IN THE NEWS

Hayma Washington has been elected as Chairman and CEO of the Television Academy, the first African-American in the position. "This is a time of considerable change for our industry and I am deeply committed to ensuring that the Academy is at the forefront as we move towards a more inclusive future," said Washington, who starts a two-year term in January.

Donald Trump‘s surprise election as president will impact storytelling on The Good Fight, the Good Wife spinoff launching on CBS All Access in February. "With Trump and the cultural shifts we’re seeing, we’re really excited — there’s a strong rationale for the show," said co-creator Robert King at the Scripted television conference in NYC last week. As for whether it was clear enough on the Good Wife series finale that Alicia and Jason end up together (they do), King said the show tried to bring Jeffrey Dean Morgan back to shoot an additional scene, but the actor was working in Atlanta on The Walking Dead.

On the subject of Trump, in between tweets about cabinet positions, Broadway smash Hamilton ("highly overrated") and settling the Trump University lawsuit, the president-elect weighed in on Saturday Night Live, which featured the return of Alec Baldwin-as-Trump in the cold open. Opined Trump, "It is a totally one-sided, biased show — nothing funny at all." Emma Stone hosts December 3 with musical guest Shawn Mendes.

Bruno Mars also talked late night on Twitter, in his case to tout an upcoming appearance on CBS‘s The Late Late Show Carpool Karaoke segment. "When an unstoppable force meets and immovable object @j_corden Thanks for the lift," tweeted Mars. The Carpool seat is a hot ticket — Madonna also recently filmed.

Science Channel canceled plans for a Punkin Chunkin special on Sunday, November 26, after a woman was critically injured when a pumpkin launcher malfunctioned. "In light of the unfortunate incident at the Punkin Chunkin event on Nov. 6, Science Channel will not air Punkin Chunkin as originally planned," said Science spokesman Paul Schur. "We are sending our hopes and prayers for a full recovery to the injured woman, her family and loved ones." Sister net Discovery Channel had been scheduled to simulcast the event.

Traditional television viewing has been steadier with older viewers than the young’uns, according to a survey from R2C Group. 60 percent of Baby Boomers reported that over the past year, their linear and pay TV viewing remained the same, while only 43 percent of Millennials could say the same. Both groups noted a boost in SVOD viewing over the past 12 months, with 56 percent of Millennials and 22 percent of boomers saying it was on the rise.

AT&T is holding an invitation-only launch event for its upcoming $35/month streaming service, DirecTV Now (hashtag: #MoreTVFreedom), on November 28 in at NYC’s Venue. So far, networks from Disney/ESPN, HBO, NBCUni, Turner, Discovery, Scripps Networks Interactive, AMC Networks, Starz, Viacom and Univision will be carried.

Masi Oka is leaving Hawaii Five-0 after seven seasons. His character, Max, "had done too much of everything he can do," Oka told EW.

The PPL premiere will be followed at 9p by the series launch of Famous in Love, starring Bella Thorne.

A&E‘s Gangland Undercover starts its 8-episode season 2 run on Thursday, December 8 at 10p. Scripted drama focuses on an informant on a mission to infiltrate three notorious biker gangs.

COMING UP

New York Women in Film and Television‘s 37th annual Muse Awards, recognizing the outstanding vision and achievement of women in the film, television and digital media industries, will take place Thursday, December 8, at the New York Hilton Midtown hotel. This year’s honorees are actresses Mary-Louise Parker (Weeds), Debi Mazar (Younger) and Martha Plimpton (The Real O’Neals), as well as Marcia Smith, co-founder and president of Firelight Media, and Jacki Kelley, COO of Bloomberg Media.

Part 2 of Animal Planet‘s Pet Nation Renovation shows the massive makeover of a shelter in Michigan on Friday, December 2 at 10p. Once-homeless dogs and cats have sponsors Quicken Loans, Ace Hardware and Delta Faucet to thank for over $100,000 worth of state-of-the-art kennels, a meet-and-greet area and a special cat apartment.

ADVERTISERS & AGENCIES

While 81 percent of agencies are satisfied with their team’s ability to earn media on television for clients, nearly two-thirds of brands are frustrated with both their agency and in-house teams when it comes to earning TV coverage, according to a new study from D S Simon Media and Talkwalker. Brands’ insistence on overly commercial messaging, the Brand Video Communications report reported, "is a significant roadblock." Also of note: Agencies were better than brands at using analytics to identify pitch targets, according to the survey of over 200 respondents. "There is a 20-point gap between agencies using data to target outreach," said Talkwalker’s Todd Grossman. "This is significant because it is a sign than in-house teams are failing to capitalize on the opportunities data offers to improve targeting. With so much data and analytics now available, in-house teams need to catch up or be left behind."

Publicis Groupe is merging digital brands SapientNitro and Razorfish, effective January 2. SapientNitro CEO Alan Wexler will lead the SapientRazorfish as CEO, while Razorfish CEO Shannon Denton takes the new position of Chief Strategy Officer for the new company and head of global practices for Publicis.Sapient. Wexler will also be co-CEO of Publicis.Sapient, with Chip Register. "When we formed Publicis.Sapient we integrated the strongest set of capabilities in digital, consulting and technology amongst any of our peer group," said Maurice Levy, CEO, Publicis Groupe. "We are now taking this next, important step to further integrate these formidable assets."
