IN THE NEWS

Bones stars Emily Deschanel and David Boreanaz and exec producer Kathleen Reichs filed a lawsuit Monday claiming they are owed a percentage of the long-running Fox series’ profits, estimated at tens of millions of dollars. “When 20th TV finally did engage with Plaintiffs in the fifth and sixth seasons of the Series, it did so under the threat of cancelling the Series unless Plaintiffs accepted its non-negotiable license fee figure, and then concealed material information about the true value of that figure,” alleges the claim. Exec producer Barry Josephson made similar claims in a suit filed last week.

Television journalist Linda Ellerbee announced her retirement, as of January 2016. “I’m a lucky woman,” said Ellerbee. “I saw the world, met many of the world’s most interesting people and was well paid to do so. Now I choose to go, and I go smiling.” Ellerbee is best known for anchoring late-night news program NBC News Overnight in the early 80s and children’s news series Nick News with Linda Ellerbee on Nickelodeon.

Speaking of, Hello, I Must Be Going: 25 Years of Nick News with Linda Ellerbee, a retrospective series finale for the longest-running kids news show in TV history, airs Tuesday, December 15 at 8p on Nickelodeon. The hour-long special recalls some of the award-winning series’ most memorable episodes and discussions.

Discovery Communications has launched streaming service Discovery Go, offering live and on-demand access to nine networks: Discovery Channel, TLC, Animal Planet, Investigation Discovery, Science Channel, Velocity, Destination America, American Heroes Channel and Discovery Life. Pay-TV customers can browse by network or programs organized by genre, and explore curated playlists. “This aggregated TVE streaming service and strong user experience is made possible by Discovery’s 30-year commitment to content ownership and our global learnings in the space,” said Paul Guyardo, chief commercial officer for Discovery Comm. The launch coincides with the global premiere of Discovery Channel doc Racing Extinction tonight.

While we’re talking Racing Extinction, producer Fisher Stevens opens up about how a documentary could help save the planet, and why Discovery is a perfect fit (“what better partners than a network that is not only all about but also called discovery?”), in the new Cynsiders.

Univision milked the nomination announcement process for the 28th Annual Premio Lo Nuestro a la Musica Latina Latin Music Awards, with two hours of engagement with fans and influencers on the show’s digital platforms. Among the 64 stars nominated in 26 categories were Bachata singer Romeo Santos, leading the pack with seven nominations, and Juan Luis Guerra (Merengue) with six. Awards show airs live Thursday, February 18 at 8p.

At a campaign rally in Georgia, presidential candidate Donald Trump threatened to boycott the December 15 GOP debate on CNN “unless they pay me $5 million, all of which money goes to the Wounded Warriors or to vets.” Before the September debate on CNN, the billionaire wrote to CNN Worldwide president Jeff Zucker asking that profits go to charity. Trump is scheduled to guest on daytime talker Live with Kelly and Michael on December 9.

Raycom Media completed its $160 million purchase of Drewry Communications Group. The acquisition adds Oklahoma to Raycom’s portfolio and brings the company’s national share of households to over 14 percent. The transaction is part of the company’s effort to expand beyond its traditional footprint of the southeastern U.S.; in October, Raycom closed on a deal in Boise, ID.

Anthony Anderson (black-ish) signed a multi-year deal to continue as host for the 47th and 48th NAACP Image Awards. Next year’s telecast will air live on TV One on Friday, February 5 as a two-hour special.
