El Rey cancelled action drama Matador, despite a season two renewal ahead of its July series premiere. “Ultimately it was a business decision but to be clear, we were very proud of the series on every level,” said the net in a statement. “Creatively it hit the mark and we are gratified that it celebrated diversity in front of the cameras and behind the scenes.” Season one ended in October.

IN THE NEWS

Fox is not extending its Red Band Society order past the original 13 episodes. The teen drama’s fall finale (episode 10) airs Wednesday, December 3 at 9p; the most recent airing hit a series low .7 rating in the A18-49 demo.

Matt Lauer’s Today interview with Ray Rice and his wife Janay will air on the NBC morning show today, December 1 and Tuesday, December 2. It’s the NFL player’s first interview about the domestic violence incident in February that led to his suspension, overturned Friday.

Joe Bastianich is leaving Fox’s MasterChef franchise. The restaurateur has been on the cooking competition mother ship for all five seasons; his third MasterChef Junior season, launching January 6, will be his last. Bastianich, who said he is focusing on the global expansion of his culinary enterprises, will continue on MasterChef Italia in Italy, as well as On the Road for Italy’s Sky Network. He will also continue as producer of CNBC’s Restaurant Startup, launching season two in January.

Guest hosts filling in after Craig Ferguson steps down as host of CBS’s The Late Late Show on Friday, December 19 include Judd Apatow, Will Arnett, Wayne Brady, Drew Carey, Sean Hayes and Kunal Nayyer, among others. CBS daytime is pitching in, too, with original after-dark editions of The Talk airing January 12-16. James Corden takes up permanent residency Monday, March 9.

The BBC needs to cut $630 million more than the $1.73 billion it’s already trimmed from the budget, according to a report released Thursday. BBC managing director, finance and operations Anne Bulford said the aim is to avoid as much as possible cutting back on content: “It’s vital that as much of the license fee as possible goes straight to the programs and services audiences love. This report shows we’ve made great strides in becoming more efficient. We’re doing far more for less.”

Doctor Who fans will have to wait until the sci-fi drama’s Christmas special to find out whether reports that Jenna Coleman will not return next season are true, a BBC spokesman told Radio Times. Special airs on BBC America Christmas day.

Nextstar struck a deal to acquire Las Vegas CBS affiliate KLAS from Landmark Media Enterprises. The $145 million sale, subject to regulatory approval, would expand Nextstar’s reach to 18 percent of U.S. households.

As CES approaches in January, brands, agencies, and sellers are preparing to converge at the massive show to examine the newest innovations in consumer technology hardware, content, tech delivery systems and more. “For storytellers, brands, or anyone communicating a proposition, everything now is a data opportunity,” says StoryTech Managing Partner Lori Schwartz. “For instance, why should content creators care about 3D printing? Here’s why: not only can it impact the operational side of what you do when it comes to product manufacturing, but it can also inform your thinking around partnerships with brands and how it can be part of a bigger story; for instance, if you’re Polaroid, you might think about developing 3D picture frames. Or big fans of Family Guy might want to print out their favorite poses of Peter.” If you’d like to learn more about the CES trends predicted by StoryTech, join their Google+ hangout on December 3rd.

BRANDS AND ADVERTISING

Weight Watchers has veered away from celebrity endorsements for its new ad campaign from Wieden & Kennedy in Portland, OR, which went wide on Sunday. “When you use celebrities and show before-and-after photos, what you’re doing is kind of implying it’s easy,” Lesya Lysyj, presidentof WW in North America, told the NY Times. Spots are scheduled on shows that draw multiple viewers per household, like NBC’s The Voice and AMC’s Walking Dead, to promote conversation about the emotionally charged challenges of losing weight. According to Kantar Media data, Weight Watchers spent $82.7 million on U.S. ads in the first half of 2014, versus $100.3 during the same period last year.

CASTING

Jon Lindstrom (General Hospital) joins the season two cast of HBO’s True Detective, starring Colin Farrell, Vince Vaughn, Rachel McAdams and Taylor Kitsch.
