AT&T stood by its plan to let its wireless customers access its DirecTV Now streaming service without incurring data charges in a letter to the FCC. The company said the business model will make wireless broadband more competitive with cable, providing wireless customers with the kind of “mobile video experience they increasingly demand in the most consumer-friendly manner possible,” wrote Robert Quinn Jr., AT&T’s senior EV, external & legislative affairs.

AT&T also reached a deal with Fox Networks Group to extend the Fox nets across AT&T DirecTV products, including its upcoming streaming service. CBS is the last big holdout for the $35/month service.

NBCUniversal Talent Infusion Programs named comedy writers Mnelik Belilgne, Melanie Boysaw and Jeremy Hsu as well as drama writers Lorelei Ignas, Allyssa Lee, Rayna McClendon, Mellori Velasquez and Jeane Wong as its 2016-17 Writers on the Verge. Now in its 11th year, Writers on the Verge is an annual program for aspiring writers of diverse backgrounds who are “on the verge” of breaking out, but need a final polish of their writing and pitch presentation skills to equip them for a career in television. The program has produced successful television execs, among them staffers on The Blacklist, Superstore, American Crime, Suits, Shades of Blue and NBC midseason series The Blacklist Redemption and Midnight, Texas.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Legendary and the Frank Herbert estate reached an agreement granting the production house film and TV motion picture rights to revered sci-fi novel Dune. The agreement calls for the development and production of possible film and television projects for a global audience. The projects would be produced by Thomas Tull, Mary Parent and Cale Boyter, with Brian Herbert, Byron Merritt and Kim Herbert serving as executive producers.

TNT ordered a pilot for Snowpiercer, a futuristic thriller based on the film by Bong Joon Ho. A co-production of Tomorrow Studios and Turner’s Studio T, the hour-long drama pilot is exec-produced by writer/showrunner Josh Friedman (Avatar 4, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles) and Tomorrow Studios’ Marty Adelstein (Aquarius, Prison Break, Teen Wolf) and Becky Clements (Good Behavior, Aquarius, Last Man Standing), and the original film’s Ho, Park Chan-wook, Lee Tae-hun and Dooho Choi, along with CJ Entertainment.

Fox has put in development comedy series Catalina, from Max Winkler and Jake Johnson’s the Walcott Company and 20th Century Fox TV, where Walcott is under an overall deal. Series, written by Winkler, Johnson and Dr. Ken exec producer Mary Fitzgerald, centers on a carefree party-girl bartender who‘s forced to face adulthood after the death of her mother.

CNBC greenlit new original primetime series The Deed, and scheduled its debut for Wednesday, March 1, 2017 at 10p. The series features two savvy multimillionaire real estate moguls – New Orleans-based Sidney Torres and Chicago-based Sean Conlon - who between them have done more than half a billion dollars in property deals. Series will explore a side of real estate that other property shows ignore.

BBC America gave a season 2 greenlight to original scripted series Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency. Starring Elijah Wood and Samuel Barnett, the series is penned by Max Landis (American Ultra, Chronicle) and exec-produced by Robert Cooper (Stargate Atlantis, Stargate Universe). Season 2 will return with 10 episodes and premiere in 2017; season 1 will finish on December 10 at 9p.

Wilshire Studios, the unscripted production arm of NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment, inked a first look deal with producer, TV personality and media entrepreneur Amy Palmer to develop and produce original programming for the studio. Palmer’s first project is Making Madison, a docu-series following pop singer, actress and social media personality Madison Beer and her family. Palmer is the founder/CEO of PowerwomenTV.com, a woman’s lifestyle and career digital network and founder/CEO of Gracie Grey Entertainment Group, a social media and branding agency.

Martha & Snoop’s Potluck Dinner Party is smokin’ hot. VH1 renewed the series, which features Martha Stewart and Snoop Dogg as they host weekly dinner parties with celeb friends putting their personal spin on the dishes, for a second season. The series debuted as cable’s top new unscripted franchise of 2016, scoring 3 million Total Viewers and a 1.5 A18-49 rating in Live+3.

Global production company GRB Entertainment optioned film, television and digital/OTT rights for New York Times best-selling book, Archaeology of the Bible, by Jean-Pierre Isbouts. The National Geographic book examines hundreds of significant archaeological discoveries linked to the biblical narrative in a historical context and from an objective, nondenominational perspective, in addition to discussing what has yet to be located. It’s the second title by Isbouts to be optioned by GRB; his The Story of Christianity was optioned last year.
