Sony, which picked up the show for all of Latin America, a pan-African deal with pay TV firm OSN, and an agreement with RTL CBS Entertainment, which will carry the show in the Asia Pacific region. Meanwhile, video streaming platform iQiyi.com has nabbed the series in China.
Air Farce New Year’s Eve returns to Canada’s CBC Television Wednesday, December 31 at 8p. Last year’s show attracted 1.8 million viewers, and was the net’s highest-rated entertainment program of the season.

RATINGS
CBS‘ 60 Minutes had its best numbers in two years on Sunday. The newsmagazine drew 18.4 million viewers, the most since December 2012, to finish third for the week and make Nielsen’s Top 10 for a sixth straight week its longest in-season streak on the list since December 2011.
Food Network’s Sunday delivered holiday cheer, posting a 0.7 rating A25-54 (640,000 imp), up 25 percent versus year-ago. Guy’s Grocery Games, Holiday Baking Championship and Cutthroat Kitchen pulled in over 7 million total viewers. Saturday also had a strong post-Thanksgiving showing, up 30 percent vs. year-ago with over 5.5 million viewers.
On Saturday, a record average 1.6 million P2+ viewers watched Animal Planet’s Giving Thanks Thanksgiving special, generating $50,000 in donations towards Villalobos Rescue Center in New Orleans through the “You Watch. We Give.” initiative. Giving Thanks ranked as the series’ most-watched episode ever among multiple demos, including P2+ viewers (1.6 million), P18-49 (830,000), P25-54 (777,000), W18-49 (527,000), and W25-54 (492,000).
Tuesday’s Moonshiners delivered season-high numbers for Discovery across all key demos and was the number one unscripted program in cable among M25-54 (1.63 rating) and M18-49 (1.36), and delivered2.05 million P2+ viewers.
Saturday A18-49 Analysis: ABC had the most A18-49 viewers Saturday with 0.9/3, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen. At 8p ABC’s Saturday Night Football was #1 with 1.0/4, followed by 0.8/3 for Univision’s America Chespirito. ABC remained in the top spot at 9p as Saturday Night Football rose to 1.1/4. Univision’s America Chespirito placed second with 0.9/3. At 10p ABC’s Saturday Night Football, CBS’ 48 Hours and NBC’s SNL Prime tied for the top spot with 0.8/3. Univision’s America Chespirito followed at 0.8/2.
