Black Friday has come and gone, and the numbers speak volumes. According to estimates from Adobe, Friday was the first individual shopping day in U.S. history in which consumers made over $1 billion worth of purchases via phones and tablets. (About $1.2 billion, to be precise.) That’s a 33 percent increase over last year’s Black Friday numbers. And that’s just mobile. Total online Black Friday sales hit $3.34 billion, according to Adobe.

Comcast and Dish Network announced plans to integrate Sling TV, Dish’s OTT-based Live TV service, into the Comcast video platform X1. Over 425 Sling TV platforms will be included.

VIRTUAL + AUGMENTED REALITY

The open source multimedia player VLC has added 360-degree video support to its desktop apps. (Users can download free test versions from the VLC website.) VLC says that mobile support will follow soon. And VLC apps designed specifically for VR headsets like the Google Daydream View and Oculus Rift will likely debut next year. The new 360-degree video functionality comes as a result of a collaboration between the VR camera developer Giroptic and VideoLAN, the non-profit software developer behind VLC.

Last year, Microsoft said it planned to let users stream Xbox One games to the Oculus Rift VR headset. That was around the same time Donald Trump announced he was running for president; it’s been a while. But almost a year and a half later, it looks like the promise is finally coming to fruition. Come December 12, Microsoft says it will launch a free Oculus Store app. The app will let users send Xbox One games to a Rift headset that’s attached to a Windows 10 PC.

OTT + SVOD

Perhaps it’s not surprising that rival streamers should get into spats every now and again. It’s previously been reported that Amazon paid about $160 million for The Grand Tour, its new auto-centric series starring the former cast of Top Gear. That’s a certainly a pretty penny, but Netflix content chief Ted Sarandos recently insisted that the number was closer $250 million. Then, in a recent interview with CNN, The Grand Tour star Jeremy Clarkson pushed back on Sarandos’s claim. "Amazon spent far less than Netflix would have you believe," said Clarkson. Either way that’s a lot of money – but the first episode, which aired November 17, was Amazon’s most-watched premiere.

PLATFORMS + DEVICES

Looks like Google is phasing out Google Cast…Well, its name at least. The tech giant has been quietly rebranding the internet-connected loudspeakers and smart TVs that are compatible with its Chromecast streaming players. Now Google and its partners have begun saying that such products have "Chromecast built-in." Google confirmed the shift to Variety a day after the trade pub spotted it. The company says the new branding will officially begin next year.

The Chinese electronics company LeEco has opened up a pop-up shop at The Grove, a well-known shopping center/farmer’s market in Los Angeles. It’s the company’s first U.S. store, but it won’t be around too long: The shop opened on Friday, and it’ll close its doors on December 27. The store’s featured items will include smartphones, VR headsets, TVs, and even connected bikes. Most of the items will be display-only; consumers will have to go online to actually buy them. LeEco officialy entered the U.S. market in October.

VC FUNDING + INVESTORS

The Middle Kingdom has live video platforms too — and one of them is now flush with cash. Yixia Tech, a company that operates live video streaming operations of the microblogging company Sina Weibo, is set to receive $500 million in a new investment round. $120 million of that will come from Sina Weibo. (Sina Weibo had already invested $190 million in the company.) Other investors include Everbright, Focus Media, and Shanghai Media Group.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Verizon‘s go90 unit has a new Head of Programming. In the new role, Steve Woolf will head up all programming efforts for the go90 mobile video platform. Woolf previously served as Global Head of Networks for the teen- and tween-oriented digital media company AwesomenessTV, overseeing technical operations and business development for the company’s multichannel networks.
