Link Building: In search engine optimization (SEO), link building is when website owners develop strategies to earn links to their sites from other websites, with the goal of improving their search engine ranking.

TOP NEWS

CNN isn’t new to the digital space. Aside from taking great pains to build up its own brand’s digital media presence, it also helped to launch the short-form video publication Great Big Story last year. Now the network has acquired Beme, a video-sharing app co-founded by Tumblr vet Matt Hackett and YouTube star Casey Neistat. Deal terms weren’t disclosed. With the acquisition, CNN says it will form a new venture — launching next summer – geared toward millennial viewers. Neistat, a filmmaker and reporter with 5.8 million YouTube subs, will take charge of the new venture’s editorial direction and, presumably, serve as its primary on-camera presence. (He’ll serve as Executive Producer.) Beme currently has 11 employees, and they’ll all be joining CNN. The only thing that won’t survive the acquisition is the Beme app itself, which CNN intends to shutter.

DirecTV Now, AT&T‘s much-anticipated OTT-based live TV service, made its debut yesterday. Dish Network‘s Sling TV, arguably DirecTV Now’s biggest competitor in the space, apparently didn’t want to get lost in the conversation. Dish announced that it’s introducing cloud-based DVR functionality to Sling TV, starting with a new beta test. Users won’t be able to record everything, though; Disney‘s distribution agreements with Dish don’t allow its networks, including ABC and ESPN, to be recorded through Sling TV. The new beta program will first be available via Roku devices, starting next month.

The programmatic digital ad space has been growing by leaps and bounds for years, and that’s not likely to change in 2017. According to Zenith‘s new ‘Programmatic Marketing Forecasts‘ report, programmatic advertising is set to grow by 31% next year, more than social media (25%), online video (20%), or any other ad market. The report estimates that programmatic will be the primary method of trading digital display ads by the end of 2016, accounting for 51% of all expenditures. Zenith projects that the number will hit 58% next year.

One reason for the explosive growth of programmatic advertising, according to Zenith exec Benoit Cacheux: "The greater availability of programmatic mobile media." PLATFORMS + DEVICES

The BBC has launched a new video product within its mobile News app. Designed to be viewed vertically in full-screen format, the product features a curated list of "videos of the day." The BBC also says it will incorporate "vertical interstitial ad formats" into the videos. The new features were cooked up by Project Newstream, a mobile-oriented video journalism initiative that the BBC first announced in September of 2015. According to the BCC, over 60 percent of BBC News’s digital traffic now comes from mobile devices.

RESEARCH

According to a report from the data firm Sensor Tower, the biggest app advertiser on Facebook is Instagram. That’s not too surprising, given that Instagram is a Facebook property. Sensor Tower, which monitors app activity on millions of devices, has long found Instagram to be among Facebook’s top 10 app advertisers. But 2016’s Q3 was the first time Instagram jumped into first place. Twitter, meanwhile, is nowhere on the list. That’s because it’s been banned from advertising on Facebook. They are competitors, after all. According to a source who spoke with Advertising Age, Twitter has attempted to run app-install campaigns on Facebook in the past, but has been explicitly denied.

The ListenFirst Television Interest (TVI) Rating (TM) is a standardized measurement of the most buzzed-about TV programs on linear TV and streaming services. A complement to ListenFirst’s other syndicated data products (such as the ListenFirst Digital Audience Rating – TV), the metrics included in the rating capture organic actions that are largely unaffected by paid media. Programs that surface on the TVI leaderboards are the most hashtagged on Facebook, Google+, and Tumblr, as well as most searched for on Wikipedia (used as a proxy for organic search volume).

Source: ListenFirst. The TVI Rating aggregates metrics that measure organically generated activity by fans of the TV show. The metric includes total volume of official hashtag mentions on Facebook, Google+, and Tumblr, along with Wikipedia page views (as a proxy for organic search volume) for a show as a percentage of the total volume of the same activities for all shows. [Note: Data for the past week excludes Tumblr mentions.]

EXECUTIVE MOVES

BuzzFeed is seeing a couple of notable departures. Chief Marketing Officer/Chief Creative Officer Frank Cooper is leaving the company. Cooper joined BuzzFeed from PepsiCo, where he’d served as CMO of Global Consumer Engagement. News of Cooper’s departure comes shortly after NBCU re-upped its investment in BuzzFeed, matching its previous $200 million cash infusion. According to the Wall Street Journal, BuzzFeed missed its 2015 revenue projection by about 20%, but is on track to meet this year’s revenue target. Also leaving the company is McKay Coppins, Senior Political Writer for BuzzFeed News, who announced that he’ll be joining The Atlantic as a staff writer. The two departures don’t appear to be related.

The programmatic advertising platform PulsePoint has named a new exec to head up PulsePoint Health, its recently launched health care division. Chris Neuner will serve as PulsePoint’s SVP and GM of Digital Health Solutions. Neuner has previously held Sales EVP positions at Sharecare and QualityHealth.

The cross-device marketing technology company Tapad has named a new exec. Igor Elbert will oversee the company’s data science team as VP of Data Science. He most recently served as Distinguished Data Scientist for the shopping site Gilt Groupe.
